Quote:Greed and ambition as a part of selfishness is a natural way of individuals to assure their preferencial survival and their genes passing to a next generation.I suppose that boils down to actually getting power to these other places. More often than not, whenever 'more advanced' nations try to help the less fortunate ones, the poodoo always finds a way to hit the fan. And then there are groups people who are perfectly happy without electricity, even though it is well within their means to acquire it if they wished.
If I was going to try and define greed mathematically, my first thought would be to use scalable percentage relative to whatever the accepted poverty line is.
I've been at that line before, and internet/gaming was the only pleasantry I partook in during that time. But that resulted in me being unable to accumulate money. It was always 'just enough to get by' at best. My ideal living conditions? All I really wanted to be different, is to not be afraid of breaking a leg and being unable to get it fixed, or worrying whether or not the heater was going to fail. If I were rich, there's very little I would want to change, except for maybe a vacation. The rest of that money would either be given back, or maybe into entertainment for the masses (preferably the ones who are currently being ignored). I have little need for material things.
On the other end of the spectrum, like what you were saying about millionaires not thinking they're rich, you have people who were made an example of during the election. Those who were fighting against a higher tax for the rich, and citing things like only having a few 100k leftover per year after dealing with all the necessities. And they treat it like it's hard living. That's pretty extreme. To me, the boundary between rich and not isn't whether you have a shiny car in your driveway or can go to Tahiti for a month every year. It's whether or not you have to be afraid of what tomorrow brings, and whether or not it's actually catastrophic. If you don't have to worry about what happens if your car gets wrecked, or you get sick, etc, you don't tense up when the utility bills come in the mail, that's wealthy.
But that kind of greed is at least easier to grasp. People who eat caviar when there are kids who can't afford rice, have a much bigger buffer between their actions and the suffering. That is a lot easier to believe than when someone fires a whole town, pays farms to not grow food for the purpose of driving up prices (and causing famine in the process), lobbies for regulations to make it impossible for small businesses (and potential new competitors) to survive, etc. We're getting off on a pretty stray tangent now though. The kind of trouble I was discussing before, isn't about just hurting one group of people or another. It's something that will come back to bite EVERYONE in the **** eventually, the super-rich included. I'm sure it's possible to enjoy oneself while still achieving some sort of equilibrium with what nature can provide. Or at the very least, extend our livability on Earth past the point where we can expand outward into the galaxy. But that's probably me being overly optimistic. The sad truth may be that faster-than-light travel is not possible, and Earth is all we will ever have. If we are indeed trapped here by the laws of physics, we will drastically need to alter our perceptions or one of two things will happen. We will either be catapulted back to the stone-age, or will face mass extinction.
Without greed most inventions we enjoy wouldn't be here or at most in a really primitive state.
Social class resentment is used by politician as a tool to move people the way they want.
About poverty line, I would say that when the person does not know if they can eat the next day, and a place to protect them from the weather conditions.
Being worry is pretty much about a choice, cubans has "free" medical attention, they don't have to worry about the car they don't have and they get their monthly rations, so not worries they must be rich people.
What society should try to do is to give a fair chance to everybody to seek their happiness. That might imply some help, but also a lot of responsability that politicians tend to forget in the name of their demagogy.
If NCSoft wants to sit on CoH is their right, people bought a client that they are allow to run, just that the servers after Nov 31th will be on permanent maintenance. -
Quote:Sometimes I wonder, if by making so much campaign for the game, the Save CoH movement just make NCSoft to have high expectations of the value of the IP. If a lot of people keep saying that the game is awesome and it has potential and other stuff, it is expected that the owner would ask more money for it.I don't know what's left to do. NCSoft has made their decision quite clear by demanding way more money than the IP is worth (when they bother to reply to investors at all). I sent my plea to NCSoft's CoHSunset e-mail address, and never got a response, so I suspect that was tossed into the circular file.
I don't have any video game inside connections. I can't put any pressure on anyone, NC Soft or otherwise. I don't have any media connections to make NC Soft look bad. I can just follow what others who do have those connections do, and even they're doing less and less.
The devs moving on is what really clinches it for me. Even if NCSoft changed their mind and let another company buy the game today, Paragon Studios has scattered to the four winds. There's nobody left to develop it.
I'm extremely sad about finally finding a game that was perfect for me only to have it killed while still actively developing, and I don't know where I'm going to go from here.
I haven't exactly "given up", I'm still hoping that somehow the efforts being put forth turn someone's head, but I'm no longer hopeful that NCSoft can be made to care or is even paying attention anymore.
.... and yet, as I type that, and edit that, and reword that.... it makes me angry all over again that they should be allowed to get away with this. I still have NCSoft's CEO's e-mail address. Maybe I'll try re-sending my CoHSunset e-mail to him.
Imho CO and DCUO are pretty enjoyable. I play mainly CO, but from time to time I take some time playing DCUO and it has pretty cool stuff too. For those planning trying those games, I would recommend dropping the "it's not CoH" line of thinking. It would likely prevent appreciating the good things of each game. -
QFT, I hope they put more juice into the their development to push more content and other stuff. Their current path since to be on vehicle system development, kind of a work in progress, first 3 types. Now they are giving limited customization in terms of vehicle powers. Hopefully, next week the new alert will say what they have been working on.

Quote:discussions are not about being popular, they are about uncovering truths. I was pointing out that if he already closed his mind to any adverse argument why is he discussing?I love how people like you seem to think you aren't being an annoying git by nitpicking a comment addressing how CLEARLY unprofessional NCsoft has been.
You're only pissing people off.
If what you want is to vent frustration by criticizing NCSoft, be my guest. -
Quote:for somebody not caring about these things you sure took your time to address them one by one.One more time:
1. I don't care that some of you think that all corporations have the right to do literally anything they want with thier product.
2. I dont care that some of you think that corporations have the right to do anything they want to, at any time that suits them, to their paying customers.
3. I dont care that some of you think that closing a customer venue down that was still making money, is a brilliant thing for a company to do.
4. I dont care that some of you think that any decision made by a business entity is being made by people far smarter than you, or me or anyone and that businesses are incapable of making mistakes because so many brilliant minds go into making that decision. [We had someone going on AT LENGTH in this vein tonight on the Virtue Help channel; was quite amusing. Businesses never make mistakes?! BWAHAHAHAHA]
5. I dont care that some of you think anyone disagreeing with you is a whiny crybaby.
6. I dont really care about your convoluted "logic"/apologia.
7. I dont care that some of you think that the CoX IP is "worth whatever value they say it is, even if they lock it in a closet and throw away the key for ten years." Really? 'cause last time I checked, your bank saying a house is worth $500,000 when its really worth $100,000 or less, did not turn out well for either the American consumer OR the bank holding the loan.... hello, property depreciates not appreciates, unless considering a category like gold and a few others. Especially unused property.
I dont care about any of this, and several other arguments I could list. This closure was poorly conceived, poorly executed, its a PR nightmare for NCSoft that they will have a hard time justifying to their stockholders - and I hear NCSoft's stock is tanking right about now.
Good. That last, I DO care about.
Anyway, my condolences. -
Quote:Fair enough. I have not noticed the animation issues, but I might not have looked carefully enough. I kind of like most of the travel power animations, the beast running is pretty good, but the transition between it and normal stance is not as smooth as it should be.Whilst I agree that on some levels the CO character to creator is superior to COHs, for me that isn't COs biggest problem. The problem comes when the game engine makes that character move. The animations are TERRIBLE. Running seems to be missing a few frames (especially on the heavy and beast models). If you're flying and firing from your hands, your upper and lower torso appear to belong to different people. (the top half moves and twists with your hand thrusts, but your legs and waist stay perfectly rigid)
Quote:The other problem is the difficulty. In CoH, the difficulty of the mobs as you progress is fairly flat, which generally means you have to increase their relative levels or numbers to present yourself with more of a challenge. As there is that visible increase in difficulty or numbers, you have a visual and quantitative representation of your increase in strength, which is much more rewarding from a player perspective.
In CO, irrespective of level you always get that "Rule of 4" which provides more or less the same level of challenge right from 1 - 40. That makes the game feel a little repetitive and dull (or it did to me).
Quote:The other turn off from my point of view with CO is the general setting. It all feels so tacky. It's almost like it's poking fun at itself with much of the content. Don't get me wrong, I do love little humourous touches and pop culture references in a game, but if you're not careful, you end up coming across like you're trying too hard. (Just get rid of Foxbat OK CO devs?)
CoH's atmosphere and general feel is spot on. It feels like a real place, with real people. You might say that CoH is a Paragon. CO is a Parody.
If you check Vibora Bay, the atmosphere is definitely darker and more serious despite still having some cult references. -
For many the main issue is that they have been playing CoH for so long time that anything that goes far from it will feel ackward.
CO is a faster paced version of CoH combat with short or none cooldowns and light control powers. DCUO is even faster allowing weapon combos moves.
Another aspect is that CoH, except for incarnitate content, is pretty easy especially on IOs. CO tends to be a bit more challenging and DCUO goes even further.
CO customization is on par or superior to CoH, especially at core characteristic levels. For instance, I have seen people complaining that CO has only one face which is pretty much shows that they didn't even try the face sliders which gives thousand options. Would it be great having more premade faces? sure, but it is not related to the potentiality of the character creator. There are features in CoH that CO does not have, but the main disadvantage is in the number of costume pieces which is basically a matter of time.
DCUO has definitely less customization options than CoH or CO, but fitting into the DC Universe I would say that they are still decent and the endgame armor models are spectacular.
I had a blast in CoH while I was playing it. I am having a blast in CO and I also play DCUO from time to time and I enjoy it. When Marvel Heroes releases I am planning to try it and enjoying playing one of the marvel characters( I hope ironman or cyclops will be among the free ones).
It would be great that CoH wouldn't have to close or that CoH2 would be developed/released soon. However, that should not prevent you from enjoying other games by keeping an open mind since none of them has be a CoH clone. -
A few thinks discussed in the last 2-3 pages
Pets:
There controllable and non-controllable pets. Aside from devices there are not human pets, maybe due to CO being a hero only deal, and the concept of henchmen sounds a bit out of place. While CoH structure might give some interesting results, CO freeform lets you to have some interesting combination:
Beastmaster: command animals, primal summoning(wolfs), artic wolf.
Robotic master: munition bots, healing bots, toy bots, arcane summoning(magic robotical creatures)
Tanking:
Tanking is more complicated in CO, especially with no tanking aura. Getting aggro on all mobs is recommended and there are several AoE powers that tends to do the trick if there is no loose cannon on the team.
The survivability of a tank is dependent mostly on the build, dodge/avoidance(big bosses), defense(crowds of minions) or a combination. My tank is pretty sturdy in most situations except a few bosses with deadly poison or reflect damage.
It is true that lairs cannot be done easily by doing herding or mass crowd control, it goes more to the traditional trinity.
Notes: there are no inspirations but there are buffs that appears on the floor and there are devices for healing/defense/shield. -
Some images here too. Mostly alien robotic themed.

Excellent guide, I was hoping to see a archery guide for long time,b ut I didn't imagine I would see exactly my powersets.
However, I have to say that you are not using ice secondary almost at all, so wouldn't it be better to take other secondary?
On the other hand, for teams and pvp it is true most that you said. ice is quite controllish so any controller is going to be able to shine over you in crowd control, but it doesn't mean that you can't contribute. the ice melee powers are good if you are soloing lethal resistant mobs, and in combination with holds and stuns you can solo without much risk(on low difficulty).
I still think your build would be better for teams, but I have more fun blaptrolling shock bolt(epic power)+freezing touch then frozen fist+ice sword, then back to range. -
I don't know if it was mentioned but archery has the same problem with being almost completely lethal/smashig damage like AR does. Only one power is partially fire(Blazing arrow). It would be great that at least one of the other powers gets part of its damage different from lethal/smashing.
