I have been looking for a character that I really liked to become my main character for years, I have tried all sorts of characters, archetypes and power sets, but never found one that I really loved enough to play after getting to level 50, or even to 50.
But after rolling an Arachnos Widow, and getting to 50 as a Fortunata, I think I've finally found my favorite character. But I have never slotted a character with anything other Single Origin Enhancements. I want to actually make this character "good" so I am going to venture in to the world of IOs, not crazy expensive IOs, but IOs that someone on a low budget could afford (for now anyways) And I have no idea to properly build a Fortunata (I have a couple guides on Fortunatas, and have been through threads on the past ten pages in these Soldiers of Arachnos Forums, but am still lost)
So I was wondering if anyone could help me build my Fortunata, the only things that I do know about my Fortunata is that she doesn't use any of the Blood Widow Dart powers (She only uses the Fortunata Psychic powers), she uses Hasten but doesn't take Super Speed, so Fly or Super Jump would be her Travel Power, and she takes Soul Mastery because she loves Soul Tentacles, other than that, I will take and slot any powers you suggest.
I guess what I am really looking for is a build with those requirements using non-optimal, cheap IOs. If anyone could help me with this, it'd be much appreciated!
Thanks! -

Quote:I think that the Devs not being able to or not wanting to run a script that they've already run TWICE is a sign of "DOOM." They really must not expect much more life out of this game if they won't bother running this script again.Well, yeah. You can't prove that something won't ever happen -- if someone wants to predict doom should an event come to pass, it's up to them to make a solid argument for it. I think that pointing to past events and noting the lack of doom is a fair rebuttal to people saying "But... THIS could happen!"
And yes, I am being completely serious. -
Umm not exactly, you're subscribing to the game. Unless you are one of the people who hasn't logged on in years, I don't want *your* names.

Quote:So, there WILL be another Name Purge sometime after the the duration of time called "the near future" ends?We are following this thread and taking your feedback into account all.
However, to be perfectly clear: We are not currently planning another name purge in the near future. There are reasons for this, which I am not at liberty to discuss at the moment.
Instead of it being Soon™ it is going to be Later™ I suppose? You can't deny that with more time lapsing between the first Name Purge and CoH's Initial Release than the last Name Purge and now, the need for one has increased.
Thanks for following the thread! -

Because the first Name Purge did. Personally, three months might be a bit on the harsher side, but that "three month" figure is because that is what was used for the first two name purges. I would be happy with 1-year.

Quote:http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...119198&page=28Yet precisely because this is a self-selecting group, we're never going to hear from players who have quit because they're names were generic'ed when they tried to come back (or, similarly, those who did because they couldn't get the exact name they wanted).
Oh well, a single first-hand account is less unreliable than "my buddies told me that..." anecdotage.
Well here are several first-hand accounts of the wondrous results from the last Name Purge, these results are from Virtue, one of the most populated servers in City of Heroes. Look at pages 28 and keep going to around 35ish if I recall correctly, they're are tons of names being grabbed that people have been wanting, and other people compiling large lists of names now free. All because of the glorious Name Purge. Why can't this happen again?
Oh and this post in particular, http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=574, as well as this post, http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=584, just names a couple people were able to find free after the Name Purge. -
Quote:I have heard personal anecdotes from people who played during the timeline of the second name purge, and they did get a lot of names that they were looking for, they got the results they wanted. I can't imagine why we wouldn't get similar or better(considering it has been an even longer gap) results from a name purge done like the previous two, clearing the names of characters under level 35 or 6 or whatever the level was. If the results aren't what we wanted, we won't be able to blame anyone, because the devs did do what we were clamoring for them to do, run a name purge script.Unconverted trials, maybe. But when I think "detrius" I think spambot characters and junk accounts used for that purpose. Getting rid of those would be okay by me, but freeing up names of actual customers, whether or not they've got an active subscription, not so much.
Besides, if the script was run again and got similar results to the last two times, it's not going to satisfy the people who want to use the popular, taken names. They'll just call for a wider net cast. Higher level requirements, shorter idle times, and whatnot.
It's why I still stand by my opinion that the only real way to solve the "taken names" issue is to just change what's considered unique. Global names, or some kind of player ID, something along those lines.
Yeah there might be a larger number of "bad names" released in the purge, but that doesn't deter the fact that some "good names" will be released along with those "bad names." -
Quote:No, it isn't a big deal, that's why we've been asking for it to happen for so long. All this talk about 3 months...
Every time this subject comes up, most of the people in favor of a name purge settle on 1-2 years of subscription inactivity.
Honestly, it generally seems to settle on 2 years, just to be as fair as possible.
If circumstances dictate an absence of 2 or more years... Anyone upset that the name Super Iron Eagle has found a new home did not gain much perspective during those two years.
The game's been around for over 7 years of names being grabbed with a unique naming system in place.
It makes sense to open up some of the names.
Trial accounts, subscriptions that have been inactive for 5+ years!
Let's not get dragged into further hyperbole about people away for 3-6 months and how unfair it would be for them to lose their name.
Is anyone here, that is in favor of opening up some names, against setting the minimum account inactivity to two years?
Two years... IF your account has been inactive for two years straight... and IF your name is actually chosen/attempted by someone else when they create a character... You'd have to rename that character... IF... you ever come back.
Is this really that big of a deal?
One thing that needs to be included is characters of ALL levels who have been inactive for five+ years. These characters are NEVER going to be played again. Someone is more likely to start a new account then dig up their old information for a game they played when it first came out seven years ago, played a character to max level, got bored, and quit, never to even come back for Issue 2, 3, 4, City of Villains, or Going Rogue. They aren't coming back. Let's be real. -
Quote:Everyone who makes a new character after the Name Purge happens will benefit, which is all current subscribers. When you go to roll a new Blaster on your home server, searching for names will take much less time than it would have with four years of inactive character names built up. Maybe someone whose subscription lapsed will come back after reading the email they are sent before the purge. No one will lose anything from this, it's a Win/Win for NCsoft and the current subscribers. For "all" read "vocal, and inflexible, minority". Hence the second part about allocating resources - this project would be coming out of someone's budget. Unless you can demonstrate convincingly that running a name-purging script will retain enough subscriptions to both offset the attendant business costs and potential loss of returning players, then it's a non-starter.
Once again, I recommend brainstorming with a superhero name generator as a more efficient use of one's time and energies than trying to argue for this nebulous position. -
But they'll be gaining the good will of all the current players who are subscribing to City of Heroes. And that, is more valuable to them at this point then losing the good will of people who stopped caring about the game four years ago.

Quote:^This. If you are really going to be gone for *that* long due to outstanding circumstances, whether or not your character names are going to be taken shouldn't be something to worry too much about. Also, while I obviously speak only for myself, if I wasn't able to afford the cost of computer+internet+power+video game sub, I would have greater worries than whether or not The Glamburglar would still be there for me in three months.
And The Glamburgler would still be there when you get back anyways, I mean the game has been around for seven years, and someone JUST RECENTLY snagged it on Virtue. -
Quote:How little sympathy that shows for players who lapse because of circumstances beyond their control - and how little appreciation that implies for retaining good will. The server sub-forums are filled with players' announcements of departures*, for numerous reasons. Instead of generating responses like "dibs on your character names", they're greeted typically with hopes they'll come back soon. (CoH does, after all, have one of the best MMORPG communities in many respects.) Why would the devs wish to subvert that by enforced character name wipes?
As I said before, an ebil marketer would leverage this attitude by informing would-be departing players of potential name loss prior to their hitting the cancel button on their subscriptions, but I'm grateful that NCSoft, unlike some other MMO publishers, doesn't try to play these games with us.
* More, incidentally, than these irregular calls to "free the good names".
I'll believe the whole "Circumstances Out of Their Control" thing for up to six months, maybe a year, but when they've been gone for four, five, six, and seven years, I really can't see how that statement works. If you actually liked playing CoH, you would've found a way to play again in the first year. -
Quote:Hey it worked with the Merit prices on the Ascension Armor and related rewards, and that was only in Beta for two days before something was done about it. People have bringing up this topic for the past three years, every few months, and no redname ever comments on the topic. If we complain about it enough, they might y'know. Actually do something.
And yes I am aware of what Zwillinger said in the Ustream today, because I asked the question. Hopefully by not in the near future he means not tomorrow, but in a few months, I am going to remain hopeful. -
Quote:How could the second name purge be done because of a game that came out before City of Villains, if City of Villains was the reason for the first one occurring? That does not make any sense. They don't know their naming policy requires a purge that they've been neglecting. There's one big overriding factor that you haven't considered.
The initial name purge was specifically tied to the launch of CoV. They did it because there were quite a lot of villainous names tied to inactive hero characters made in the first year+ of the game when villains weren't an option. Since there hasn't been any sort of "demographic shift" like that since then, there's less reason to run the script.
The second name purge came after WoW came out and there was a big drop in subscribers also a big run of free trials offered through various gaming magazines and sites. The motivation there was a lot of names had been taken up by peeps that had just been using this game as stopping point until WoW came out. We've seen nothing like the numbers drop that happened then, and there haven't been any big rushes of free trials either, since they found out that led to a lot of added INF peddlers flooding the game. Yes we've had drops when CO and DCUO came out, but nothing like the numbers lost to WoW, and honestly from what I've seen, a significant number of those later departures came back.
Saying there's no good reason not to run the script over and over doesn't make your statement true. Nor does it mean there are real, overriding reasons to run it, like there were when they ran it before.
And the last name purge was in 2007, what competition came out near the end of Summer 2007 to warrant that name purge?
CO was a viable competitor, they even ran the Loyalty Program at that time because of it, yeah it ended up not being so great, but at the time, the fear was real. A Name Purge would have been great at that time. -
Quote:Well, considering how many threads pop up about the servers being dead, it's pretty safe to assume there are quite a few inactive accounts. At this point there are probably more inactive accounts than active accounts, and I would doubt that these inactive accounts don't have names on them. Any name taken on an inactive account is a name that is being wasted. And wasting things is selfish. Think about all the children in Paragon City starving for character names, why can't we ship all the unused names over there to help them out?I'm all in favor of having the devs run another name purge that includes all characters between levels 1 thru 50 if for no other reason than to listen/read the howls of frustration and angry posts when the whiners and crybabies find out that the name they want is still being used by an active account.

Quote:No, your anecdotal evidence did not beat my anecdotal evidence because those names were free on Virtue for a reason. Really, Glamburgler? I would hardly call that a "snag" and if I did snag that, I wouldn't tell anyone. It's a punny name, but really, I wouldn't be surprised to find it available. The others are decent, but I am sure they weren't your first choices. You actually tried Wave for Tide Shifter, and Eagle for Albanian Eagle, and Thunder for Miss Thunderstrike. But all of those were taken, so you had to settle. If there had been a name purge, you might have gotten a couple names on your first try.In the past couple months or so on Virtue, I've snagged Sister Pact, Glamburgler, Tide Shifter, Albanian Eagle, Opposite Force - which I also got on Freedom, and Miss Thunderstrike. My ancedotal evidence just beat your ancedotal evidence. Its all about the creativity. If the name you're looking for is taken, try another one. The sky's the limit, and there's no penalty for being unique.
(For fellow Virtues, Miss Thunderstrike is currently open and available to a good home.)
I hated when threads like these get to the point where people try to say "No way! Good names are still out here! I just found "_____" on a highly populated server!" Well "_____" was available for a reason, and just because you got lucky with a few names, doesn't mean the other thousand people on your server are getting lucky with names. And every name that you think is good that you snag, is one less name that is "good" available to everyone else, still making a name purge on names from accounts that have been inactive for years necessary. -
Quote:But they have done Name Purge(s) in the past, so it is something they do again, so they KNOW their naming policy requires a purge every, at least, couple years, they just haven't been doing it.The returning customer is only a better potential customer than a cold lead. But unless losing existing customers are a problem, there's no reason to do anything that would create a barrier for a previous customer to return. Outside of entreprenneurial ventures, business stay in business by practicing conservative decision-making, especially in an economy like this.
Or, colloquially, unless you can convince Paragon that their naming policy is broke, they ain't gonna fix it.
And also, yes, I know people that have left the game over frustration from not being able to find decent names for their characters. Naming your character is the last stage of character creation, and one of the most important parts. There is no reason to hold down names for people that are NOT coming back, and forcing people that are currently subscribing, and new players, to have to go through hundreds (not exaggerating) of names before finding a somewhat decent (not good) name for their character.
Really, no one is going to come back to a game after six or seven years of not playing it. If City of Villains didn't bring them back, and City of Heroes Going Rogue didn't bring them back (it's been almost a year) they are NOT coming back. So using this as your argument really doesn't work. I know some people come back after years of inactivity, but it is really infrequent. Are the five people who come back after years of inactivity (if they just came back to check out the game, they may not like what they see and leave, a lot has changed in the past few years) each year really worth not running a script to make new players and current subscribers want to stay longer? I don't think so. I don't think anyone thinks so. -
Quote:Actually a lot of them are! There is a nifty little feature in the game called /getglobalname, and it has a few functions.Once again though, you're assuming all the "good names" are taken by people who would be eligible to release their names.
1) It gives you the global name of the character with a name you are looking for, if you use often for a name, you can sort of see if that player actually plays, I have been doing this for dozens of names, everyday, at different times of the day, for a couple of years. These names never appear online, so yeah they should be eligible to get released.
2) It can show up "blank" meaning the particular name you are searching for belongs to a person that's hasn't played since BEFORE we were all given global names, which was like what, six years ago?! I don't care what level these characters are, if they haven't been used in six years, they really aren't going to be used on that account ever, no, they're not coming back after six years, and anyone that says there is a chance of them coming back is really just being silly.
If someone hasn't played in six or seven years, all of their names should be released, regardless of what level they are, because really, they're not coming back. Really, any account that has become inactive for over two years should get all their names released, regardless of their level, not just level six characters, their level fifty characters too.
It's the type of game this is, it is a Superhero game, super heroes don't need to be name xXFyre GirIXx(the "l" is a capitol "i" because xXFyre GirlXx with a real "l" in Girl was taken) if Fire Girl stopped going on active hero duty five years and doesn't plan on picking up the cape again. It's not fair.
They've run a name purge before, so we know they can do it. I really don't see any possible argument against running it again. It worked the first time, and made tons of people happy to find that name they've been looking for, why not just do it again?
