Illusion/Empath

Hi!

I was wondering if I could get some input on this build.

I enjoy playing support and have fallen in love with illusion control.
I also like the empath power sets so this has become my favorite char of mine to play.

One thing I wanted was to get as close to Perma PA as possible.

If we disregard the question of price and only look to a good slotted
build. Is this a good one and can it be made better?

I don't have Mids' at the moment and can't crunch numbers, but I do have an Illusion/Empath.

What is your attack chain? Illusion/Empathy is rather lacking in this regard, and it gets kind of boring standing around twiddling your thumbs with no attacks available and nobody in need of healing. I think it's best to take a real attack from an ancillary power pool to chain with Blind and Spectral Wounds. However, it's just possible <crosses fingers> that upcoming changes to the Presence pool might make pool powers a viable option for the attack-starved Controller.

What about ATO sets? Will of the Controller can give you a better recharge bonus than Basilisk's Gaze, and better enhancement values than a level 30 set to boot.

Deceive wants a Contagious Confusion proc! It's awesome.

You have a lot of slots in Health and Stamina for an Empath. Those slots could be better utilized elsewhere.

Regeneration Aura is a power of questionable utility these days, and probably the most skippable thing in Empathy. I'm tempted to say that Flash might be more fun and useful. Flash is a pretty questionable power too, but since you are making a recharge-oriented build, its terribly long recharge may be mitigated somewhat.

I'm happy you pointed out Regen Aura, cause I've been hearing bad things
about it, so dropping it is something I might do. As for attack chain, it's
severely lacking. At the moment I usually weave Blind, Deceive and ST for
the CC's, PA on Tough groups or bosses, while maintaining Fortitude on
selected targets. Heals when needed and a SW now and then.

Should be mentioned that I'm only lvl 37 atm and it's my highest leveled char.
When it comes to Ancillary/Epic Pools I'm totally clueless. Have no idea whats
good and not. From what I've read Primal's are the first choice for many
supporters. Other than that I don't really know. Suppose something that
deals Ranged AoE dmg would be nice. Fire Mastery? (Fire Ball, Phoenix and
Consume perhaps)

I played around with it some more and updated my build in first post.
More ideas are much appreciated.

Recall Friend doesn't need endurance reduction, but it's a good spot for a Blessing of the Zephyr knockback resist IO.

If ultimate recharge is your goal, you can still fit in one more Luck of the Gambler if you take (for example) Afterburner instead of Consume. You can also still give Phantom Army more of its own recharge if you replace the Buildup proc with the Accuracy/Recharge IO in the same set. That should be enough to make Phantom Army officially, technically, barely "permanent".

I will offer the disclaimer that my own build did not go this crazy on recharge. I decided after a certain point that it was "good enough" and tried to work in better defenses and damage resistance. Phantom Army is great, but it is possible to sacrifice too much for recharge.

Posted

Heh, I did as you suggested with switching charged up to recharge and consume to afterburner and that actually puts PA under 60s (59.99 :P)

But the chance for charge up on PA feels like keeper though. If I understand
it correctly, it has a change to proc on every attack made by all 3 pets. And
with a low CD on PA it should be going off fairly often.
If I keep it as is atm, with the change to Recall Friend to a Zephyr, PA gets
to 65s. Which I suppose is "good enough".

Just to be curious though. If you changed the build however you wanted,
how would you build it then?

Not sure about skipping regen aura..Sure, Destiny Rebirth is pretty common, but you wont see it pre lvl 45.

Primal Mastery is good for an emp. Conserve power to stagger with recovery aura (for yourself obviously) power boost for heal and fort and holds, a decent, fast single target blast.

Some people like pools such as the fire epic on emps, for damage. I say..if you want damage THAT bad..make something that is actually 'meant' to do damage. Also, consume is on such a stupid long rech as to be worthless without major slotting.

Posted

Now I'm getting conflicted again. Guess the only thing that can decide for me
is my own experience. But it's gonna take a while to get there.

I'm not sure how Consume really works, but if i read it right it has a duration
for 120s. Not sure if that's for drain or fire dmg or both, for the entire
duration. But with the recharge heavy slotting I have now it has cd of
122s. Meaning I can keep it up almost constantly. If that is a good thing or
not, you tell me.

And as I level up there's bound to be changes. I might figure out there's a
spell I absolutely hate and then need to redo the whole thing.

Edit:
Should also be mentioned that the build is something I'm aiming for to have
at lvl 50 and to play in that lvl. On my current build I actually have Regen Aura
but felt it was lacking a bit. But then at 50 it might be worth having?
But as I understand it, Incarnate powers gives good heal/regen, so the regen
from the aura might be redundant?

Consume is a pbaoe, that gives you end per target hit, does very very minor damage, as it goes off (ONE hit of damage) and provides some end drain resistance.

End drain resistance means just what it sounds like...if an attack hits you that drains 25% end (with a base end of 100, thats 25 units of end) and you have the end drain res from consume on (I forget what the value is, but lets say 50%), that attack will only take 13% of your end.

Be aware, as far as I can remember, consume does NOT provide recovery debuff resistance. That is when a power actually slows the rate at which your regain end, as opposed to taking a chunk of it. Many end modifying attacks do both drain and recovery but Consume only helps vs the drain bit.
(From what I recall, someone might be able to confirm that)

So really, while having some end drain protection might sound great..to actually get best use from it, you would NEED to be firing consume every 2 mins, regardless of if you actually need the +end at the time...meaning its very possible that when you DO need the end..it wont be ready.

Regen aura is not any less lacking at 50, I feel. It is a..subtle power I guess you can say, cause it just sits there improving your regen. And yes destiny rebirth IS popular, but it is hardly a given in every situation, and Regen Aura provides a constant +regen, unlike rebirth. But you can also get Rebirth always active, at the highest level...
I'd say Clarion is the best destiny for squishies bar none. Especially Radial, with an emp.

Also..we don't have 'spells' in CoX

For your Illusion side, you may want to take a look at my Illusion/Rad guide -- link is in my sig. I strongly recommend that you fit in a single target blast from your APP set. At this point, you have fire APP and Fire Blast is the best single target blast. Ice Blast is nearly as good (only lacks Fire's DoT), and then both Primal and Psi work well, but are slightly slower.

My guide explains how important having an attack chain of Blind-SW-Blast-SW is to the amount of damage you can do. It gives you a continual attack chain and lets you take advantage of Spectral Damage better. I consider the single target blast to be more important that the AoE Blast.

I'd drop Consume since you already have an Endurance Recovery power that does not rely upon you running into melee. I've never been impressed with Consume on a controller even though I have the Fire APP on several of my controllers. I take Rise of the Phoenix over Consume since it is the only self-rez available to controllers.

I don't have an Ill/Emp . . . Ill/Rad (x2), Ill/Storm, Ill/TA, Ill/Cold, Ill/Time, but not Ill/Emp. I know many people go with the Primal APP pool because Power Boost does some good things to the Emp buffs. There are only a few powers that benefit from Power Boost on the Illusion side, so I'd only recommend it if you if you focus more on your Emp side. It really depends on how team-oriented you are.

I played around with an Ill/Emp build to get max Recharge, and here's what I came up with:

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Wow, that Ill/Rad guide of yours is doozy. Excellent work.

Honestly I feel it's hard to choose among these APP sets. They all bring nice
things. Dropping Consume for Fire Ball is a good idea, After MisterD's post, I
was starting to question that choice myself.

I want to be team oriented but would like to be able to do things solo at a
reasonable pace, when needed. I do like the "healing" part of the build, but if
I had to choose between them I'd have to go with Illusion, I just love it too much.
Any who....

For a single target attack, what if you'd go with APP Mace Mastery and take
Poisonous Ray? It's a single target Dot with -RES (-18.75%) and -DEF
(-15%). It deals moderate dmg and would benefit my pets and teams
damage, right?

I suppose the Fire Blast does more dmg than PRay, does the Debuff make up
for that?

I've re-posted the build in first post again.
I've reduced the slots in Phoenix and SI to cap out a few skills I felt
(atm atleast) I really wanted. Recall Friend is something I've figured out
I really want to keep. I use it all the time and don't think I want to part with it.

As the build is now PA gets to 61.49s and I keep Fire Blast and Fire Ball
for better dps. If noone strongly objects to it being totally crazy, I feel
pretty happy with it.

But as I stated earlier there is bound to be changes later.

As for you contributors, thank you for your time and input. It has been
very nice to get some insight from more experienced players.

The problem with the Mace Attack is the recharge. Fire Blast's recharge is 8 sec base, so you can get it down to about 2.5 sec. Blind and SW both activate in 1.1 sec, and Fire Blast activates in 1.2, so you can see how this can be a very fast attack chain. Mace's Poisonous Ray recharges in 24 seconds base, so you can get that down to about 9 seconds, and the activation is 2 seconds. That simply won't work in a Blind-SW-Blast-SW continual attack chain. The debuffs would be nice, but I consider the non-stop attack chain to be more important.
