For Secondaries, Willpower, Fiery Aura, or Energy Aura. Both WP and EA are top end performing sets when IOed to the gills, and both function really well on just SO's. FA will give you a lot more damage potential, but can leave you quite squishy. I'm not sure what people do in order to solo +4/x8, (I've never tried, too boring), but my guess is lots of recharge for heals and their best attacks, and then barrier destiny powers.
My personal awesomeness milestone is being able to solo in the Keyes Reactor Trial, never having to pop a green, and never dieing.
For your primary, if you like AoE, my suggestions are Fire Melee or Electric Melee. Fire Melee doesn't have as much, but it has great ST damage, and the best unresisted damage type. Spines gives up too much for its AoE in my opinion. Street Justice is also an awesome pick. Looks cool, sounds bone crunching, and a great mix of ST and high damage, quick recharging AoE's (though they're just a bit smaller on the radius).
You can change shield to the elemental electric effect and it you can barely see it is a shield (mine is colored white). Pair that with electric melee for extreme awesomeness. Not exactly what you wanted, but it is awesome enough you should try it until you find something better.
Sometimes playing sets I hate inspires me to make something I really like.
First Recommendations:
Claw/Invuln/body
Fire/willpower/body
If you're serious about the 4x8 and no shield, I think these are your best choices: I run council farm at 4x8 with either of those, no trouble, and both are also good 'all-rounders'.
Not the best damage, not the most durable, but plenty good at both.
If you are willing to be a bit more fragile in exchange for more damage:
fire/electric/soul
spines/fire/body
claw/electric/body
claw/fire/body
Those last two are quite delicate but do AMAZING damage. I have a claw/electric in the 30's and a claw/fire at 50, they are a lot of fun but a little too dainty for my hamfisted play style. 
Most important: HAVE FUN.
I recommend getting a character concept that makes you smile. You'll have fun with it, no matter what.
I am having a hard time deciding a good all around toon, tried a brute mulitple times in the last few days gotta say they dont compare to scrappers. That being said i cant choose primary/secondaries lol, read around these forums a good bit, but i know in this game anything really works.
So could yins help me out here? I know DM is very good, but I already have a DM/SR scrap, rather not make another DM. SR is fine though. Also have a Kat/Regen but i really dont like it. Also, SD and ElM are kind of turn offs for me, i know thats gonna limit choices down below.
Basically what i was thinking for the toon is:
Good in teams.
Good at soloing (+4/8 would be cool for inf/drops)
Pretty fun (I know, subjective, but your opinion on what you enjoy is great).
I know its pretty picky but after spending hours sitting at the char creation screen, I can use some help.
