GeForce 670?

DeepSkyBlue

Hi, everybody,

I have the chance to invest some money into my machine. Would you say the GeForce GTX 670 is worth its price (not just for CoH, but in general)?

Thanks for your time!

Not enough info. Sticking a GF 670 into a P4 prescott based system won't do much.

If you're going for broke (and can still afford to eat afterwards), then sure, but you'd be fine with a 550ti according to the recomendations made for my tenative build.

EDIT: To point out that it was the 560ti, not the 550ti I was pointed to.

My machine is a Core i7 950 running at 3GHz, with 8GB on a Gigabyte
X58-USB3 mainboard. Currently I'm using a GeForce GTX 460. Anything else you need to know?

So, if I understand you correctly, the card is good but has a bad price-performance-ratio?

460 > 550 ti

550 ti is a good choice if you are limited by PSU and case size. Better cards exist for just $10 more than the average price of a 550 ti.

670 is fine then DeepskyBlue. I just wanted to make sure your CPU was worthy of a 670, there are people out there that do crazy stuff.

In the super-high-performance category, the 670 is the best bang for the buck right now.

Your 970 should run it just fine.

Grrr, I hate it when I load a new page on top of a reply ...

The GTX 670 is a great card if you can swallow the $400 price tag. It's 90-95% the performance of a GTX 680 for 80% of the price, uses 25 watts less power and in your case only uses 10 watts more power than the GTX 460.

As NewChem points out, the GTX 550Ti is inferior to the GTX 460. A original stock clock (675MHz) GTX 460 1GB/256-bit is 20% faster than the 550Ti. A GTX 670 is about 3 times faster than the GTX 550Ti.

Yes you don't have the latest and greatest CPU to feed it and will only have it plugged into a PCIe 2.0 slot (which only costs you under 5% compared to a PCIe 3.0 slot) but the GTX 670 will be a card you can keep whenever you decide to upgrade the motherboard/CPU.

I've been running a GTX 580 (with a computer built to support it) for almost a year and it's still pretty much overkill for CoH. I have all the ultra settings maxed out and I've noticed no significant lags or slow-downs.

Frankly I would expect a GTX 670 to be totally over-powered for this game. As wonderful as this game is it's simply not graphically-complex enough to make a card like that even break a sweat. Remember for all its improvements CoH is basically a 10-year old game at this point - it's not bleeding edge by any stretch.

If you're looking for a GPU that'll be capable of running -anything- for the next couple of years then spending the money on a GTX 670 might make sense. But if its just for CoH it might be far more GPU horsepower than you really need.
