New Power Sets

Yes, this is an old idea and forgive me if there's a topic already (couldn't find one) but...


As much as I love the new power sets that have come out is there a way that new power sets could NOT have some "mechanic" in it?

I love StJ, Staff Fighting, (and soon) Water Blast (and in the future Nature Affinity) but...I wouldn't mind a power set every now and then that just works and no wondering about a mechanic to maximize the potential of an attack.

Although a part of me wonders if the devs do put the stacking mechanic in the new power sets on purpose or not...*shrugs*

I kind of agree. I like the new sets, I really do. But I'd also love a normal, non-gimmicky set if the Devs would release one. I mean, it's not like we don't have holes in concepts that don't necessarily need a gimmick.

Energy Shards: Energy/Lethal damage with a chance to stun

Earth Buff/Debuff

Psychic Buff/Debuff

Some sort of Smashing/Cold set

Gadget Control


Things like this can be put in for concept only, and while they'd need to function well enough, they don't need a gimmick. People would likely play them for concept.


Then there are other sets where I'd feel you'd need some sort of gimmick, like Radiation Melee, because -Def just isn't enough of a secondary effect. Or Mastermind Primaries, since they all have one power in the set that is pure gimmick that sets them apart somewhat.


But yes, a simple, non-gimmick set would be fine with me.

Holes in the Powersets that could be filled in:

  • Some kind of Tool/Gadget based Control Set.
  • Some kind of Electrical based Support (Buff/Debuff) set.
  • An Energy Based Support set, (An argument could be made for Kinetics, though...) and Control set (No, I don't consider Gravity an 'Energy Control' set.)
  • Radiation is open for a Melee, Defense, and a Control Set. (Yes, I know Radiation Armor is in the works.)
  • Psychic powers could use a Melee (yes, I know, it's coming,) Defnese, and Support set. (Again, an argument could be made for Empathy/Pain BEING the Psychic Support sets.)


Getting into the real exotic stuff...
  • Sonics are open for a Melee, Defense, and Control set.
  • Poison/Toxic is open for everything but support (Okay, Spines might qualify for melee... but not really.)
  • Wind/Storms, like Poison/Toxic, only has a Support set currently.
  • Water will soon have a Ranged set... leaving us open for a Melee, Defense, Support, and a Control set.

That's a pretty large list of potential power sets right there, and it doesn't even include some of the Player-desired sets (like, say, Thrown Weapons) or the one-AT only sets.

Im still waiting for the Ancillary Powers to get some updates from all the new powers we've received over the past few years, IE Archery, Sonic, Psi, etc...

Dark Control.

I wouldn't be surprised if new Control sets never get gimmicks shoehorned in... If they ever make another one. There were 18 months between Electric and Dark Control, when only three sets were released between them (Time Manipulation, Beam Rifle and Street Justice) compared to the seven sets and possible ATs post-Dark Control (Beast Mastery, Staff Fighting, Water Blast, Bio Armour, Nature Affinity, Radiation Armour, Psi Melee, etc).

So, from that list, you'll have a very long wait before something non-gimmicky comes along because, maybe aside from the two Defence sets, they all have some sort of point-based or combo mechanic.

True I forgot about Dark Control....

Since I like melee quite a bit I just see every new set with some mechanic in it and then I see it for Water Blast (as well as a support set in Nature Affinity) and just get tired or "worried" about every new set having some stacking mechanic that is the "new shiny" to use for everything (like the 4 legged rig being used for "everything", etc...).
