I am thinking about updating my video card but I want to stay around $100. I currently have a Nvidia Geforce GT 240 and I am thinking about going to the GT 440. Is there a big enough difference between these two cards to warrant a change? Any Suggestions?

My specs are:

AMD PHENOM II X4 965 3.4 GHZ BLACK ED
4 GB DDR3 PC3 PC1333
EVGA NVIDIA GT 240 1 GB PCI-E 16X
ASUS M4A77TD AM3 DDR3 AMD 770 AMD
AZZA CYBERPOWER 600 WATT POWER SUPPLY
320GB SATA II 3GB 16MB 7200RPM HD
Windows 7 64 bit

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks, what level of video card would I need to start seeing significant changes?

The next generation cards have been out for a few months. AMD 7xxx series and Nvidia 6xx series. However, there are good bargains for AMD 6xxx series and Nvidia 5xx series

Here you go

AMD
6770 its somewhat old, its a rebadge of the 5770.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150560
$80 AR

The 6850 is a much beefier card and based on the 68xx Barts core.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150573
$135 AR

Nvidia
560 SE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130770
$130

There is a 550Ti but its only $10 less than the 560 SE so not enough bang for the buck.

560
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130664
$170

If you want to get the most performance under $100 get the 6770, If you want the best deal get the 560 SE or 6850.

Concur. nVidia doesn't cater as much as they use to in the low to low-mid end performance cards with their newer GPU lines. The latest word is that they are rebadging their GT 520 and GT 440 as the "new" GT 610 and GT 630 line instead of fabricating a new low end GPU based on the tech in the GPU that powers the GTX 680 (and 670 and maybe a 660).

Are PCI-E 3.0 backwards compatible with 2.0 motherboards?

I would also make sure you got Window 7 64bit and upgrade your ram to at least 4GB.

I do have both 4 GB of ram and 64 bit Win7. I also bought 8 gb more of ram which I should have by Wednesday.

Yes. However there aren't a lot of cards that are currently PCI-E 3.0 and none that I know of off hand in your price range.

I just recently picked up a GT520 it was only 50 bucks! wasn't much of an improvement from my old card but it did have a fan as opposed to the AMD i was running with only a heat sink... any whose.. I can say that the drivers it runs list as GT6xx so i would say latest 'word' is true

Not really a good choice unless you are PSU limited.

I don't know what your old card is, but the GT520 is an AWFUL card for gaming. Its performance level is about par with a card like a 6600GT from like oh 8 years ago.

Check out the charts here and here for comparing performance between the HD 7750 and HD 5770/6770.

Since the prices are about the same I would choose the older HD 5770/6770 over the newer HD 7750.

The 7750 is a lower end UM capable card that does not require a PCI-E supplement power. Its not a bad card, just slightly overpriced vs. its older siblings which offer more performance for less money.

These transition periods are actually the few times were buying certain old generation computer parts can be a bargain, if you do some shopping/comparing.

Edit: the 7750 has to use the newer AMD/ATI drivers vs the 5xxx/6xxx series, that may or may not be a problem for some folks. Some of the older drivers are "more stable" and the 7xxx series must use new drivers. YMMV.
