Stj Sweeping Cross Combo - WAI?

I'm noticing an unusual situation when using sweeping cross as a finisher. If I hit, combo works and resets, no problem. If I swing at one mob and miss, the combo does not reset, giving me the chance to use another finisher (or SC again if it recharges in time).

However, if I line up multiple mobs (usually 2) and use SC and miss both/all of them, my combo points are reset as if I had hit one. Is this WAI? I'm just not sure I understand the mechanic here. Miss one, o.k., you can still use your combo points. Miss two, you're out of luck.

I'm not sure if this happens with Spinning Strike also as I have not yet reached that level. I searched the forums but couldn't find any reference to this phenomenon. Any clarification offered would be much appreciated.

It's supposed to reset only if you hit something.

If you miss everything it shouldn't reset.

It seems to work like this for me so I don't know what's been happening to you.
