Scrapper/Brute indecision...

Hello!

I’m looking for some advise on the difference between Scrappers and Brutes. They fill pretty much the same niche, melee DPS, and I know Scrappers do a bit more damage while Brutes have a bit better survivability. Is the difference noticeable?

I’m looking to make a Katana/Willpower character, and I’m torn between starting now with a Scrapper, or waiting for I21 and Brutes to get it. Opinions? Also, should I spam out Kinetic Combats and such and get to S/L soft cap without DA, or is it better to build for F/C/E/N defense and let DA handle the L, fearing only “S only” damage types? I lean towards straight softcapping, since it would allow me to use another attack in my chain instead of DA.

Purpose of the character is for all levels, from lowbie 10-20 exemping down, to incarnate trials if that helps.

For willpower I would choose a brute for the higher HP. You can get your s/l resistance high enough that you can sit comfortably below the s/l defense cap anyway, adding DA to capped f/c/e/n should be pretty good.

I dont know anything about katanas damage on each AT though.

There's really not much a reason to pick Kat on a scrapper versus a brute. I think this is one case the brute is better.

From a pure numbers standpoint, I agree.

Offensively, Scrappers tend to come out ahead where a regular damage bonus is available. Another 40% damage to a Brute isn't much compared to 40% more damage on a Scrapper. KM is particularly nice on Scrappers. If they ever get SS with Rage? Oh man...

Defensively, Brutes are ahead of Scrappers across the board, thanks to greater HP, but can come out even further ahead with secondaries that emphasize the benefits of increased HP, like WP & Regen. The only reasons to choose the Scrapper based on the secondary are: 1) if a set was exclusive to Scrappers or; 2) if you wanted the offensive benefits of a set like Shield Defense to be maximized.

The other two main factors are: 1) how much you want to need aggro; and 2) how hard you want your initial attack to hit. If a Brute is on a team with a bunch of other high-aggro ATs, it could find its Fury dipping and damage along with it. Plus, the Brute's first attack in any given mission will always be Defender-esque. Once they get Fury rolling, they can carry it from spawn-to-spawn pretty easily, though.

Damagewise scrapper will always be more dps, always. I you are solo or weakly buffed scrapper will do a LOT more, if you are strongly buffed by a good kin both will be close.

On the defensive side the will be roughtly equivalent when solo but brute will be incredibly tougher with heavy buffing.

As for aggro raise to the callenge is pretty weak anyways.
