Will anything be archived?

Are the developers going to box our characters in the event they come out with City of Heroes in the future. Will we be able to save our characters? Will our accounts be archived?

There are no devs around for that.

There is sentinel plus ( http://cit.cohtitan.com/sentinelplus/ )which makes a file of your character's bio, badges, global name, etc but I don't know if such a file can be used should CoH be revived down the line.

That's the only thing I know of.

My guess is the hard drives will be reformatted so the server hardware can be used for something else, and that no one in charge is even interested in saving anything.

I think that legally they have to archive the data for something like 2 or 5 years, but I think you're right otherwise. NCSoft wants this swept under the rug ASAP.

They could probably save the all the character data for the entire playerbase of this game on something like a few terabytes of diskspace give or take. It wouldn't be that difficult to store that on a few hard drives that could be locked in a safe somewhere. My guess is that they'll keep an image of the latest live/beta server builds and those too could be kept on a relatively few hard drives. The server hardware could then be re-used for whatever else they wanted after the shutdown.

Whatever skeleton crew is currently running the servers now is probably tasked with creating those final archives. Of course the question is whether any of it would ever be used again...

I'd expect it to go like it does in Hollywood after a series is canceled. Something gets stored somewhere in some half-hearted attempt that no one still around even cares about, and then completely forgotten after that.

Maybe someone else will find those drives containing the stored data. And you know, later on they need them for something and they're too cheap to buy new hardware, so... bye bye whatever was on there! No one must have cared about it anyway if it was just sitting there with no labels or notes.

I'm just saying that you shouldn't count on it being saved, even if they're obligated to do so. "Accidents happen" and all that.
