Rebuilding A Disused Bots/Traps - Guidance, Please

So, roaming through the vast jungle of old and new characters on my account, I bumped into this old friend and wondered, "Why aren't I playing him more?" Turns out, the answer is he needs an update and I'm not sure what to do. He has Legacy Fitness, so that's an easy fix, but what now?

The more I look at this, the more I'm thinking that the answer hinges on how effective Poison Trap is. Particularly at his current level. Is it worth the slot-investment? Your comments are welcome.

Fireheart:

Dechs Kaison has posted his bots/traps build on his blog here.

There are a few more ___/traps build threads floating about, almost always bots or thugs. I think Plainguy has his "standard" /traps approach (also softcapping positions) out there as well within the last year or so.

Enjoy!

Um, great! How about translating that into SOs and level 30? The tweaks that a maxed-out build can do, do not really help me. That's one reason why I posted my existing build.

I've had good talks with Dechs about Dark Armor and stuff. I've read his guides. I've read the other guides too, as well as surveying the forum for build advice. I don't want to be a jerk about it, but instead of telling me what works at 50+, why not give me some advice I can use?

Traps is all about the recharge. Hasten is mandatory. Building for defense should be easy and a priority for this combo.

To answer your question, yes Poison Trap is fantastic and is a key power in the set.

Your initial post didn't include those limitations (which are fairly substantial), and I'm not seeing how anyone could have guessed you wanted an SO-only build for level 30.

Why are you seeking an SO-only build? Is it for when you don't maintain a subscription? And when you specify SO-only, are you also eliminating the ATO set?

With these limitations, don't you think we need more information? Like - what content do you intend to be running? Because if you're just doing basic missions at standard difficulty solo, it frankly doesn't matter how you slot with a bots/traps past what you already have. I would even guess that you could get away with no-slots for this combo on standard difficulty.

In the end, I don't know if anyone is going to be able to add better information than JayboH has already provided. There's only so much you can do build-wise with SOs... Make sure you have sufficient accuracy on all your powers that need it, defense in the powers that take it, and recharge for everything else.

PS And skip the attacks! (or not, if you happen to like them)

I read about SO only builds. The value of level 30 generic IOs is pretty good until you want to max out a fifty.

As stated it's all about the recharge. Acid mortar, poison gas trap, seeker drones - the only decision is where to place them, not usually when.

Personally, I don't like how you slotted protector bots. First, slotting healing means they heal bigger numbers, but part of the AI is they will WAIT to heal bigger numbers which also means your other minions can be knocked out by burst damage. Your protector bots will do a big chunk of damage. I cannot imagine having less than 60% damage enhancement in there. More damage means killing faster and less incoming shots to defend. After level 32, you will also want some endurance reduction in the protector bots. This reason explains some of the level 30ish IO frankenslotting that goes on with acc/dmg/end and acc/dmg in low level mastermind pets.

I also suggest taking leadership. For the most part the primary buffs of assault, tactics, maneuvers are lackluster. The +perception and confuse protection are very worthwhile.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.

Hmm, okay, I see that the build data in the original post says he's level 49, which is quite untrue, he's only up to L30. I'm looking for a basic build with SOs, because that is what I have and what I can afford, and IOs (unless Frankenslotted) don't quite compete at this level. At level 32, yes, then I'll switch over to an IO build.

I thought the limitations were implied by the build, but I can see that was unclear. I apologize for the confusion.

What the SOs do, is tell you what is important. For instance, in Storm - Freezing Rain, Recharge is paramount, since buffing accuracy or damage is a waste. It took me a while to understand that, and it was another forumite that pointed it out and explained the details.

My particular concern is this:
Level 24: [Empty] -- Empty(A)
Level 26: Assault Bot -- Acc(A), Acc(27), Dmg(27), Dmg(29), Dmg(29)
Level 28: [Empty] -- Empty(A)
Level 30: [Empty] -- Empty(A)

What powers do I fit into those empty spots?

Because that's kinda important at this level. Later, when I'm in my 40s and 50s, then slotting and enhancing become important. That's when the precise balance of bonuses and such becomes significant. Right now, I'm trying to get the important powers in place, so I can gain experience in using them.

---
Psylenz : Okay, so don't expect the Protectors to be heal-bots, but give them more damage, got it. Build for recharge for the Traps (eventually). Leadership would be good. Got it.

Nyghtmaire : I'm VIP, have been around for years, and expect to continue as VIP, unless the Devs finally succeed in breaking the game. My playstyle with this character is to lead my bots into battle and try to be a good teammate to them.

So far, my main powers are fire-and-forget, so I'm using my blaster-rifle to initiate battles and clean up the mess left by bots that shoot things at random. Standing still, doing nothing but wait for powers to recharge drives me nuts, but I recognize that I'll need to do that more, when I get higher level. By then, I'll have more significant powers to worry about, so I'll phase the rifle out.

As for content, I'm playing the game, PvE, level 30 missions at +1x3, mostly. I solo a bit, but join teams when I can. Doing Tips to go Rogue.

So it's all 'normal'.

Be Well!

What I could do, is craft what I have on my Thugs/Traps in Mids and post that, since Thugs and Robots can basically be slotted identically.

I like the medicine pool, you've got enough defence that interrupts shouldn't be a problem.

I consider hasten mandatory.

Take seeker drones at lvl 28, they're a 100% safe alpha-strike soaker. Slot 'em for recharge.

What's your playstyle?

1) Summon seekers into the edge of the crowd.
2) While mobs are distracted run into the middle of the crowd and drop PGT.
3) Now mobs are distracted and choking, drop acid mortar.
4) By this time your pets will be attacking and the fight is mostly over. Spam caltops and later on tripmine.

You should be able to run +0x5 with this style, and won't be lvl 30 for long.
