Critique And Suggestions requested: Dark/Regen Scrapper

A LOT has changed since the last time I played this guy. My old build plan is irrelevant, so I had to come up with something new without really being sure how much has changed while I was gone. I mocked something up in the latest version of Mid's, I'd really like to get Critique on it, and suggestions on how to improve it. I can respec and replace as much as needed. This guy usually pairs with a controller only, so he doesn't have to keep anybody's attention, but he has to survive pretty well on his own, and he has to do plenty of damage.

Here's what I've got right now. I've only got about half of the IO sets listed, the rest I'll have to work on acquiring. Take them as a tentative goal.

That said, here are a few places where some advice would help you:

Overall Goals: Build for +Rech, S/L Def, then more +Rech. Luck of the Gambler Global Recharges, 7.5% Rech Set bonuses, Kinetic Combats and Reactive Armors are your best friends.

Scrapper's Strike: You can 5-slot the set for a Catalyzed 10% Rech boost, or split the set for 2 5% S/L Defense bonuses. Up to you based on how other powers are slotted.

As a primary attack, Shadow Maul sucks, IMO. The rooted animation is too long, and the cone is too narrow. I use it in my build to mule a S/L Def boost, but hardly ever actually use the power. It is a waste of that Armageddon set, IMO. I have that set in Soul Drain, which I use as my primary AoE attack (and Buildup, ofc).

Siphon Life is an excellent attack for your primary chain, so should be frankenslotted for both dmg and healing. 4 Kinetic Combats and 2 Nictus work well there, for dmg, healing and S/L and Regen bonuses.

6-slotting DP is a bit of a waste. 5 slots will get you the +Rech bonus from either DW or Panacea, and will likely have you HP-capped. You don't need to chase +Healing bonuses as a /Regen. Your healing will be fine. The Panacea Proc in this power is largely a waste, but so is the straight +Heal one, so if you MUST use Panacea here, either is fine. DW gives you close to the same bonuses at a fraction of the cost, so long as you aren't violating the rule of 5 with +Rech.

If you go Spiritual Alpha, and load up on LotG +Global Rech and other +Rech set bonuses, Hasten can be perma with just 2 slots (one boosted to +5). You can hang on to 3 for exemplaring purposes, but it is a nice way to gain an extra slot somewhere else.

The Winter's Gift is SS should be the Slow Resist one, not the movement speed one. 20% Recharge Slow resist is great for /Regen.

Integration may be overslotted. Not that DW is bad there, but you can get more utility with a couple of Numina's in there and 2-3 slots somewhere else. This is a matter of preference, IMO.

Use one of the extra slots we've found to add a 4th to Resilience and put 4 Reactive Armors in there to max its +resist and add S/L Def. If you can find 2 more slots, also put the Steadfast +Def and Gladiator's Armor +Def in this power. The GA is expensive, but combined with Steadfast is a +6% to all Def, which is pretty huge. To be clear, yes, I am saying to 6-slot Resilience.

Do the same thing for Tough - 4-slot reactive armor if you can.

Midnight Grasp is your primary attack power. Slotting it for Immob is not advisable. 6-slot this for a dmg set plus a Proc. If you aren't going to split up Scrapper's Strike, use 5 of them here with a Hecatomb Proc.

I assume you are 4-slotting Revive for set bonuses. Don't. Take these 3 slots, move them to Boxing, and mule a Kinetic Combat set there for +S/L Def. You will be MUCH better off.

You don't need Physical Perfection at all, and you certainly don't need to 6-slot it. Move whatever end-mods you have to Stamina and re-invest the others elsewhere.

You don't get much from enhancing Moment of Glory's Defense. 2 slot this with a LotG +Global Rech and +Recharge. Move the rest of these slots to Weave and use LotG's there. You could also find a spot in Weave for the Shield Wall +3% Res IO, which is a nice piece for layered mitigation.

I am assuming you are Blue-side, but consider switching to Red, at least temporarily, to open up the Soul Mastery Patron Pool for Shadow Meld. It is one of the best pool powers out there to combine with /Regen, and the Ranged blast there provides a perfect compliment for DM.

That is plenty to get you started. Take a look at the other thread. My current build is posted towards the end of that page - It has great S/L Def, very good Resists, all the +Rech you need for perma-DP and Hasten, and high base regen to boot.

Thank you VERY much for your response. Now I both have a good place to research, and an excellent starting point. I'll admit that Alphas didn't exist the last time I played this guy. Heck, Physical perfection didn't exist when I last played this guy. I'm going to write up a revised build based on your advice, for further critique, before I respec and get started. I might actually try out the villain side for a bit to open up Soul Mastery.

Looks really good.

I might be tempted to make a few minor changes, but whether you do or not, you'll be very happy with how this alt is shaping up.

I'd slot Revive a tad differently. No need for end reduction on a power that doesn't cost end to use. And I'd take the much cheaper DW Heal/Recharge over the Panacea.

Shifted some slots around, mostly borrowed from burnout. As you had it it's up every 8 and a 1/2 minutes. With one slot, it's ten minutes. Since it's not somethign you'll be relying on every fight, or even every 3rd fight, I figured the extra 90 secs isn't a big deal. The extra slots bought ya some more defense.

I figured you weren't bad off on end, and not sure how effective Dark Consumption is as an attack, so I swapped it for Confront. The perfect zinger set gets more global recharge, and 3.13 more S/L def. And now you don't have to chase every runner.

Took out the Dam/End Multistrike from Shadow Maul and made it the 6th Oblit in Soul Drain. Shadow Maul is still practically at the ED Damage cap, but costs a bit more end (which you can afford). You lose .94 s/l Def that way, but pick up 1.88 s/l def from the 6th Oblit in Soul Drain,and now can add some proc damage to that. Net gain of .94 s/l def and some proccing goodness.

Used a Hami or 2 in a few places. I felt it was a tiny bit better. That's debatable, but...

All in all, tried to keep what you had basically, but just eek a bit more s/l def and recharge.

Based on that advice I've altered things slightly to reclaim those two slots from Burnout and shift them around places that might be more useful.

I can't convince myself that removing Dark Consumption is a good idea, and I think that's because right now I'm level 50 and still having Endurance Issues.

Here's my current revision. As before, please critique it and offer any suggestions you may come up with.

Well, in that case, by all means don't lose it. I suggested it because it looked like you should be golden, end wise. That said, in your originally posted build, you had nothing in Stamina. Even just dropping a lvl 50 gen IO would help. I think statistically over time a Perf Shifter +End proc is slightly better, but of course, less reliable.

But, that's why I always strongly advocate actually playing some of these theoretical builds,a and not relying on Mid's solely. YOu'[re there, and I'm not. I looks like an easily removed power, and Confront gets ya an easy big chunk of Def to s/l and global recharge, but if in practice you need the end, then of course, keep it (unless you plan to never exempt, then you might consider using Incarnate stuff [assuming you're VIP] to fix the end issue).

I'm on my work laptop atm, meaning no Mid's so I'll look at the actual build and comment on it later. But I wanted to let ya know that if you know your alt, and know you have problem X, or don't have problem Y, don't try to convince yourself, or let others convince you to change things. You probably know your situation, play-style, and character best (assuming it's not a pure hypothetical build). In that case, listen to advice, evaluate it, and discard what isn't applicable. What I love about CoH is the extreme numbers of ways you can approach a situation. I can pretty much assure you nobody has tried all of them. So you may know best. Others probably have some insight, but take it for what it's worth.

That said, if your budget is stupid huge, with the availability of multiple builds, you can always try things both ways, if you find you really are torn between X and Y.

So, may post again after I get to actually start enjoying the weekend...

Drop Shadow Maul - it sucks as a primary attack (narrow cone and long, rooted animation). You can use that power slot, and the 5 slots left in it, to get Dark Consumption back, if you are having END issues.

If you can find a slot or two for something in Stamina and a few procs in Healths, too (Regenerative Tissue, Miracle, etc).

I can see where you're going with this idea, but what would my attack chain actually BE at that point? Smite, Siphon Life, Midnight's Grasp, Dark Blast? Maybe Boxing in there somewhere?

I would swap the slotting in Soul Drain and Dark Consumption if it was me personally...Soul Drain is up more often, and frankly hits a wee bit harder...plus, IIRC it costs more endurance and Armageddon has more end redux in it.

Attack chain would look something like MG->Smite->SL->Smite and you could throw in a dark blast in there somewhere...and a Soul Drain/Dark Consumption each time they come up...Also, I see the 6th slot in Apoc set...and I understand why you did it, but...the 5% defense to psi isn't worth it

put 5 armageddon's in Soul Drain and 5 or 6 oblits in Dark Consumption...if you don't need the 6th oblit put a single generic end mod IO in it just so you get a little boost here and there in case you need it.

Based on these suggestions, I've made this alteration, removing the Damage/Endurance from Dark Blast and placing a regular End-Mod IO in Dark Consumption instead.

That leaves the build looking like this. Once again, Suggestions, Critiques, I've only got ten or so respec tokens on this guy, so I don't want to do this too many times.

I would swap the damage only apoc piece for damage/end...since it is the only end mod in the set...and you will still be right at the ED cap for everything anyway...other than that looks good.
