An accidental marvel

I'd never really intended to make this character. I needed to make a toon to represent me back in the days when I first started spinning for Evo on Defiant and I just needed something a bit cool with a few showy effects. I hadn't yet got a single lvl 50 (it took longer in those days of course) and I'd only got a handful of characters.

This character would be slightly different though - the look had to be cool rather than the powers and I finally opted, almost at random, for a controller, and then chose two power sets with absolutely no synergy nor logic. I didn't set out to create it that way... it kind of just happened.

But I stopped just using it to DJ and I started playing it a bit, and liking it... it was squishy as hell and not very flexible but it turned out to be a lot of fun and he levelled far more quickly than Scarlet Shocker did (less debt of course ) and had great effects and abilities to throw stuff about - so even if the graphical effects weren't there, the visuals of an NPC hurtling across a room in an aeronautical display of extreme rag doll was ultimately highly pleasing.

But pleasing as he was - Riffster often got put on a shelf whist new shinies were pursued, and admittedly spent a good two or three years languishing with an SO'd build and not much love lavished on him. But about 9 months ago he got taken out, dusted down - If memory serves, it was to do an LRSF (he'd done enough to go vigilante then) and a troller with his unique talents had been requested.

The LRSF in question worked stunningly well and the collegiate approbation struck a chord. He got a polish of a respec, some IO sets, and then the jolly old Incarnate route beckoned.

Since then, we've not looked back and he's now quite tasty even solo - he can take on most stuff I throw at him with a raised difficulty level, despite the fact he doesn't so much do DPS as DPM. His capacity to incapacitate and keep anything nasty at greater than arms reach is generally ample mitigation for those who bear him any level of emnity.

What's surprising is maybe the way he's grown into something that has become in its own way stunningly efficient. We're not talking the damage of a fire/rad/kin uberteam but there's some pretty good defence and a good mix of hard and soft control - and it's different. I don't think I've ever teamed or even seen another - so feel free to roll your own and see what you make of it.

I have a level 50 mind/storm also. It was one of my early level 50 characters. Its a fun combo.

What does "running for Evo" mean?

I have one, too. My build has a substantially different focus than yours, however. Here is my "intended" build. I'm not nearly there yet, but I think it will be a beast when finished. The 4 procs in Freezing Rain add up to decent damage. Plus it has two AoE attacks and a nearly perma-pet. Burnout means that I can always get all my powers back in an emergency.

It will be a bit tough on endurance, so Cardiac will be needed. But then, Cardiac has several other nice benefits for a Mind/Storm, since it can buff Range, resistance, Sleep and Fear.

Interesting build Local... I also have some Cardiacs made because I built them before the new lot came out... many of the Alphas offer some good troller benefits though. Currently using Vigor

I've gone villain to get the Patron sets but I was going to for Mu - for the synergy of electric with the storm - but I guess there's no synergy with this set so there's no need to go that route either.

GW might also make a nice patron set too.

I find this is a highly survivable build as it stands - so I'm possibly thinking seriously of making a second expensive build to run pets with.

Oh and spinning for Evo - there was a web radio station broadcasting into Atlas on Defiant called Evolution radio and I dj'd there for a bit before branching out into new fields musically. I still spin often but not in game these days - jazz isn't really what works for the gaming community so well ;-)

The Tarantula is actually quite good. It does some decent tanking and pretty good damage. The biggest problem I have with it is when I'm fighting Arachnos, I find it confusing. (Why can't I target that damned . . . oh, it's my pet!) What makes Mace Mastry so tempting is a very good S/L/E defense-based shield, plus some -Resistance in Poisonous Blast . . . and the pet, of course. Who says a Mind Controller has to go without pets, when you can have a spider, a tornado and a lightning cloud?
