  1. All of my vista issues (and there were a lot of them) were resolved by upgrading to windows 7.

I started using the win7 beta when it came out and after fiddling with the graphics drivers went back to an old one that worked perfectly. This morning I installed the release candidate of win7 and the latest graphic drivers and for the first time in as far back as I can remember, it... just worked.

Windows 7 is free until June of next year for anyone who wants to try it out. In March of 2010 it will start shutting your computer down every 2 hours so for practical purposes it's free until March.

It's a 3gb download which might be painful but it only took me about an hour. I didn't even have to burn a dvd, just use winrar to unpack the .iso, click "startup" and go read a book for a few minutes. After installing the latest driver from ATI I fired up CoX and it ran perfectly.

If vista is driving you nuts give windows 7 a shot, even if only on a partition of your HD.

when I start COH it starts fine, but when the login screen comes up I get major flickering and distortion, I have tried safe mode, have done a driver sweep and downloaded the latest drivers I can find

The new ati drivers are the problem. The last driver that works with CoX and windows7 (for me) are the 8.11's. Any driver after the 8.11's gives me seizure inducing flicker when the game loads.

The only problem is rolling the driver back, I tried the 9.1's last month and ended up having to do a system restore to get the 8.11's back.

The 8.11's are rock solid for me on windows7. I have only crashed twice in CoX since I installed the windows beta/8.11 drivers and in vista I used to crash several times each day.
  3. Oh, a word of warning, after I installed the 9.1 driver on my windows7 install the only way I could get the 8.11 back on was to do a system restore. Even after I stripped the 9.1 driver off the 8.11 refused to reinstall.
  4. Anyone using Windows7 and ati, the 9.1 driver came out today... skip it. Same problems as the 8.12

8.11 is the most recent that I can get to work, that said I've had exactly 2 crashes in however many weeks I've been running it rather than the daily (hourly) crashes in CoX I was experiencing with vista. Both were blue screens but previously I was getting black screens and had to powre off my computer. So yay for windows7.

white brightness obscuring everything and flooring framerates, and also that most of the graphical settings don't seem to function re : N/A.

You're using the ati beta drivers that come with w7 aren't you? OpenGL isn't supported yet. What you need to do (or at least what worked for me) is uninstall them (a little tricky) and then install the November drivers (8.11). The december drivers cause insane strobing. You can find the 8.11's on the previous drivers page after you select your OS and card at the ati support site, yes they are VISTA drivers, but they work great in 7.

When you install the november drivers you will need to make sure that "triple buffering" and "force 24 bit" (or whatever the second selection is called) are checked in "all settings" in the catalyst control center.
  6. I finally got the ati drivers working by rolling back to 8.11 vista64 and checking both opengl options in CCC, otherwise I had some flicker. One of the selections is missing in the 8.12 drivers which leads me to believe this is an opengl issue which will probably only get weirder.

Now that I've got things working I don't know what I was really hoping for, I'm still getting "stuttering". I guess I was expecting that it was related to something I had running on my vista install, apparently not.

Odd. Maybe it's the ATI drivers? o.O

The ati win7 beta drivers don't support opengl yet, or maybe it's just the 64 beta drivers that don't, hopefully they'll come up with a functional update soon.

Mine even worse, i tried to make a movie of it, but i think the message is clear how my CoH is working in Windows 7 64bit

    YES! That's what I'm seeing.

I'm having the same problem. All other games I tested work without problems except for CoX.

I found out why CoX doesn't work well with the Win7 ATI beta drivers... OpenGL isn't in yet. I was led to believe that the regular vista drivers would work on Win7 and on the whole that appears to be the case, however in CoX I get a flickering screen, almost a strobe effect.

There seems to be more than the usual problems with ATI drivers and Win7.
  10. I've got 7 installed on a second HD and the ati drivers appear to be a mess in relation to playing CoX, no shader controls and when I try to turn on FSAA the screen whites out completely. Other than that Windows 7 seems great.
