Blanker build ...

Don't think I'd do Energy as a primary due to the knockback.I'd probably opt for Rad/Fire/Cold

Maybe something like this

With Incarnates I'd definately take Melee for Hybrid

I've always preferred /Fire for tanking because it has two auras, one of which has an auto-hit component. But /Nrg will have some strong survivability options with Power Boost and a defense build. I'd also consider Aid Self, which also works very well combined with Power Boost.

I think I'd try to build using a resistance APP and get as much defense from other places as possible. I'd strongly consider Force or Flame for the APP with a small consideration for Electric.

Below is an idea. I'd strongly consider Spiritual Radial, but I used Agility Radial for now. I'd likely slot Energize (Conserve Power) with the 3 Miracles that include recharge and then any cheap Heal/Rech IO. I'd lean towards Void or Vorpal for Judgement, Diamagnetic Core Interface, Storm Radial for Lore, and the Clarion Radial for Destiny.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.

Power Boost doesn't accept set IOs, only common IOs. So 2 or 3 recharge and that's it.

Power Boost doesn't take any sets. You could use SOs, but level 50 common IOs are better (my build all has level 40s, because I have my default set to 40 and didn't bother changing it, but I'd use 50s for the commons once I could (and I use whatever is available for sets, although I usually try to stay level 35 or higher).

You will still likely want to eat inspires pretty often, I'd consider one of those binds to convert inspires into purples. Hit PB before eating each Alpha and you only need one luck, although I'd be prepared to drop a second one if things get rough (although that is what Personal Force Field is for too).

The difficult thing will be holding aggro. This build does not generate enough hate. I am not sure how to rectify that. Spamming Explosive Blast as much as possible was my main idea, but I don't know if that would be enough.

If only there was a ranged IO set that procked taunts...I kinda guessed there'd be no IO sets for PB. I'll keep this in mind, and I'll probably wait until i24 actually comes out before I really get to work building...Gonna have to rebuild my DPS and Blastroller Builds anyway.

If Masterminds didn't suck, they'd be the most powerful AT in the game.

Thing is, with a tanker-wannabe blaster, it's all about "mitigation" rather than aggro control.

In that case, Energy with it's basic "Get the **** off of me!" KB potential is actually a good thing since there really isn't any appreciable resistance built in.

Alright, here's my attempts at a defense-based build. I tried to also slot in a little knockback for when things get messy. I also found something odd: When I have Power Boost used for the calculations, it increases my defenses for some reason...hrm...

That's normal. Power boost increases the strength of defense powers, no different really than Build Up increases the damage strength of damaging attacks. Its a pretty big boost, higher than the boost you get from actually slotting the defense power itself.

The problem is that unless you have enormous recharge in your build, Power Boost cannot be made perma (it requires 400% total recharge to do that). But some people use it at the start of the fight to have maximum defense during the alpha volley of attacks from the spawn.

Good to know, Arcanaville. Do you have any tips on how to improve this build?

This build is soft capped for S/L defense and within 1 small purple insp of the softcap for both Ranged defense and Energy Defense.

No powers selected as mere set mules and all powers usable as slotted.

Energy/Energy/Mace is quite versatile. You can easily tweak power slotting and IO sets to arrange defense values to suit your preferences

If you're actually trying to make an energy/energy tank? Depends on what you're willing to do. One thing you should keep in mind is that unless you're willing to build it and then redo it again in a month or two, I24 is going to change the options around completely. In particular, any attempt to build a high mitigation energy/energy should reserve at least four slots for conserve power, because its becoming an Energize variant in I24. That means it will have a small heal, and a large regeneration buff in it, and it will be possible to make it perma which means you'll have perma-conserve power (possibly at a lower discount value, but still pretty strong).

Also, I think your build doesn't use the +3% Gladiator proc, and these days that's just a few hundred million, not two billion.

One tough call is whether to go scorpion shield for maximum defense, or go bonfire with the knockdown proc to get a serious amount of close-in mitigation. If you're going to try to jump into a spawn and mix it up in or near melee range, Bonfire could actually provide more mitigation than defense will verses critters without knockback protection.

Just to be different, while I can't quite figure out how to get the level of defense I want out of this build, maybe someone else can improve it. Its a powerboost defense, zip in, drop a bonfire, melee smash everything build:

It reserves four slots for conserve power which is becoming energize in I24. It should be pretty tough against smash/lethal enemies, and decent during the power boost uptime against energy/negative. The weakness I'm most uncomfortable with is the AoE hole, but hopefully most things will be flopping around too much to throw a lot of AoEs.

FYI, the beta servers have been patched to I24 beta just now, so the theoretical just became the practical: you should now strongly consider building your tanker-blaster for I24 rather than I23.
