We're glad you enjoyed out secret project. I regret to inform y'all that this is the final cut, however. I stretched the limits of my skills as a choreographer and editor to bring you this masterpiece. That and budget overruns. ;-)
After all, this isn't an episode of Glee. Musical numbers don't happen spontaneously.
But yes, this was a typical day at the office. Now Tuesdays, that's when things would get exciting..... -
Some of you have been wondering what we've been up to for the past month, well now you'll learn to never ask such questions.....

Thanks go to Sean "Dr. Bat-Aeon" McCann, Matt "Positron" Miller, Tim "Black Scorpion" Sweeney, Andy "No Redname" Maurer, John "Protean" Hegner, Jeff "Arbiter Hawk" Hamilton, Eric "Clockwork01" Johnsen and Positot.
But not Keetsie "Tunnel Rat" Some Really Long Name because she wussed out. -
-
Out of my entire squadron of 12+ people, the ONLY psi I had was my Heavy, aka Matt Miller. Bleh.

Peter could be adopting a new secret identity. He'd still be Spider-Man, but not as Peter Parker.

The traditional 4-color comic super-hero is a bit of a niche concept compared to fantasy. It has strong appeal in America, and less so abroad. That's certainly one of the challenges, but also one of the strengths that City of Heroes has.
I think what films such as Avengers and X-Men have shown is that with the right twist, those same characters can have huge international appeal. -
Quote:Same. This was my first MMO, and when I played other MMO's and found out that they didn't have sidekicking or a lfg tool....it just went downhill from there. There is no other game on the market that handles teaming as well as this one does. Whether it be just you and a friend or a whole team the auto-sidekick system is awesome! And the fact that any eight players can for an effective team regardless of their builds is good too. In the old day there was no team more powerful than eight Controllers in the high 20’s.
Pick up groups are also huge fun. Not just for the above reasons but because 95% of the time they really worked out well. I stayed up much later than I planned more often than I care to admit just because I got on a team that was blowing through levels like Kleenex!
This is the first MMO that I ever played and every game from now on will be measured against it.
Add to the fact that the "Holy Trinity" didn't really exist?
It's great being able to play a game with anyone you want. -
I can't name just one dev.
They all rock, even the ones who were my arch enemies, like Arbiter Curry or Castle or Doctor Aeon or Black Scorpion or the Television or...(Wow, I had a lot of arch enemies...) -

Quote:The Khalisti Wharf content would be Cimerora taken to the next level and then some. From what I'd seen, it was some of the most compelling alignment content ever. The Cimerora contacts already do this. Their arcs kind of suck, but they are unique for each faction.
-
It wasn't a PVP zone, but it was co-op. It would be different from existing co-op zones in that Heroes and Villains would have their own unique mission content. Heroes would do Heroic things while Villains would do Villainous things. Heroes and Villains would have their own themed neighborhoods.

Quote:One of the more radical ideas was to let players pick 2 primary AND secondary powers at Level 1. This would have given characters more attacks at lower levels, which could have helped certain AT's.Like Hide in the stalker secondary, blaster and tanks first secondary (defiance 2.0 shoot through mez and Bruising). But actually those two were simple to "fix" (make Hide an inherent, and leave the first powers special). Then you would have needed a way to prevent the game from letting the player choose 2 primary or 2 secondary as first powers, and from these two situations, only the one where the player had no offensive power was bad.
We were all pretty disappointed to find out that it wasn't "just that easy." The dev team probably spent almost 6 months trying to make this work.
That's one of the reasons the Origin Powers were buffed in I24. It was an attempt to balance out low level game play. -
Quote:The dev team did look into that. It would have resulted in fundamental game-breaking issues, unfortunately. Not as in game imbalance. I mean as in it would cause things to explode break-wise, as the game makes fundamental assumptions on how powers are assigned.I'd have preferred more flexibility for our existing ATs.
Lets see
Being able to choose the T1 or T2 for your secondary ability
You saw that in more of the newer Power Sets. Since the flexibility of choices wasn't something that could be easily granted, the idea was to make the choices as compelling as possible. -
Quote:I can't for a couple reasons.I <bleep>ing love the CoH economy.
No other game has such a level of control. And such a level of Ebil.
Release the top richest players list!
1) I don't have access to that data anymore, or the tool to generate that data.
2) There are probably privacy issues involved that would cause really puppies to weep and hamsters to explode if such a thing happened.
I do know I wasn't on that list! -
The Striker AT, from my recollection, was the melee support AT that Synapse/Phil wanted to make for a while. You can think of it as the next step in making something like EAT's, but with newer tech.
The Striker was meant to have burst melee and range dps, and the ability to survive high damage for a short amount of time.
The Striker could start out ranged, and start building up a melee damage buff. Once the buff is maximized, the Striker would then pop into melee range and then begin building up a ranged buff. Take a few alpha strikes, pop out and begin again. There would also be some CC abilities as well in case a breather was needed.
Oh, and one of the melee Power Sets for Strikers would have been a variation of Dark Melee, but.....with a shadow scythe. -
Quote:There were many reasons, depending on the item.I have a question: why the heck were so many things in the Paragon Market untradable?
1) Reducing RMT. Allowing for a direct conversion between $$ and in-game currency makes it easier for gold sellers. COH didn't have the RMT issues a lot of other games did, and that made monitoring abuse much more simplified. This could potentially have made that work far more complicated.
2) Exclusivity. There were certain items we wanted to have available in the store only. We want you to feel that the store items had value.
3) Technology. There were many more items where for a variety of reasons, we couldn't implement the technology to allow for trades. Super Packs being one of them. But hey, guess what we were working on for Issue 24.....(I mean I DID raise the question at the last Pummit, if anyone was paying attention to the Paragon Market panel. It wasn't a rhetorical question....)

Quote:The in-game economy was a monster. That's more of a question for the dev team, but from my recollection, it was a pretty herculean task to try and fix the inflation. It couldn't be done in one shot. Several attempts were made, which is one of the reasons why there was a high INF cost to various Incarnate unlocks. But it would have required much more extensive analysis and work to implement permanent, meaningful changes. If I recall, part of your work involved monitoring the City of Heroes game world economy. Can you tell us a little about Paragon's role in measuring and trying to correct for inflation? Were there reports on who the richest players were? And was there any research into player behaviors vis a vis the market? Did you have anything like the Big Mac index for keeping an eye on salvage prices?
I'd love to know more about Paragon's understanding of Wentworth's.
We did know who the richest players were. There was some research done into market behavior, but the tools to allow for the really cool analysis were built into issue 24.
And no index that we kept track of on a regular basis. -
I'll be wearing a Freem shirt today.

GM Lloyd is fantastic. He's part of The NCsoft Customer Service team, but we always felt like he was also a part of the Paragon dev team. Part of what makes him so great at his job is the fact that he is a long-time player as well.
Fortunately, GM Lloyd will still be with you guys until the lights go off and then some. -
Quote:Apparently I'm grabbing lunch at Oklahoma Joe's. Does that count as barbecue?A heads up on that Sheridan's location. It is more of a walk-up spot. Not a lot of seating space that I recall. Looks like it will be nice weather tomorrow though.
If you bring a lawn chair you could treat it like a tailgate party - something else we do well in KC. I assume you will be enjoying some barbecue while you are in town.
And boy, the airport is super quiet and nice. I could even keep my car in idle at the terminal.
