Some part of me, deep down hopes that when Nov. 30 gets here, they'll feel so bad they won't *actually* pull the plug on us. Still cannot believe they are going to actually do this; kill these characters we have labored for years over.
Maybe MMO gaming will change somehow in the future as a result of this, so that people will never completely lose access to their avatar "children" again. One can hope and dream, anyways.
'Cause this **** really ain't cool. At all. In fact its very upsetting. -
Quote:That's a pretty sorry attempt at an ad hominem: that the best you got?So does that mean you and a few others are NCSoft sleeper agents whose goal is to discredit the anti-NCSoft player base by posting like stark raving lunatics?
Don't bother answering. You wouldn't admit it if you were.
As far as lunacy, I'd go far to beat some of the crap we have seen here as NCSoft apologia, but never let that get in the way of a good flame, right? Right. -
Quote:Some people need repetition, since politeness and reasonable talk only gets us more "NCSoft has the right to do anything they want to do to you, stop being so mean to them, you meanies!!!" and this has been going on for over a month now.for somebody not caring about these things you sure took your time to address them one by one.
The only thing that makes sense to me is that we have a few NCSoft employees attempting mad damage control - but regardless if that is true or not, all these naysayings are having the opposite of the desired effect: NCSoft looks WORSE than ever.
You know what they say about Humpty Dumpty, that wall and all the king's horses and men.... etc. NCSoft took a great fall off the Trust Wall back in August. The fallout will continue to belong solely to them. -
One more time:
1. I don't care that some of you think that all corporations have the right to do literally anything they want with thier product.
2. I dont care that some of you think that corporations have the right to do anything they want to, at any time that suits them, to their paying customers.
3. I dont care that some of you think that closing a customer venue down that was still making money, is a brilliant thing for a company to do.
4. I dont care that some of you think that any decision made by a business entity is being made by people far smarter than you, or me or anyone and that businesses are incapable of making mistakes because so many brilliant minds go into making that decision. [We had someone going on AT LENGTH in this vein tonight on the Virtue Help channel; was quite amusing. Businesses never make mistakes?! BWAHAHAHAHA]
5. I dont care that some of you think anyone disagreeing with you is a whiny crybaby.
6. I dont really care about your convoluted "logic"/apologia.
7. I dont care that some of you think that the CoX IP is "worth whatever value they say it is, even if they lock it in a closet and throw away the key for ten years." Really? 'cause last time I checked, your bank saying a house is worth $500,000 when its really worth $100,000 or less, did not turn out well for either the American consumer OR the bank holding the loan.... hello, property depreciates not appreciates, unless considering a category like gold and a few others. Especially unused property.
I dont care about any of this, and several other arguments I could list. This closure was poorly conceived, poorly executed, its a PR nightmare for NCSoft that they will have a hard time justifying to their stockholders - and I hear NCSoft's stock is tanking right about now.
Good. That last, I DO care about. -
Quote:So, because we have all suffered horrible, unrecoverable losses in real life, NCSoft yanking the rug out from under us ought to be ok, and we shouldn't mind?Basicaly you are saying:"for me the things that have ACTUAL MONETARY VALUE are those related to my entertainment (BTW entertainment is a part of life too and not a lesser one nor it is an optional for those that want to remain sane) and evil NCsoft is taking them away from me. Well I will tell you this : in my life I had worse loss than a videogame and these I will never recover. So I will enjoy the next videogame (even it would be only for a week) and the next one after that. In fact I am curious about Sword and Soul. Maybe at the end I will not play it but it will be because I will not like the game enough not because "it is by an evil publisher"
Truly, some of us are from mars, others from venus or some suitable analogy of your choice. If you dont want to get bent out of shape at losing access to the game, that is your right. That does NOT invalidate the opinions of others, to whom it is a big deal indeed, causing future severe lack of trust in any given publisher.
I'm not happy. I won't be trusting any MMO "house" for a very long time to come, and if that upsets anyone I am sorry - but that is my business. I am the one paying for my games, and investing my time and my cash .... and my love for my various alts. -
Quote:Non sequiter. Participating in real life is not optional, unless one suicides.everything can be yanked out from under you tomorrow :your work, your family even your own life. Are you reluctant to invest time and cash in them too?
My entertainment: optional.
And since life itself involves tolerating intense, high-stress risk, I am LESS LIKELY to be wanting to endure that in my entertainment, too.
NCsoft is taking things from me, that I consider to have ACTUAL MONETARY VALUE. I spent thousands of hours of time, and hundreds of real-world dollars, on my alts. NCSoft is taking all that away from me - and from us - without so much as a sincere by-your-leave. "yeah, we love you guys, and you mean a lot to us!" *YANKS RUG OUT FROM UNDER US*
You bet your bottom dollar I will think once, twice and then thrice before I give them or any MMO publisher the opportunity to do it again. -
Quote:This is true, but being about to endure one horrid stroke of that sword makes me far, far less inclined to want to endure another one in the [potential] near future.Every source of dependency that lies beyond one's control is a sword of Damocles hanging over one's entertainment.
Having watched the Broadcast chat in CO, it seems even by player admission it is obvious that this game is almost completely stagnant, which makes me wonder A LOT about its long-term viability.
I am sure we will never know, but it would be interesting to know how much of a chilling effect CoX's closure will have on its players who move on to other venues, especially those who were only playing the one game [CoX]. It has made me really, really reluctant to invest time and especially, CASH in something that can get yanked out from under me tomorrow - which I would think would be a bad idea indeed for MMOs running real-world cash shops. How many are feeling a similar reluctance?
We will never know. -
... ^^^ That's exactly the thing that makes me very, very wary about investing too much interest in CO: it could literally go at any moment. And with my luck, it would.
Hurry up, Plan Z. Please. -
I swear to God, some of you are going to combust out of sheer frustration the day these forums go down, because it'll mean that you'll be forced to quit trying to hammer your opinions down our throats.
We got it 100 posts ago: you think corporations are people too, and asking them to behave nicely is the equivalent of angry Revolutionaries storming the Bastille. No one CARES that you think it, it'd just be nice to see less dogmatism.
Quote:...Let me guess: you're a corporate lawyer. If you're not, you should become one pronto. And, LOL!I do not think any corporation should be forced to do anything they dont wish to do with something they actually own and or created -
Quote:Obstinate.Do people suppose it is SAVECOH's method that isn't working or if it was NCSOFT being too obstinate?
The players did all they could, and this was beyond totally dismissed - wait, maybe not even that because to dismiss something you have to take it seriously, and I dont believe NCSoft ever took us players seriously for even one second.
This is ok though: I have learned a painful lesson. I will never ever take the owners of any given MMO as an honest entity, ever again - but ESPECIALLY, I will never ever give NCSoft one quintillionth of an ounce of trust ever again. They have blown my trust right out of the water.
It might even have killed my interest in MMO gaming, period. I really dont feel like going through this again in the future. Because now, I trust no MMO corporate entity.
Well, I had been toying with the idea of "Aliens: Colonial Marines" and maybe I'll go do that, because even if they kill the MMO part of that, at least the publisher cant come rip it off of my PC: I could still play if that part stopped [at least from what I understand]. I'm surprised NCSoft isnt demanding we all uninstall the game, and send them all of our boxed versions bacK! After all, do they not "own" those boxes? *sneer*
NCSoft has pretty much killed my interest in GW2. -
Quote:So..... BoA and Netflix pulling anti-customer stunts DID NOT result in huge outrage and the loss of a lot of cash for them? Good to know; I will now officially discard the 1000 news articles that say otherwise. As I recall, both companies did a lot of backpedaling, and they did it PDQ. All over that useless customer backlash, imagine!Woohoo! I'm number 2! I try harder!
Enjoy your delusion. BofA and Netflix have tens of millions of accounts. The sheer number of people involved made for a great deal of noise.
Your 'firestorm' is going to come from a handful of individuals, all of whom are going to look like stereotypical Internet rage-nerds when the world finds out that you're protesting the closure of a video game. Go ahead and explain to the man-on-the-street how this was a 'bad' thing that 'hurt people.' I'll enjoy watching that.
It's a good thing you have no compunction about looking like a fool. Sounds like you'll be getting a good deal of practice.
Neither myself or anyone else said a thing about "taking this to the streets," do not be ridiculous. I also find it amazing that you and others evidently think that no one was made unhappy by this shutdown. I guess in Emotionally- Neutralville, all emotion looks like insanity. I can only wonder what you thought during the Save CoH demonstrations in Atlas; yes, how dare anyone stand up to a corporation. Those fools. Those delusional idiots.
If backlash is so meaningless, do tell why NCSoft is banning accounts over it. This should be good.
I consider an argument to be over when the other half trots out the ad-hominem insults; its like a non-Hitler version of Godwin's Law. You take today's prize, 'ave a nice day. -
Quote:Dear NCSoft Apologist #1 [Brillig is #2, btw]:Why is the whole point seem to be to bad mouth NCSoft? I thought the point was to try to convince them of something. Bad mouthing anyone or anything usually dont convince them to do anything but to dig in and stay the course. If a person was astore owner and they said that they are closing a store in an area and I want to convince them to stay open, I doubt bad mouthing them all over the town and throwing bricks through their window will all of a sudden make them think "Oh gee, they ARE a wonderful community. I think I will stay." No, they probably will try to close down and get out of dodge as fast as possible with as little words as possible. Gangster mafia tactics usually dont work these days in the corporate, unless you are the actual Mafia and have the power to actually back up the words and sometimes that is not guranteed success.
Hi there. Excuse my breaking into your pro-NC soliloquy, but you ain't seen nothing yet. People are just now getting ramped up; some of us are waiting to see if your besties at NC actually pull the plug on 11/30.
If they do - and they almost certainly will - what has went before will seem as nothing compared to the firestorm of sheer and utter hatred which will be unleashed upon their guilty little heads. Facebook. Twitter. Social media of all kinds. Its a gen-u-ine PR Nightmare, part 2. aND IF ITS all so very useless, 'scuse the caps, why do you even care. We're bound to fail, right?
You cannot stop it. Your opinion will mean nothing. Sorry, darlin'. You cannot save them.
Oh, we DO have the power to affect their bottom line. Believe it. This isn't like a negative review on Angie's List or something: this is people all over the world, united in outrage and making sure everyone knows who not to do business with.
When you do something bad, when you hurt people, word tends to get around. True for each one of us. True for corporations. Just ask Bank of America and Netflix, 'kay?
Have a nice day. -
Quote:Especially in today's climate, declining people wanting to throw cash at you is just plain damned stupid. Why is it people assume stupidity or malice when the opposite is the most reasonable conclusion
I could have understood "we're not interested in developing CoX anymore, so here's what we'll do: we're consolidating down to five [or however many] servers, and all new development will cease. However we're still allowing those interested to continue playing a game they love."
What we're getting is the equivalent of the Joker setting fire to a pile of gasoline-soaked cash, just because they want to watch an MMO world burn.
I think - and hope - MMO gamers everywhere are watching this situation and realizing that us today, them tomorrow. And I would not bet even five dollars on Aion or Lineage 2 being open a year down the road. Slash and burn, baby. Slash and burn.
I call that "malice." -
Quote:And there's the money-shot.
If any of NCsoft's personal titles show that they can stand on their own. Then NCsoft will shutdown Guild Wars 2 and Wildstar.
Time was, I would have said that corporations, not unlike people usually make decisions in their own best interest. But in this instance, I no longer say that.
GW2 is making money. And so was CoX, but they killed that anyways. So IMO there's no promise they won't kill GW2 later on, after the new-shiny wears off. If it is making money who cares, we don't need no stinking filthy lucre. Its all about principle now, cash be damned.
Strikes me as literally crazy. I do not have confidence that NCSoft has the financial "wisdom" to function as a long-term entity; and to quote our most recent naysayer, I will have no problem sitting back and watching them burn for it when they finally chase off one playerbase too many.
I can tell you that if I were playing Aion right now, I would be very very afraid. -
Quote:Yeah, I think we have that much down pat, after 50,000 repetitions by you in every thread.
Contrary Mary: You can call it what you want to call it. You like saveCOH movement that is fine. That is your view. I dont care for it too much, and the methods are questionable, that is my view.
Quote:I guess you miss the part where I said I checked them out BEFORE deciding I wanted nothing to do with them? And also the part that this RL person wont stop talking about it. He believes in it, I just so happen dont.
Quote:I'm not sure about you but I dont only be friends with people that agree with everything I say and think and try to make an enemy of everyone that doesnt share my view.
Quote:I cant change your mind of what you probably already decided, but even if you ran that site, there would be nothing of me to kick.
Quote:If you dont want people telling me about what goes on over therem maybe make it an invite only forum. If I chose to, I dont even have to log on to see what is going on but really I dont and dont care at this point as much as they dont care or even worry about me.
Quote:You talk about fangirling, yet, you diss NCSoft while still using their property. If NCSOft disgusts that much, as you told me earlier, why not just leave because no one is holding a gun to your head. Now run and go tell that to your TItan cronies. -
Quote:You certainly seem to have an issue with it, if you're just sitting around waiting to be able to "watch it burn."well too bad you didnt notice that this post came first. Secondly if it's an illegal one, yeah I'll happily watch it burn.
Third who ever said it was an issue for me? I just simply stated that some people, as they stated, did not have good experience with emulators.
Anyways, if ya looking to start trouble, for no reason, I'm not going for it today. nice try though. Have a good day. But when you do try to start trouble at least get the facts straight like the burn comment came afterwards. And try to not make it so obvious next time. Well enough entertaining you, but thought I at least set the facts straight first. The least I could could, you know, staying classy.
Talk like you have been talking around here and expect the fallout, you have been doing nothing but posting negative stuff since all this started. In fact you have been all but reveling in CoX's downfall and been all "WHOOO NCSoft, I loves me some NCSoft and what they're doing!" As I said in the other thread, I hope Titan Network discovers your identity there and bans your access. -
Quote:With any luck Titan network will discover your identity over there and ban you. You have repeately stated that you are hostile to both a server emulator AND find the idea of Plan Z lol-tastic, therefore why should you be privy to any information dealing with either issue?yep there is plan Z in the discussions but on the other hand some are talking about going the emulator way. I remember one guy over there that I Burnt the Toast has a similar name to, named Burnt Toast, is part of these talks about emulators, illegal ones included. Some went as far as saying they will copy exactly the stuff and just shuffle the servers around to prevent shut down. Some say that they are going to set up where techically copying and emulating IP is not illegal, yet still wrong as it's stealing someone else stuff IMO. Others that are part of this talk are Olantern, Sin_Stalker, TinFoil and so on. SOme are for an emulator even an illegal one, and some are against. Some say stick with plan Z some say go emulator. All on TitanNetwork forum. What? Think I didnt want anything to do with them before checking them out? Not to mention a friend over there wont leave me alone about those dang efforts and how it would be good to join them. Right, I probably go over there and say nothing but hi, and someone will start some crap talking about trolling. No thanks, but unfortunately thanks to someone in RL that wont be quiet about it I have more of an idea of what is going on over there than I wish to.
Not to mention your continued fangirling over NCSoft. You're a hostile entity and have no business over there. If I ran that site you'd be off it in the beat of a kitty- cat heart - which is of course at least twice as fast as a human heartbeat. -
Quote:So, stay off the CoX emulator. Its not like someone is holding a gun to your head, forcing you to log on.some people had some bad experiences with those types of servers. I doubt all of them are hack central ad doubt all of them are hack free.
Why would that be an issue for you, anyways? I thought per your earlier post that you were going to hang back and "enjoy watching it burn" or words to that effect.
Stay classy, y'hear? -
.....So now TonyV and co are Pied Pipers, leading us all astray into "something harmful"? An attempt to emulate or even create a new game might be "terribly destructive"? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
Like we're all three years old or something. And like NCSoft didn't just Terribly, Destructively kill CoX dead. There is some real destruction for you.
Those of you who want to move on, seeing all this as unimportant should do just that - move on. -
-
Quote:This is in fact because.... Save COH is right, and NCSoft are killjoy epitomes of wrongheaded, stunt-backfiring passive aggressive wrongity-wrong-wrongness.
It's like the author already chosen sides as the Save COH side is right and NCSoft is wrong
Those of you who fear an emulator, fine - stay off of one. If you want to be hired by NCSoft's legal department as Emulator Attack Dogs, put in your application. People are going to do what they want, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. No one is asking for permission.
A fact I imagine NCSoft is about to discover in spades. Few care what they think. Why would we? Why would I? they are taking property that, irrespective of legalities I consider to be mine - my alts, that I raised from nothing and nurtured and loved and spent money on, FOR YEARS.
If I can get them back, get out of my way because I am doing it - and be damned to your talk of legalese.
NC is trying desperately to limit fallout by keeping mum and hoping this will all go away. Good luck. The ramifications of this little stunt of theirs will be shockwaving through their business-model for a considerable time - and I think those shockwaves are really only beginning to form. My prediction is that the GW2 honeymoon will be over in less than a year, then it wil enter a slow decline. I don't think Boobs and Soul will do well in the west. I just have a funny feeling.
Meanwhile gamers will be remembering NC's slash-and-burn policies about all this for a long time. -
Quote:These forums have mellowed somewhat, but I well remember the days when saying the wrong thing would get one torn to shreds. My observation of the forums from 2005 through 2011 is what kept me from posting.... It doesn't bother me if people are "rude" to me on a forum, but to say that new posters are always met with open arms here is a flat out lie...I have seen "noobs" torn to shreds for asking so-called "dumb" questions...not just here, but on every MMO forum I have participated in.
I remember one time when I dared to post the observation that EB Citadel had the ability to hit through Phase Shift. Oh dear.... the flap that generated! Unfortunately the flap did nothing to mitigate the observed fact that every now and then, [especially] "name"-EBs have to ability to hit right through Phase.
I respec'ed out ofPhase shortly afterward, due to its hit-or-miss nature, but still.
Then there were the several huuuuuuuuuuge flamewars over the merits or lack thereof, of kinetics people slamming everyone they saw, every where they were, with SB. Doin' a respec? *BAM!* At the Black Market? *WHAM!* Sorting out enhancements? *SHAZAAM!* Waiting for everyone to zone so we can start the TF? *WHAM! *BAM!* *SLAM! *ALA-KAZAAM!* It simply never stopped.
Not everyone liked that, and kins were very entitled as to their right to do this and they were hella snarky about it. Luckily this is no longer an issue, but just sayin' - this community has its share of unpleasantness, its hardly a band of angels and I dont kid myself that it is. -
-
Its not about punishing employees of various development studios: its about a lack of player willingness to commit to spending years creating and honing characters in an MMO owned by NCSoft - and indeed, the entire MMO industry - only to have the rug pulled out from under us again.
I have GW2. I have one character in it, currently a level FOUR. WhooO! Lev el 4. I cannot muster the enthusiam to really get into that game, because at the back of my mind I know as soon as I get fully engaged, NCSoft might decide to pull this s*** AGAIN. In fact I rarely log into that game, because the whole time I am there I am thinking about NCSoft and what they are doing to CoX. It ruins my enjoyment. My trust in them is basically destroyed.
I am afraid to become fully engaged with CO, thats an old game and they could pull the plug any time. Any ol' time. Bang. Goodbye.
I think the entire MMO industry needs to sit down and think about what they're doing. Because what they are doing with this "SHAZAAM!, KISS YOUR GAME GOODBYE FOR NO GOOD REASON, HAHAHAHA!" is.... turning off the very customers you should be wanting to court. People who do not trust you have little incentive to spend money on your products; these companies are killing the geese who lay their monetary golden eggs.
It seems many if not most businesses are run in a similarly bloodthirsty fashion, which perhaps is a small part of why the global economy is in the shape its in right now; but I digress. Frankly if I were someone working in the gaming industry, I'd trust no employer. -
...which leads us right back to: "Money..... we like money, but not money generated by that particular game. I know! Let's permanently anger a large portion of those people GIVING us that money, with a no-warning, scorched-earth permanent shutdown! That'll teach them to give us money we don't want!"
In what universe do companies NOT like money... I. Can't. Even.
