Winzip will not let me play City of Heroes, even after I have uninstalled winzip...

This all started today when I decided too install winzip. I noticed that after I had installed winzip, that other programs such as Ventrillo or City of Heroes, would not open, it would just take me too winzip. So, I decided too uninstall the Godforesaken program & now I just can't open anything, it just takes me too a window with a few programs from my Desktop.

Please help me, I have no idea what too do & this has gotten me so angry that it's giving me headaches.

-Knight

It sounds like WinZip changed the file association for .exe to itself. You should be able to change it back, but it is different in different versions of windows. Go to the start menu, click the Help option and search for "File Associations", it should tell you where to go to change it back.

I have Vista, I'll keep looking, but so far, I can't find anything like that.

Try this:

You want the second option, changing file associations.

If it was file extensions wouldn't all of his exe file icons have changed?

Hrmn...yeah. I was just going from prior knowledge that WinZip presents the user with a huge "Wall o'Extensions" that are all checked by default, and .exe is among them.

At least, it used to, back in the dawn of prehistory when I used it.

Okay, I've gotten too the window, but how do I actually do it? It's not giving me options for city of heroes or ventrilo so far.

That's because exe's should only be associated with each individual program.

Can you check the properties of the shortcut you use to start coh where is it pointing to?

I'm in Properties now for the coh icon on my desktop, what next?

I officially have no idea what happened, but I'm glad it worked and you got back in the game. Klaw, thanks for stopping me sending him down the wrong path.

Good. Looks like it redirected all your desktop shortcuts. I guess that makes it more "user friendly" sheesh.

I take it that you wouldn't mind taking control of my Laptop via the share function (I think that's the name of it, I saw it as an option in the help menu) & help me out from there? :/

Exe files actually get asociated with a portion of windows called the shell. There are many sites out there on the net that have a reg file in a zip file you can download. There are some nastY viruses out there that change Your exe associiation to them selves to keep you infected and kill you AV. I have the reg file that will fix this for you, I can see if I an get it uploaded somewhere when I get home from working...which is often pretty late PST time, if you can't find it.

You shouldn't have to fix any shortcuts after the problem is fixed

Just about everything that's on my Laptop has been rewritten too .exe & it'll either just take me too a window with a few programs from my Desktop or it'll say, Application not found.

Does anyone know how too reset a Laptop back too an earlier date?

Under Start Menu
Applications
System Tools
System Restore

Back up anything you don't want to lose FIRST.
Then you can try restoring to a previous restore point.

If that doesn't undo the damage, you're looking at reinstalling the system.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Although i dont use Winzip anymore, i am incredibly grateful that i no longer use it, especially if this problem crops up.

I now use 7zip for all my compression uses...
