Video card advice

Currently I have a PNY Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 1gb card. The fan on it is going south. Last night just standing in Dark Astoria crafting an Alpha slot I watch the temp on my card go from 71C to 99C. Last week I had my video dropping (monitor showing no connection but computer still on) shortly after booting and running solitaire. o.O

So, a new video on an older system (please note much is from memory as I'm posting away from my desktop. Will update if incorrect after I get home)
Motherboard: Asus M2N-E with AMD Athalon 64x2 Dual Core 5600+
3GB Ram
80GB WDHD internal, 1TB external partitioned
450W power supply
3 cooling fans, RAIDMAX Ares case ATX mid tower
Windows XP
PNY NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0

This is a home built system that's about 5 years old. I can't afford a new system yet, so I'm looking at options. So far I have:

Completely replace system (no funds for this)
Replace video card (looked at EVGA GeForce GTX 560 1GB 256-bit from Newegg) and power supply (up to a 500W)
VGA Cooler as a temporary fix

I'm looking for advice. The Cooler would be a lot cheaper for now, but I'm not sure if doing this is an adequate substitute. The new video card and power supply will take an ugly chunk out of my budget, but can be used in any new machine I get at a later date. I've scoured the forums here trying to find a solution, hoping to still be able to run Ultra on City. I am not a total techie, but have built my own systems the past two times I've upgraded.

Thoughts or advice? Is there a solution I'm not seeing?

If you don't mind a slightly older card the AMD 6770 is about $105 and plays UM. It should be fine with the same PSU supplying the 9800GT

If you can get the Nvidia 560 for $150 that's not bad. There is a 560 SE (sucky edition) for $129 so make sure its just a 560 not its not an SE. Either of those should be ok if you are already using a 9800 GT with your existing PSU (assuming of course you have a good PSU and please don't quote wattage. Companies lie about it and there is a big difference between Cheaptech 500W vs say Seasonic 500W)

Hmm. I'll have to see what kind of PSU I actually have. I think it's the one that came with the case. I'mf fine with older cards so long as they're compatible with the PCI-E 1.0 x16 slot.

Even if you went with a more powerful video card, your biggest bottleneck with CoH anyways is the CPU. Given that's an AM2+/AM2 MB. That's why I am suggesting a decent "low" cost GPU that's maybe a little old until you can get more funds for a better rig.

Put a new fan/cooler on it. Save the money for the rig you want, not a patch you don't really need if it's just a fan/cooler issue.

I suggest this:

http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/Pr...ad.asp?idx=340

It's cheap enough, and will get you through the rough patch. Provided, of course, the video card isn't already shot from overheating. But this is the path I'd be taking.

Well tonight the temp reached 107C. I'm calling it fried now. I don't think the fan is working at all.

Pancake!

With blueberries!

:-(

Thanks for the feedback. Going to research that link, houtex, thanks!
