BSOD on program exit

Hey all. Been having a bit of a problem for a while now. Every (or near enough not to matter) I exit CoH, I end up with a blue screen of death. This is the message on exit:

Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF807238, 0xA59AAAF4, 0x00000000)

win32k.sys Address Before BF80728 base at BF800000 Datestamp 4de797d3

It happens on no other program than CoH. Everything else runs just fine. Thoughts?

I did some looking on the 'net, and found these things to help you out.

How to fix win32k.sys BSODs.

And STOP 0x0000008E Blue Screen Errors. (Make sure to click through to the guide [it will take a few clicks to get to the specific STOP error].)

The "short answer" is to run Windows Update, and make sure everything is good there.

Double check that your video drivers are up to date and good. (Might need to uninstall them, sweep your drivers, and reinstall.)

If neither of those work, and you have the install disks for your OS, try "sfc /scannow" in a command prompt. (And expect it to take a long time.)

If you have done all of that, and it hasn't improved... You might have a hardware problem. I'd really recommend going through the links I posted to understand further at that point.

((I'm betting on the video drivers myself.))

Well, I'm running Catalyst 11.5, if that makes any difference.

Got a 6 hour dl for that debugger mentioned. Wasn't sure what I needed so just got everything on it.

Aw man...

Had you run through my "short answer" sections, I bet you could have saved yourself a 6 hour download. :-(

I am going "all in" on the video drivers now, since you are using Catalyst 11.5. (You should be on 11.9, since 11.5 is known to have problems with CoH.) If you need it, here is an outline of the steps to follow for a clean driver upgrade.

Great...now it's telling me that it can't find drivers for the SM Bus Controller. Went through Windows Update, did the vid card driver clean out and reinstall and it started giving me that error. What would I be looking for to fix this issue?

The SM Bus Controller is a motherboard chipset driver. If you have your motherboard CD, you can reload from that (if you built your computer), or go to that manufacturers website to get it.

Or, if it is a brand name purchase, you can go to that brands support page and get your motherboard drivers from them.

It's never anything simple, is it?

AMD motherboard (Asus actually, but AMD drivers and such), so naturally, that got wiped when I uninstalled the vid card drivers.

I miss the days of editing autoexec.bat and config.sys compared to the hoops one has to jump through nowadays.

Okay. That makes some sense then. I was locked on how you could have lost your motherboard chipset driver when working on video drivers. I get it now.

And what I really do not miss is the days of setting things by hardware jumpers. The buggers aptly named because they had the tendency to "jump" right out of your hand... The flip side was, once you got things set they were stable as a rock. Unlike with all the software settings we have now. :-S

Well, two different things have happened since I put in the Catalyst 11.9 drivers.

The first being that on program exit, the system essentially locks up. There's a black screen, but the taskbar is still visible. I can click on the browser tabs, but they don't bring anything up. I still end up having to reboot.

The second being that I'm still getting the same BSOD message that I got in the OP. It's slightly better in that it's a tossup between the two options rather than constant BSOD on program exit.
