How much would you pay?
I'd pay double. Heck, I would have paid 100,000 Paragon Points for a custom, one of a kind costume.
pohsyb: so of all people you must be most excited about the veats
Arachnos Commander: actually, I am
pohsyb: I mean you kinda were one already anyways ^_^
Arachnos Commander:
I'd go up to double, but I'd hope there were lower price points available since it'd be hard to get new people to sub at $30/month.
None of the other MMOs I play or have tried are so friendly when it comes to grouping with friends. Easy interzone travel, other than TFs levels only matter in which powers you have, no real gear grind, and just about any combination of ATs can succeed.
Up another $5 is about as high as I'm willing to go. I love the game and I want to help, but we have to be realistic here - I also like to eat and have spare cash to buy other stuff I don't strictly need for my survival. Like another large Lego set. You wouldn't believe how expensive those are.
But the question is a bit loaded. City of Heroes: Freedom isn't a full subscription game, so I don't believe that's how it should be judged in terms of cost. I wouldn't be willing to spend more than $5 per month because... Well, because it's "per month." But I'd have little trouble dropping large sums of money for specific one-off purchases. For instance, when Cape and Aura unlocks were made available, I dropped... What was that? $10 for that? Yeah, I can unlock them in-game, but I wanted to support the company and it was an easy sell. $10 for doing ostensibly nothing? Sure. Unlock all the Rularuu weapons with nothing extra? I'd drop $10 for that, easy.
What you have to remember about running a F2P game is that when it's expensive, it fails. Sure, the devoted of us may pay more, but WE aren't the ones who will support the game long-term. Regular, "non-loyal" customers are the ones who are footing most of the bill. It's why Marketing gets chastised for not advertising - because we need fresh blood and a larger player base. It's why I see Freedom as a success - because it was managing to sell us things above and beyond our VIP status. I bought all the costume sets, even the ones I didn't need to, I got almost all the powersets and so on.
"We" can't pay for City of Heroes to stay afloat, and an expensive F2P title will not succeed.

Up to double, but I've been buying 1 year subscriptions for a couple years now.
Deamus the Fallen - 50 DM/EA Brute - Lib
Dragos Bahtiam - 50 Fire/Ice Blaster - Lib
/facepalm - Apply Directly to the Forehead!
Formally Dragos_Bahtiam - Abbreviate to DSL - Warning, may contain sarcasm
i would pay up to $5 extra for monthly sub fee
but i also normally buy about $15+ worth of paragon points in addition to my sub every month if there are good things in the market
in the last year ive easily spent about $300+ extra on points in addition to my 3 month sub
Currently, I am a VIP subscriber who has paying quarterly. While I get a discount for that, I honestly don't do it for the discount - I switched to quarterly it to try to make it less likely that some issue with my credit card blocked my renew. So I would have currently been paying $15 per month without giving it much thought.
I love the game, but I don't think I could realistically justify fully paying double that for it on a monthly basis. It's not that I can't afford it. I can. But I have to compare what else that monthly spend could buy me, and there comes a point where, though I love the game dearly, the outlay just doesn't make enough sense.
You see, I already maintain two VIP accounts, so whatever I propose, I'm paying double already.
So if pressed to pay more to save something I really, really don't want to lose, I would say I could see up to +$10 per month, per account.
Bear in mind that I do spend money on points these days. Not that much more, but I do pay more than my ~$30/mo., in spurts.
Blue
American Steele: 50 BS/Inv
Nightfall: 50 DDD
Sable Slayer: 50 DM/Rgn
Fortune's Shadow: 50 Dark/Psi
WinterStrike: 47 Ice/Dev
Quantum Well: 43 Inv/EM
Twilit Destiny: 43 MA/DA
Red
Shadowslip: 50 DDC
Final Rest: 50 MA/Rgn
Abyssal Frost: 50 Ice/Dark
Golden Ember: 50 SM/FA
Hmm... double might be possible for my budget, but I can see that being tough for others.
I wouldn't be offended by adding levels to VIP statuses. $30 subscriptions give you VIP Elite status with a few more perks than what regular VIPs get. And if VIP costs $20 instead of $15, I'd be ok with that to keep the game alive.
(besides, after 8 years, $20 is only about a $1 more than what inflation would require for keeping up)
@Rylas
Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
I don't see this as a hypothetical question of "let's see how much we're willing to pay, so that the corporates know how much they can charge us." I'm viewing this as a display of just how much this game is worth to this community.
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
Atm with my current work situation - extra $5 is ok for me - that's about £15 .. otherwise i don't mind double it so it's £20
Personally double, but if it were relaunched, the standard rate should be the norm and hardcores really should just get a second account and, if the market stays with us, buy points. if there becomes a gold vip setup where you pay double it would have to not carry any unbalancing implications, this is about real word survival, not ingame rewards.
I already buy additional points beyond my sub fee. I would keep doing so and be willing to pay an additional $5 (that's on four accounts, mind you). The game was making money hand over fist from me before in the 'double' range.

Governments have fallen to the power of social media. Gaming companies can too.
Voted 'other' because there's really no sustainable subscription price that I'd balk at. I've dumped a lot more on the market, once I started going full store-bought enhancements on anyone that wasn't already at 50.
Angel Witch II - Chord of Souls - Storm Witch II - Princess of the Dawn - Standing Horse - Witch of Xymox
Silent Scream - Shadow Witch II - Liquid Serenade - Nebulous Dawn - Ghost Witch II -Xiberia
15 dollars a month for a subscription is already around the top of what the MMO market will bear. Asking for more is asinine.
As much as necessary (and that I can sanely afford) to save this awesome game.

We *both* came to the agreement that the days of $15/£8.99/12.99 were drawing to an end.
We felt that $9.99/£6.99/7.99 would be more in line (side note: the non US$ prices roughly equate $9.99 as it stands today) with a global market, whilst opening it up to more players.
If you had Microtransactions, you should possibly think about reducing the sub fee, and then try to monatise the extra's up to what you are expecting to be paid as a sub fee.
But nowadays, the sub fee rate is a bit too high, especially with purse strings getting tighter and tighter.
Up to double.
But I am no good with things I am passionate about. See my art gallery for proof. $12,000 later lol...
*ahem*
