Thorns/Damage Reflect mechanic possible?

I think this would be great to see in CoH. I don't know if it would add any additional strain on the system but it would be interesting. Armor sets could use it in place of a damage aura, and it could be part of a buff set even.

Thoughts?

Possible? Of course.
Pretty sure a reflection style mechanic couldn't be added without a lot of coding work.
Guessing that by a thorns mechanic you mean a power that only attacks in response to an attack. That would probably be simpler, but still require adding new code.

What if we simplified things, and have an ability that causes damage only when you are at a certain health level automatically? That is something we can already do - having effects trigger at varying health ranges.

If it is "thorns", as in they are spiky so when you hit them it hurts, you'd have to do additional coding to keep ranged damage from activating it as well. Though that'd probably be easier than adding the mechanic in the first place.

Actually, the game engine can. The servers can't handle it.

I had a PM response from Castle before he left telling me that it was possible and not even all that difficult (still incredibly time consuming though).

It would just put so much strain on the servers trying to calculate every incoming attack for the purpose of reflecting it that it would lag everything down on the server side, and was thus an ability that he wouldn't allow players to have. I forget the term he used, but it was something techy.

With the dev team having changed since then the overall stance on this may have changed, but since it was a valid reason for being against it in the first place I wouldn't count on it.

If we see it at all, it will likely be as an ability a specific NPC has, as that can be controlled. With no way to control the number of players using a mechanic like this, it's asking for a server meltdown if they put it in a player available set.
