Hi, SO i'm coming back to City of X after a break after a friend of mine wanted to play it as a claws/willpower (or super relfex) brute. I was going to play a Plant/thorn Dom but now we have the darkness powers which i'm interested in, so i'm wondering what you'd suggest.

Which would be a better combo, Plant/thorn, plant/dark, dark/thron or dark/dark?

Plant/ is just good. There are better options than /thorn. You might want to consider plant/dark. Thats a pretty good combo. Lead with seeds, walk in and pbaoe/melee everything to death. Dark/dark is pretty generally good.

My Plant/Dark just hit 42 yesterday, and is absolutely *beast*. I haven't rolled Dark Control yet, but I took Plant/Thorns to 50 and ended up deleting it. Plant/Dark is *so* much better than Plant/Thorn that it's not even funny.

Not sure if I'm just out-dated, but plant/thorn was one of my fav. combos. It works really good for concept (especially since you can change thorns to look however you want). Also, it has good fast AoE which is important to get all the exp you can before everything murders each other. Seeds of confusion causes enemies to bunch up so I regularly get 2-3 in my ripper. Also the -def makes leveling easier and it causes the enemies to hit each other more vs. the -tohit in dark that makes people hit less. The aoe in dark is terrible and slow DoT. The damage is higher in /thorns also. If none of that convinces you, then I should add that you get to do a backflip at 38.

Heh, Azucar basically has the reason why I played Thorns down to a T. Although the -tohit and confusion don't seem like a good combo do they, but everyone else is saying it is pretty good... why exactly is that? Is there some sort of secret to it or something?

Please share your mystic wisdom as to why the combo of plants and darkness is good, oh wise forum goers. or as to why it is not good and that I should use something totally different.

Are you playing the same Dark Assault I'm playing?

Yes, Nightfall is a narrow cone with a slightly slow DoT. I'll admit it's not a particularly great power. Englufing Darkness, on the other hand, is an amazing AoE.

Let's compare....

Thorn Burst: http://tomax.cohtitan.com/data/power...lt.Thorn_Burst
74.158 Damage, 3 Second cast time = 24.719 DPA, on a 17 second recharge

Engulfing Darkness: http://tomax.cohtitan.com/data/power...sault.Moonbeam
77.078 Damage, 2 Second cast time = 38.539 DPA, on an 18 second recharge.

Other than those numbers and damage types, the two powers are identical - both do front-loaded damage followed by a DoT in a 15ft PBAoE. The recharge difference really isn't that noticeable, but the difference in cast time and DPA is HUGE. Englufing Darkness compares favorably to every Dominator PBAoE currently in existence.

Now, I will admit that Thorns gets a better cone, as well as third AoE attack in Ripper. Dark Assault on the other hand, gets a better pair of melee attacks (Smite and Midnight Grasp are killer), Gloom (which is so good Brutes ditch attacks from their primary to take it as an epic power), and Life Drain (which is a very impressive survivability boost).

Plant/Dark does perhaps lose a little synergy from the -to-hit lowering confused enemies' damage output against eachother. That said, Plant has such amazing control and bonus damage from Creepers anyway, and the -to-hit isn't that big on Dark Assault (Darkness Control has much bigger -to-hit numbers in Fearsome Stare and Shadow Field). Plant/Dark may not be "OMG TEH BEST AOE EVAR", but I definitely believe it has the potential to be a fun and effective combo.

Of course, Dark/Dark is high on my recommendations list too (hell, I'm writing a guide to it! See my sig). At the end of the day, though, play what's fun for you. If that's Plant/Thorn, Plant/Dark, or Dark/Thorn, more power to ya!
