I'm surprised you aren't dead. Drew Hayes of Poison Elves fame has this and very nearly is.
I'm not talking about an apnea condition - I'm talking about forcing yourself to remain *fully awake*. While you rest you're doubtless getting better 'sleep' than some people do going to college or working hard at an office 12 hours a day.
Your brain in particular might have adjusted to this condition, but it's by no means normal. Technically speaking you indeed should be six feet under. You sir, may be a medical miracle... Did you gain water weight in your feet? Just wondering, because that's what happened to Drew. (well, across his whole body, but feet first as they're farthest away from the heart.) It's a good sign that your heart can't handle being oxygen deprived by the choking.
But no, my ex worked with a professor who was doing dream and sleep studies. It's quite true that enforced lack of sleep will push your brain past the point of recovery. Maybe it only happens in certain people, but ... that's the research I was told.
Some drugs aid this process - e for instance, which can literally turn off the brain's ability to sleep, become thirsty, etc. Had a friend who lost a girlfriend because her brain stopped telling her to be thirsty after taking e...
Video games fortunately aren't that bad.... -

It's not "someone" who died playing games, it's a bunch of people. That guy in the internet cafe was just one. There were about two or three people who played Diablo 2 till they died, and a bunch of people in Korea playing Korean MMORPG's till they died. Not the kind of this that appears in your everyday newspaper, but if you keep up with gaming news and visit forums, you can find these things out...

There's only one documented case that I know and that's the 86 hour one. He would have died anyway if he was *awake* that long, as your brain does in fact shut down after about 48 hours. It is irreversable brain damage after about 50.
Notice how most of these cases occur in internet cafes in Korea? What *exactly* are they doing that makes them so vulnerable to this? I don't know of any American cases, other than "blaming a game for them blowing their brains out" which is the Sony case I recall now. Thrown out, as I recall, but I might be jumping the gun, I don't know for sure if it's completely over.
In any case, how many MILLIONS of people play online, pc, ps2 or whatever games and DO NOT do this? It's not a case of "it's happening all the time! It must be stopped!" It's a case of weeding out the weaklings. Literally - if you can't remember to freaking SLEEP, honestly how can you hold down a job, a family, or anything else? Addictive personalities CAN go that far, but not under any large percentage of the population.
It's like the people who go out and bite their parents to death claiming they're Vampires because of the Vampire Masquerade game. Bull Crap Ola. They did it because they were STUPID and CRAZY. The game did NOT make them do it. Judas Priest did NOT make those kids commit suicide - their depressive home conditions and oblivious parents did. D&D has not yet made me into a satanic witch casting ritual magic spells and I've been playing it for what? 25 years?
So...... no. It's not something that anyone needs to worry about. The pokemon "flashing image" epilepsy thing yeah, because there are more people who will respond IF their screen refresh rate and their video game goes in just the right tiny way. Not all epileptics need to worry. Not all games will flicker that way. In their case, better safe than sorry and we see the warnings on boxes. But ... I dread the day when some law firm makes me read a stupid label. I know better. Most other people do too. Give them some credit... -
Yeah it was some guy in an internet cafe in the Orient. I can't remember precisely what city or if he was playing EQ. I think it was, is that a sony game? Sony was taking a hit for it socially. The guy was on for 36 or more hours STRAIGHT and then pretty much up and died because he hadn't gotten up and moved, eaten, or rested.
It *can* be a serious problem. But... really. Some common sense goes a LONG way. -
My name is Lethe, and I'm an Alt-aholic.
I am *so* guilty of playing way more than I think i should, but then I also just joined a gym, and am trying to get back into my regular tabletop rpg group. (with.... superheroes.) I still write my web pages, and I'm going to be participating in National Novel Writing Month. I think that's a pretty good schedule of events.
And I can visit Legoland too, because I've got a year pass.
..... So..... what's the problem again? OOOoh yeah that when I wake up in the middle of the night complaining that the interface doesn't work or the power buttons aren't going off it's because I AM SLEEP PLAYING THE GAME... With my HANDS in the AIR and my eyes WIDE OPEN....
(true!) -
I really think that your age, the number of hours you play versus your (school / work / activities otherwise) are factors here. Obviously we can't tell you OR them what to do.
I'm more of the opinion that yes, games are much better than being out stealing cars or doing drugs. A lot of people - mostly internet-ignorant ones - believe that what we do here on forums and in general on the net is not "socialization" yet it is. Very much so.
Do you get much sleep? Will you call in sick to work if you just really want to play? Have you ditched school to play? THOSE are things that would worry anyone and give credence to their worries.
The last thing we need at CoH is for some idiot doctor or lawyer to determine "Gaming IS an addiction!! loooooook! It makes people BAAAAAD!" with all the accompanying fever. Yes it dies down after a while but... There WAS that guy who died playing that other game. Nonstop for what, 3 days? Stupid idiot. Freakin' sleep.
Just be careful if you're under 18, as someone said, and if you ARE under 18 yup you're going to have to do it. If not, examine the facts yourself. DO you over play the game? DO you have trouble doing other things in favor of it? *shrug* that's all I can add.... -
Daaang!
I'd love to see those for MY Irregulars (the Comic Gallery Irregulars - our store customer's team). Great work!! If I had the time I'd definitely try it. Okay if I had the TALENT and the time. -
Having my main toon as an ele/ele blaster I think this is a great idea, to have the end-stopper on every attack. Just a minute percentage, but if that's all we're attacking with it adds up.
Realistically - you're just zapped with say, ZAPP (the greatest sniping power EVAR) and suddenly you just jump right up and say "wow, there's the hero get her!" it's not gonna happen! You're gonna say, "holy crap! I just went down to less than half my hp in ONE freakin' hit! I can't do anything just because it's so freaking awesome!"
Okay so that's my semi-fictional account of what should happen but still....
I love my ele blaster. I do feel a bit too exposed and vulnerable when I have to get in too close and use short circuit, which I do have, which does a great job - when it hits. I am not playing a Scrapper. I don't want to be close to everything. I'd far rather play sniper at a distance...
But I've never noticed a single significant end drain on ANY of my powers on ANYthing - minions or up. I agree that the tactic of just piling on the damage where it counts is the best thing in that case, until they stop nerfing the end drains and allow us to do our jobs... -
I'm more worried about Lead Scorchers or Shockers who also cast Heal on their minions.... What the heck kind of power set is THAT? That's utterly unfair, since not one of us can create a character who can zapp AND heal.
