Wrathgate, Demon/Storm
Oliver O'Hare's parents were part of a magical coven in Paragon. Not necessarily heroes or villains, but a group of magically gifted who tried to use their powers to help protect eachother's lives and families in a city so rife with crime. Being unable to conceive, the two turned to their group, who put them in touch with a spirit to help them. A price was demanded, and when the two agreed without reservation, they were able to have a child. The day of the birth, the "spirit" revealed himself to be overlord of a demon horde, and told the two he would claim their son in 20 years to fuel his horde's power with the life of a magical being.
For 20 tireless years Oliver's parents taught him some magical combat, noting he had an easy grasp on using storm-based elements to fuel his spells - healing and damaging were easy as long as he focused through the weather. Throughout every night one parent also stayed awake to overlay protective wards on the child as he slept.
When the demon finally came to claim Oliver, One touched wreathed them both in hellfire and teleported them to the demons homeworld. His parents' wards obliterated the demon's body, leaving only 3 bones behind. The lingering magical essence fused itself with Oliver, and by donning the skull mask and 2 ribs of their master, the horde recognized Oliver, or Wrathgate as its new leader. The demons are unflincing in their loyalty, and seem to revel in both destroying villain groups and helping heroes and citizens alike.
By using his new powers, Wrathgate attempted to teleport himself back home, but his novice understanding of the demons' portals dropped him in Praetoria, where it seemed he was expected and known, and was drafted into the Powers Division. Under the promise of helping him back to his true home, he allied himself with the Resistance, becoming a warden of their cause. Since returning to his true home, Paragon, he has presented himself to Statesman as a new breed of hero in a world of growing conflict.
... Bam. I like to write really intensive backstories for a lot of my characters.
