DB/ELA Goals in ITrials

Hello all,

So for my next project I'd like to roll a DB/ELA Brute for use in itrails and "end game" content. I am new to this combo, though not to melee style toons, and was hoping for some general advise. I'm looking for strong damage and hopefully strong defense. Here are some questions I have:

1. For either set, are there certain powers that are not really needed or are typically skipped?
2. What should I focus on for set bonuses (what goals will help for end game content)?
3. With the above question, are there certain mins I should strive for, such as X global recharge to sustain attack chain Y?
4. The toon is concept so I'd like as many combos as possible, but are there any that are "worthless"?
5. Hero APP or Villain PPP, is there typically a preference here?

Sorry for so many questions, but I'm used to a high end kat/regen scrapper, so this set is new to me. Influence is not an issue so I'm not concerned if suggestions are pricey. I'm not necessarily asking for a build, but I wont argue if one is shared as reference either. With feedback I'll likely create my own to post for review later.

DB looks cool.

Mine is only around lvl 34.

You might have to take everything from the DB side except Taunt (at least while lvl'ing) and find out what you like. I personally haven't seen anything i want to skip yet. Sometime's i want to buff myself, sometimes i want to debuff the target/s, but usually i switch back n forth.

I don't see alot of DB's around, You'll prolly have to consult a guide.

because the set is based off combo's, you probably dont need alot of recharge and therefore Hasten seem's skippable.

epic pools seem wide open, but you prolly wont have more than 1 or 2 power pick's..maybe just grab a ranged attack and call it good?

It'd be nice to know what travel power you prefer..

CJ seems like a given. Then either SJ or Fly for vertical movement.

I guess you could do something like this? (assuming all Primary's are chosen)

I can see using some of the lower combos early to get attack chains going, but use the AV and Sweep combos in the end. /elec makes it easy to run the AV combo from a recharge and end standpoint. I don't have a build for it and my DB/elec is a scrapper so there will be a difference in epics/patrons as well. I would mostly build for S/L def cap, or one purple away from it and then enough recharge for your ideal attack chain and getting Energize perma if need be. HP/regen would be third on the list.

1. DB/ELA is really heavy on powers. Just alot of good things. Most people skip nimble strike and get Sweep/Attack Vitals combo atks.
2. ELA has good survival in the trials. You can just stand in front of the towers as they shot you. Basic lethal/smashing def is good for lambda. BAF is just a zerg fest so set bonus aren't a biggie.
3. Cant really answer, i made mine defensive heavy since redraw bugs me
4. When you do trials the combos are pretty much useless when most things are dead in under 3 attacks. The mobs are also to big to line up cone attacks. Once you achieve enough recharge the combos take too long because of activation times.
5. The problem with DB is that its hard to fit in APP/PPP. You just have to get too many attacks from the main power set. Doing BAF without out APP/PPP powers is even more annoying because of the prisoners running. Without ranged you end up chasing trying to melee. I know some people that say its the too bad, but when you come from another character with MU you notice the difference.

Thank you for the reply's. As far as travel powers I'm looking at SJ thematically. I'd possibly like the new leaping attack for concept, but not a huge deal if it's not in there.

It'd be a shame to have to skip the APP/PPP and not have a range power, but I was more concerned if I needed something specific for survival (such as some builds take shields for added defense).

It sounds like I'll go for S/L defense, which I've come to like having so that's no big deal. I like being able to take lots of punishment and understand the value of surviving longer means more DPS overall; after all a dead character does no damage.

I'll work on a build and see what you all think soon.

Here's my first attempt at a build. Please feel free to dissect and offer advice. Here's what I have and what concerns me:

Good:
1. 45.1% S/L Defense (that's soft cap right?)
2. All DB combos available (though I may not use the lower level ones much)

Concerns:
1. End use. I'm running a lot of toggles it seems.
2. Energize is not perma, looks like about 15 seconds of down-time.
3. No range powers

How useful is grounded? Any thoughts on things I can change up?

45% is the soft cap. That being said, having all combos available is fairly useless at high levels. if you want it for when you have to ex, get a 2nd build. nimble slash should be dropped.

Concerns: end use is nothing for /ELA. between powersink (which you need more recharge in) and energize giving you a 60% reduction in end cost to all your powers, you will never really have end issues.

No range power is a minor concern, but not huge. I've made a build for you to contrast. I had some serious concerns about the one you posted, and I'll do an in depth critique.

First of all, you did a lot of building for set bonuses, and left the powers underslotted for things like recharge. for an end game build, 41% rech is not enough. not nearly enough. In my build your attacks have around 80% recharge, which further emphasizes the fact that you can drop nimble slash. your attacks will be up plenty, I promise. Dont chase set bonuses exlusively, make sure your powers are properly slotted too.

Second, individual powers. Blinding feint is an attack. Slotting it with gaussians only makes me cry. I've slotted it as a normal attack for you, but put in the chance for build up in it, cuz its fairly reasonable. better for scrappers than brutes, and its the first slot I'd move, but still, not bad.

Power sink: needs more recharge. this is how you get endurance back! 47% rech is not enough. Mines at 74%, and with 1 IO swap could be ED capped if your end usage was bad enough.

Hasten: You dont have it. bad puppy, bad.

Grounded: overslotted. you're over the energy res cap. I pulled the slots, put the 3% def IO in there for you instead. my build is .3% under the energy res cap. More than good enough.

Power Surge: okay, if you want it, I guess. its not a good power. the crash will kill you dead. yea, it'll soft cap S/L res while its up, but when its crashed, you're dead. I skipped it. Good power to replace it? Hasten!

anyways, my build is posted below. I hope it helps. I like to explain my choice so you understand why rather than just getting to copy a build. The points I've made, I cant emphasize enough. DB is one of the best end game attack sets, but requires mucho recharge. You want spirtual alpha. That being said, my build is still 3% short of soft cap. The glad IO would solve that, pulling the build up slot from blinding feint. 45% is not really required for ELA since you have pretty good res to S/L already. It's still nice, and its an option, just a touch more expensive.

Thank you for the feedback. Your build accomplishes what I was looking for more efficiently and adds more damage/recharge. I did make a couple changes, let me know what you think:

Basically I changed the Mako and chance for build up IO's in Blinding Feint to Rectified Reticles to get the S/L defense buff. For about a tenth of a second recharge sacrifice and a bit less accuracy I gain the 1.88% defense buff and some increased to-hit (when the power lands).

I also pulled the Miracle +recovery out and put the slot it into tactics so I can gain the 2pc bonus on Rectified Reticles for another S/L defence buff (and more to-hit). This puts me over the 45% S/L defense cap again.

Though I lose a bit from BF and some recovery, I feel more comfortable being at S/L cap.

The only caution I can give on that, is blinding feint is actually the most important power to have extra ACC in. The reason behind this is fairly straightforward. You're going to lead off most fights with it for the build up effect, and its going to buff the rest of your powers ACC so you miss less. Missing with it means missing with your other powers more, and less chance of double stacking it.

That being said, the only easy solution to soft cap you would realistically be to change the slot you moved to tactics, drop it into one of your resist powers, and throw the glad armor 3% def IO into it. That's an expensive proposition, to the tune of about 2 billion inf to do that.

It would be better, but the price on that improvement might be too high. If you did that, you could fix slotting on blinding feint and you'd still be at soft cap.

Although mine's not quite a complete build yet, I'm going a different route with him. It misses out on a real travel power and tactics, but should be a bit tougher to bring down.
I went Soul for the tents and DK and kept nimble slash to leverage weaken if needed.
