BS/Shield - first ever build attempt

Like the title says, this is first time trying to make a build. I think I did ok, but as I've never had a 50 (scrapper is still 38) I'd appreciate it if people could look it over and point out any flaws.

It's OK. If you're used to SO or common IO performance on a sub-50 and you built this bad boy, you'd find it VERY solid. But it can be better.

Try to get 2-3% more melee defense. Don't rely on Parry. Either drop Parry or slot it up as an attack for use on incarnate trials.

You want more defense debuff resistance. Use three Membranes in Active Defense and pick up Grant Cover.

Accuracy on a few attacks is lower than I'd prefer. Adding a Kismet unique would help.

Shield Defense likes recharge. 15% and Hasten isn't really enough to have fun with. You want the double stack on Active Defense to have as much uptime as possible to keep your defense debuff resistance really high. You want to spam Shield Charge. Ideally, you have recharge approaching a gapless Head Splitter -> Hack -> Disembowel -> Hack. You'll probably have to settle for something less without a high budget, though.

Endurance looks like it could be a problem in a long fight, though Conserve Power means it has to be a really, really long fight. It might be acceptable to you as is.

For maximum survivability, the build would like Aid Self or Rebirth, but you may not be pushing it hard enough to need either. I don't have either on my Fire/Shield and I can still do a Rikti War Zone Challenge.

Thanks for the suggestions. Had another try at updating it, the main points being:

I was over the softcap on ranged, so I switched a mako's to crushing impact for extra recharge.
Switched multi-strike to another obliteration in headsplitter, to hit the melee softcap.
Dropped parry and got grant cover.
Added a kismet +accuracy.
Put 3 membranes in active defense, although as they seem to be going for 500 million each on the market I might leave those out for now in the actual build. With nothing to spend it on, I kind of slacked off on my marketeering.
Added 2-3? LotG +recharges.

Still under the softcap on aoe, but frankly I think I can live with that.

Just some comments from me rather than a complete build change:

Obliteration is a nasty set in disguise. Damage, recharge, defence, accuracy... It looks wonderful until you see the End reduction it puts in your attacks. 18%. For a 6 slotted @50 set, that's pretty terrible. Shield Charge+Headsplitter will use up a quarter of your end (almost) in two clicks.

If you're resigning yourself to Cardiac as an Alpha slot, you'll be ok. If not, I'd be looking at reducing the End cost for Headsplitter, as well as squeezing in a Miracle +Recovery at least. It depends on your attack chain though.

True Grit slotted with Reactive Armour. Again, it gives some nice set bonusses, but the benefits of slotting the power with just +Res aren't that great. Your mileage may very well vary on this though.

I'd also look at moving that Gaussian's set from Build Up into Focussed Accuracy. The Chance for build up IO is not as effective in a click power as it is in a toggle.

The problem (not really a problem as such) with Shield is the relative ease with which you can get to the soft cap. There are so many ways of doing it, no "right" way exists.

For my BS/SD I absolutely wanted Musculature, so I concentrated on getting as much -End/+Recovery into the build as I could. Adding the fact I wanted +Recharge (which compounds end issues) and it was a tricky build.

One (off topic) question about Active Defence. It's sat on auto, and yet when it recharges, it doesn't fire until the effect has worn off, implying that it's unstackable. Is that my imagination?

I haven't checked in game recently, but it certainly WAS stackable last time I checked.

Good point about obliteration in head splitter. I remember specifically putting it in shield charge in the first attempt because the endurance doesn't matter so much; but the second try I was focusing on getting to the softcaps and didn't catch that.
I suppose I could switch it to whirling sword in a pinch, and put multi-strike back in headsplitter.

Didn't think about the gaussian's set in focused accuracy, but it certainly seems to make sense; with a single io in build up recharge it's more or less the same currently.

About true grit, seems I don't actually need the set bonus from that reactive armor now, so I'll play around with it a bit more.

I tinkered just a little. Missed melee softcap by .2%- one could switch the scirocco's to whirling sword and swap oblits into slice and be over the melee softcap. I probably wouldn't notice .2%. Kept your power choices, etc. I prefer true grit slotted for heal rather than resist. Might give you some ideas, anyway.

edit to add: i'd consider moving the third slot in hasten (or some slot) to a single heal in OwtS, which would get you to within 2hp of the scrapper hp cap while it's active.

another edit to also add: your build looked nice, especially for a first ever IO build. Kudos!

one last additional edit to add: the gaussian's set is fine in build-up, imho. It recharges the power in the same amount of time as an oblit slotted shield charge, it's like they were made for each other. Moving it to FA to take advantage of the proc is of pretty minimal benefit, and you'd have to find slots for build up. On other builds it's not bad advice, as a faster build-up means more dps. I like the combo on my f/sd, when my build up recharges, I know my shield charge is about to be up; build-up while positioning for max aao, KaBoom! Pretty orange numbers.

The Kismet +Acc is probably overkill after the set bonuses, so you could get your 3rd slot in Hasten instead, or use it somewhere else.

This was a good build to start with and EJI made it even better. I think I might steal it almost as-is

I would replace the kismet with another LoTG to another +10% regen bonus

Here is my variant on the BS/Shield build, it has softcapped M/R/AoE defense, and as much recharge as I could squeeze in there. Always looking for feeback.

TheOOB:

I made some small changes for some small gains: slightly better recovery (it looks slightly worse because mids doesn't account for pshifter procs), +139 hp, +1 hp/s regen, a tiny bit more s/l resist. Looks like it'll still be sucking wind, though. I'd drop maneuvers (see above build for how to pull that off ).

No, everyone is getting about the same mileage out of Reactive Armor on a Shield Defense character. Not much.

Try getting 6 slots in True Grit (if you don't already, I can't look at the build from work), and slotting 3 Numina's (not the proc, that should go in Health or Physical Perfection), and 3 Aegis.

The bonuses in Reactive Armor are nice if you're looking for typed defense. But you're looking for positional defense. You burned 4 slots to get 0.63% defense to ranged and melee. 3 Aegis will net you 1.56% AoE defense for 3 slots. Since you're already softcapped to melee and ranged, losing that 0.63% probably isn't going to hurt you, and a little more AoE defense can only help.

Plus it means you can slot the power for it's main purpose: Raising your Max HP.

Also, moving Gaussian's to FA to take advantage of the proc is a bad idea. FA is a notoriously end hungry power. If you're going to slot it in a toggle, take Tactics instead. If you don't have or don't want Tactics, Build Up is an acceptable alternative. I put it there quite frequently if I find my build is too tight to fit Tactics into it.

I'll defiantly take some of those changes into account. I think switching focused accuracy for tactics(6 slotted with gausians) would help with end, and I was thinking of going cardiac anyways(which would also give some extra resist, making the build harder to kill).

What i'd really like to go is fit in spring attack for double shield charge action, but I'm not seeing a good way to fit shield charge in and still be able to softcap my defenses.

Squeezing in another attack will be tough... You could drop slice for spring attack, using the same slotting. Whether it's worth it to give up a pretty nice cone attack for a long recharge pbaoe will be a player preference/playstyle thing.

Someone who's more familiar with survivability spreadsheets could give you a more definitive answer as to which alpha will be most beneficial (paging Werner ), but if you can get your end manageable without cardiac, spiritual also offers some nice benefits.

(numbers based on my revision of your build, not the OPs, though results are probably similar)
Cardiac improves S/L resists from 31% to 35.4%, roughly 14%. Slightly less improvement on your other resists.

Spiritual gives you 40 more hp (2%ish), and increases regen from 23.77 hp/s to 25.91 hp/s. Conserve power recharge drops from 249s to 212s. Shield charge goes from 29s to 26s, similar improvement in build-up. Hasten drops from 141 to 128, and AD from 63.5 to 57.6.

The switch to tactics seems like a good idea, as to improving end use- were you actually running FA? all the time?
