Softcap is over-rated. As some have mentioned, the secret is good Inspy use.
My Shield tank (dont remember exactly) sits around low to mid 30s without IOs, has some endurance issues which are also fixable with Inspies and destroys spawns ( Shield/SS ).

Also the only thing slow is how long it takes to get thru a spawn. But that actually makes the battle feel like a 'real' conflict as opposed to 'click-click-done'.

If you are trying to min-max and get ultimate XP/minute then you need to IO and consider all AT possibilities. But if your looking for an SO-only farmer, Tankers are the best I have played. Side-note here : I hate hospital trips. If not, then I might be singing the praises of another AT.

The softcap is overrated on the forums especially for many AT's, but for a defense based secondary, even shield which has decent resists on a tank, I wouldn't call it overrated.

I'll 100% agree its all about the inspirations. Plus softcap means you can use macros and turn those purples you'd need into reds for MOAR DMG.

Are we talking just 'spawns' or ambush spawns? (that goes up to 40-50 mobs). A decent ambush farm takes well over 20 minutes (BAF hall beasts) and gives you little to no space to run dry in insperations and having 16 mobs continues slamming on average resist, you wont last that very long on just 30% defense.

The more you can focus on the base triangle, the less you rely on insperations.

The 3 tanks (ice, shield, inv) hit softcap with powers that are commonly chosen, there is no need to skip such and go spam insperations if you could get the easy way.
Every wasted purple because you didnt want to go softcap is 25% dmg lost, i rather pick the damage then skipping powers that i have place for anyway.

Softcapped Shield/Dark Tank with just so's (not that the secondary matters)

47.5% defense to all positions (Yes, I know Stealth's Defense suppresses in combat. I have it set to "while attacked")

Shouldn't be gimpy at all, even... Especially considering free players can use Hami-o's (I think?)

edit: Cytoskeleton's might even get better enhancement values for less slots.

Its a redundant slamming of a few powers but fire/ice tanks kill pretty tasty on SOs alone. I still only regular level 50 IOs on him and he does alright with all content at @+1/x8, although too many ring mistresses can suck big time.

Base farm toon?

The original and still best: fire tank.

3F to be exact, eat purples to survive and aoe until you're all done.

Easy.

Considering the standard time for soloing an ambush farm with the maximum amount of ambushes at +4/x8/bosses is around three or four minutes, I would say you make a fine point as to why going for defense rather than offense is not a sound idea for a farming character.
