10 comic book deaths that still (mostly) matter

But with Captain Marvel, I think they'll bring him back just as soon as it's convenient. His death is surprisingly tenuous considering it happened like 25 years ago.

I would guess that the Current Carol Danvers Captain Marvel book (which I thought was pretty bad after only two issues) will have a revival at least teased.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

Well Rick Remender who wrote the AvX tie in that briefly revived Marv via the Phoenix and then had the Phoenix kill him again is said to have tweeted "how do you know that was the last of him?" His body did soft land on a planet and plant life began growing around it most likely due to residual phoenix energies. As soon as I read that and got past my disgust that they still won't permanently revive him I began to think of Star Trek 2 and 3 and how the Genesis energies restored Spock......

Marv's death though did serve to inspire:

1. monica rambeau, she took the name then read up on Marv and was determined to live up to the name

2. Wendell Vaughn/Quasar: the next Protector of the Universe after Mar-Vell, determined to live up to his predecessor's legend, also reveal that his quantum bands are meant for the universal protector.

3. Genis, son of Mar-Vell. Determined to live up to the legend and make his father proud. unjustly had his book cancelled and killed off due to Joe Q mandate.

4. Carol Danvers, always had feelings for Marv and was there in AvX when he returned and his sacrifice and a pep talk from Captain America inspires her to take the name.

Here's the problem though as I see it: marvel has had the trademark to produce a Captain Marvel book since the 60's due to DC's oversight in not getting the trademark, hence DC cannot publish a Captain Marvel book and now just calls him SHAZAM. Captain Mar-Vell died a very mortal and rather FINAL death in a touching story and he is the only major character to perish in such a fashion. It's one thing to come back from bombs, bullets, lasers, teleporter errors, incineration, disintegration, etc etc etc., but to come back from a death such as his.......is tricky. CIVIL WAR THE RETURN; gave us a time displaced Marv who learns how he perishes and the cancer is slowly building in him so we had a good potential story about him reaffirming his legend and risking death in the present vs. the past only for Marvel to chicken out and make him a skrull copy. It's also been established during his two brief revivals that he doesn't WANT to return (Cosmic Powers Unlimited and AvX) and that he believes his time is done.

Marvel has a trademark that they stubbornly refuse to let go but also don't know what to really do with it. Either make a viable replacement and stick with it (Genis or Carol) or else suck it up and revive Captain Mar-Vell.

I know someone who has done some work for Marvel. Several years ago (back in the 80's and 90's, and maybe into the 2000's), there used to be a saying around the Marvel offices: "The only two people who stay dead are Uncle Ben and Captain Marvel". But now that new management has taken over and all the old editors are gone, I'm guessing all bets are off.

Well Peter has met some alternate Earth uncle Ben's and recently there was a timewarp story where Peter met his Uncle Ben again, and I think in an anniversary issue years ago Doctor Strange gave Peter a gift that allowed Ben's spirit to return for a brief chat with Peter. Bringing back uncle Ben would completely wreck Spider-man as a character and would be even more catastrophic then Spidey making a deal with the devil.

As to Mar-Vell, his death at the time was also part of Marvel ending their cosmic characters and books for awhile. Adam Warlock and Thanos were already dead, in fact Thanos' spirit was sent be Death to collect Mar-Vell. Soon after, Drax the Destroyer was killed off. Then comes the 90's, Starlin returns to Marvel and revives Thanos, then Drax, then Adam Warlock......but Marv stayed dead. Quasar was the new Protector of the Universe and Silver Surfer was the anointed champion to battle Thanos, so there was no need for Mar-Vell
