3dfx died because they spent money like drunken sailors on lavish parties. Their solution to making a better gfx chip was more and more brute force. Their purchase of STB was more of a distraction to try and hide how badly 3dfx was failing.

There are some companies who sold their own. ATI for the longest time sold their own. Matrox sold their own cards.

Thing is, ATI and Matrox had set themselves up for that from the beginning.

3dfx started out as a fabless design house and sell the chips they got created at a foundry to OEMs.

Then the idiots decided they wanted a cut of the "fat profit margins" of an OEM *Cue Uncontrollable Derisive Laughter* and promptly bought the absolute WORST OEM (and the only one that was really for sale at the time due to how badly the company was managed).

Back when VisionTek was a going concern, they picked up a couple former 3dfx employees who were also former STB employees.
