Graphics Issues

I've noticed a few graphics issues lately running CoH (in Ultra Mode using a Radeon 6870). Up until recently I'd been away for a few months, but when I came back I noticed the game seems to lag quite a bit; at least when I first enter, but occasionally it can go on throughout my time in-game. This is new as even back on my old laptop I don't think I've ever had any real issues with lag. Until a couple days ago, the drivers in my video card was from maybe around May-ish of this year. I since upgraded to the 11.10 drivers from AMD due to a map loading issue I encountered in the last SSA. That seemed to solve that issue, though I can't be 100% sure that really was the fix or if just restarting the game fixed it. Even after the driver update, I'm still getting that lag issue. It's especially noticeable in newer zones, or revamped zones (like Atlas).

Another problem I noticed was while running a mission in the sewers on a new character, the water in some areas was blue until I got closer to it. Not sure if that's a problem on my end, or a glitch with the game.

I guess what I'm trying to do here, is 1) see if I was the only one encountering these issues, and what others did to get around them, and 2) find out what I can do to get the most out of my video card (since I know I can adjust clock speed, let the card take care of AA instead of the game, etc) while still getting the most I can out of Ultra Mode.

If y'all need any more information let me know.

I always tell people the more information we have the greater the chance we can piece together a common reason for the crashes (assuming its software related which it often is)

I don't really see anything that stands out so it might just be the fact that ATI and the game seem to be having a lot of problems in general lately.

One thing you might try is lowering your Ambient Occlusion and Occlusion Strength. Those could be messing with the complex reflections coming off of a moving reflective surface at a longer draw distance with that relatively lower resolution setting. Note, I said relatively lower. It's not a bad setting but most people are playing with monitors capable of much higher resolutions so that artifacting is not necessarily something that would be noticed by many people.

Heh...my monitor is also my TV and that's as high as it goes. But thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them when I get home. As far as performance, should I look into upping the speed on my card, let it handle AA and AF instead of the game and things of that nature, or just leave it at factory settings?

I just let the game handle it myself. The problem is that opengl is much more stressful on video cards than directx. With that in mind I've chosen not to push my card through that extra bit of stress.

But if you check your card's temperature in game and it's well within the safety zone then you can give it a try. There is really no sure way of knowing how it will affect performance until you do try.

I tried your suggestions Mandu and a couple other things. They seemed to have helped a little, though the game still lags a bit when I first enter a zone. It seems like most of the games I play don't like ATI cards or drivers.

Appreciate the help though.
