Need Assistance PVE Sonic/Devices
The Goals: I want to be able to solo content at 0/x2 with bosses, x3 if i am feeling frisky. Definitely want to be able to solo the new DA missions at the same difficulty. This is not to say i do not want to team ever. but i am counting on my ghosting abilities and debuffs in my attacks to help me contribute. I do not have Inf falling out of my pockets so have to rely on merits and rewards for the more expensive IOs
|
The Questions: Firstly,Taser.. i really like this power but can not think of a way to take it early.. and i am wondering does this stack with screech to stun bosses both screech and taser are mag 3 stuns. If they do stack would dropping caltrops in favor of Taser be advisable? |
Drop caltrops in front of you so that the boss can't get into melee range with you. Screech > Taser. The boss is neutralized and you are free to either AoE the remainder of the spawn and take the boss out later or take the boss out now while you ignore the rest of the spawn.
Secondly Epic powers..i chose mace for the defense shield.. but really? the rest of the powers from that pool are just bleh maybe i am missing something ( ok mace volley adds another cone and spiderlings are cute!) is there a suggested epic that would give me the same surviveablity? no not Ice yuk i have that on my main and wow i hate it so much if i wasn't a SG leader i would side switch in a heart beat! |
I am not sure where to place a stealth IO since you only get one should it go in sprint or hover.. and will Ninja run + Sprint+ Stealth IO be as good with CD as using SS? ok i am rambling Mostly i am hoping on some feed back on this build i made it with defense in mind added hover for times i want to hover blast seemed like a way to go. Thank you all in advance. |
Play style choices - If you are planning on using Sirens and Trip Mine/Time Bomb then Gun Drone will not be that helpful as it will wake up sleeping mobs and nullify your stealth advantage.
My personal recommendations for this combination would be this:
Open with Smoke to reduce enemy perception range. This will be important to help control the Alpha response.
Next move closer to the spawn (but not too close) so that all targets are within the cone of Sirens.
Now drop Caltrops either where you are standing or BEHIND you. The goal here is to have the patch as close to the spawn as possible without alerting the spawn by causing any damage ticks. (You can also drop a safety mine if you like)
Note - when facing a spawn without a Boss you can skip the caltrop step.
Next use Sirens to put the spawn (except for the boss) to sleep. Mobs that are missed (including Bosses) will open with their ranged Alpha attack.
Take a step or 2 back to keep caltrops between you and the still fully awake Boss and any awake mobs.
Screech the Boss.
Taser the Boss.
Now you can Webnade the Boss and Web Envelope the Boss and a good portion of the spawn. Web Grenade and Web Envelope do no damage and thus will not wake the spawn.
At this point the spawn is pretty much neutered/neutralized and its up to you to decide how to pick it apart. Single target attacks on the Boss to take him down right away is a good idea (it depends really on how many other Mobs aren't asleep).
If the entire spawn is sleeping I'll move in and drop Time Bomb in their midst. Then go back and continue working on the boss. When the light on the Time Bomb starts blinking faster I'll > Amplify > Howl so that the entire spawn is resistance debuffed just before the time bomb goes off.

Most likely not a common choice for blasters but i really enjoy her. I tried other forms of sonic/ and /sonic and really just preferred a blaster.. devices is something i have not tried yet and the two seemed to have a synergy. So i have spent some time reading over the forums.. surprisingly i found that many people mention sonic/dev.. but other than a few very very old posts ( ones that still have inherent fitness) there is not much to go on. |

ok i am rambling
Mostly i am hoping on some feed back on this build i made it with defense in mind added hover for times i want to hover blast seemed like a way to go. |
On teams, I utilize my AoE immobilize and my 2 cones to add to the AoE carnage. My secondary is virtually ignored on teams.
Oh, I also have Aid Self, just in case.
It's an excellent, and highly underrated combo. Mine is almost pure hoverblaster, but you can make it work from ground level as well, you just don't have as many safety nets in case something goes wrong (like when Siren's misses a bunch of them, or you don't notice a second boss)

It is very likely I was one of the people who mentioned it. I'll try to help you here. |
Thank you both for the replies and best of all the strategies i am still a little torn on rather to stay on the ground or hover...how ever your tips gave me a little more insight so i sent my BF out of the house so i could create another build which i will post in a moment.
I took taser early put off caltrops till 30, removed gun drone ( have to admit I only took it because well its a floating gun turret, that's kinda cool!) with the slots from there and a few other places I was able to beef up my defense as well as give smoke ( which knight convinced me to take ) and taser a few slots which i frankenslotted.
I took maneuvers knowing blasters do not get as good a numbers from it as fenders but meh oh well, though i'm still half thinking i could drop it and move things around to still take hover.
i -really- wrestled rather to take the medicine pool or not still debating it to be honest, maybe i can deal with lower defense in favor of healing?
Feel free to critique it, while i am not a huge min/maxer i do like to enjoy playing my characters and part of that enjoyment is this!

The things that jump out at me are:
1) Dreadful Wail - yeah its a fun power but if you are really relying on, Targeting Drone, Combat Jumping, Tough, Weave, Scorpion Shield, and Maneuvers, then the last thing you'll want to do is crash your endurance with DW.
On the bright side you can substitute Time Bomb with out changing your defense numbers or enhancement slotting or you can take a different power entirely and just rely on Judgement as your nuke when you get it.
2) Caltrops slotted with the Ragnarok proc will conflict with Web Envelope. You would be better off with just a rech IO in Caltrops or an End/Rech/Slow from one of the slow sets.
3) Save yourself an enhancement slot. Move the Celerity Stealth to Sprint and put a Zephyr -KB in Super Speed instead. That will free up the slot in Combat Jumping that currently holds the Karma -KB.

With respect to caltrops (from a caltrops fan) I would drop in a range IO if I was going to go with just the base slot. I like to be able to throw them beyond just off the end of my toes even if its just a few feet further.

Might just throw gun drone back in there to have against EBs (AVs and GMs on teams) and/or a set mule for a bit more ranged defense. got a bit of time to think on that still.
One thing i did change was i ditched maneuvers and picked up hover. a loss of .3% defense which i think we can agree is worth it for the increased safety and mobility of hover.
Lastly Some good news thanks to my BF's addiction to super packs i have nearly a full set of Blaster's wrath... which i am thinking will go into Howl.. not really happy with Posi's there anyway.
Thank you all very much for the help. this combo is a real blast to play! Not to mention this help has given me insight for future blaster builds.
On my energy/devices I love having 2 gun drones and 3 spiderlings out at the same time. The drones are very strong but do drain a lot of endurance.
I used expedient reinforcement and blood mandate IO sets for ranged defense. The pets may not be the best investment, but its a lot of fun. Might mess with sleep controls though.
((you can add 2 blessing of the zephyr to hover to get more speed out of it and pick up some more ranged defense, un-slotted it is terrible slow))
I'm not going to talk about sonic/dev specifically, because /dev does not work with my playstyle. I'm going to talk about the things I always talk about: the Defense softcap and the market.
I do not have Inf falling out of my pockets so have to rely on merits and rewards for the more expensive IOs |
Another way of softening the blow of buying enhancements is to see what the cost for crafting recipes is[1] , and compare to the cost of crafted. Then buy two recipes, craft both, sell one [2]. (Aka: marketing for people who only MOSTLY hate to market.)
So with a little work, doing the sorts of things you would normally do [ie play] you can have a few hundred million inf, enough for quite a respectable build.
As far as the defense softcap: Dechs Kaison explains it all to you. If I had to try the TL;DR version (not my strong suit): Going from 0% to 35% Defense means you live three times as long. Going from 35% to 45% Defense means you live an ADDITIONAL three times as long, or ten times as long as 0%.
[1] Don't forget cost of crafting and cost of salvage!
[2] There are three main "gotchas" in using the market. One is "not leaving your bids up overnight"- if you pay to BUY IT NAO you could have paid less. One is "listing at the sale price"- lowest bid gets the sale, so if the last 5 sold for 50 million they're probably actually LISTED at something like 45,000,001 . If you list at 50 million won't sell until your competition runs out of stock. And the last one is, "Sometimes the price on something collapses for no predictable reason and stays that way, possibly for months or years." Never bet more than you can afford to lose.
Mini-guides: Force Field Defenders, Blasters, Market Self-Defense, Frankenslotting.
So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
My Energy/Devices was easier to soft-cap defense vs S/L/E/R than my DP/Mental. /Devices sets get lots of exotic slotting choices. 45% was surprisingly easy and inexpensive to get. My problem was more about picking which powers and sets most supported the playstyle to which I wished to become accustomed.
I wanted to blast indiscriminately at anything that moved and not care if it tried to hit me back. And I can. That is a nice feeling. It took me 8 years. Hope you get there sooner.

One thing i have noticed is it seems i miss a lot with sonic attacks maybe it's my imagination because i REALLY am wanting them to hit!
Fulmens, thank you for the market advice i fall into the (Aka "marketing for people who hate to market." ) category. I am very stingy with my hero merits using them to purchase things like reactive armor sets and the like. it never occurred to me to use a replenishment resource like hero merits! again thank you.

ok i am rambling
Mostly i am hoping on some feed back on this build i made it with defense in mind added hover for times i want to hover blast seemed like a way to go.
