Claws / Fire Defense Softcap

Hello, Brutes!

I made myself a Claws / Fire Brute, and man, is it fun. I can cut my way through huge mobs easily which, given that I suck, is pretty impressive. But here's the thing.

I'm interested in using IO sets to cover the character's weaknesses - and right now (lvl 35) this appears to be "damage that isn't Fire", and it looks like it's gonna stay that way for a while. I was going to work on maxing out Melee Defense using IO sets, but I'm having difficulty finding appropriate sets for that purpose - Kinetic Combat, for instance, doesn't slot in more than two powers that the build uses.

Can I get some suggestions of sets that improve Melee defense and work with Claws / Fire (PBAoE, resistance sets, f'instance)? Cost is a concern - I'm not looking for a 6-Billion-Inf-Man here - but I can afford the non-purple/PVP "good stuff".

This would be my suggestion, for the end game, as most of the mobs in the Incarnate trials seem to do alot of energy damage.

Thanks for the fast (and pretty complete) reply!

A couple questions -

(1) While I actually appreciate the point about the end-game dealing more with Energy attacks, I'd prefer a stronger / higher Melee defense for my own playstyle. The answer, "You can't get there from here" is fine, though, but are there sets that offer Melee Defense (even if the other bonuses aren't great)?

(2) For Health - why no Miracle? Is it just a lack of slots? I usually slot health with Numina's +/+ and Heal, plus Miracle + and Heal.

I have a bit more time to give you a better reply. I enjoy the hell out of claws/fire. The first one I made I ran through in Praetoria. As I liked the fast attacks, a PbAoe at level 6 and the ability to be "decent" against most things from 1-20 in Praetoria. The self-heal on a quick timer also helped.

What I noticed is that most of the mobs in Praetoria did fire, energy, or smashing and lethal. And a few mobs seemed to like ranged and or aoe attacks. The clockwork, IDF, PPD and the Syndicate come to mind. The one weakness was against psi or toxic but if the heal was up enough, you got to have some toxic resist as well.

As I moved into CoV, doing radio and tip missions untill I got some contacts under my belt lead me to working up a few different builds.

Until I hit the late 40s up to 50 and Incarnate powers, which lead me to trying to get a build that was good to go in many situations. Both in the trials, as a farm toon, and on almost any Oro arc that sent me back to my younger days build wise.

I typically do not use miracle unless I two or three slot it for bonuses. I would rather go two slots of numina's.

I also have two accounts so I tend to use one as veng bait, and I like having the bonus during tf's and trials, incase the poop hits the fan.

I also use Shockwave and the Forced Feedback proc liberally. It brings back the attacks, Healing Flames and Consume all the faster.

This build includes those Incarnate Abilities I have unlocked and slotted.

Follow up is slotted with Mako's bite for the damage buff and extra hp. It could as easily be slotted for Kinetic Combat.

To answer your question, Kinetic Combat and Obliteration give bonuses to Melee and S/L def. Personally I prefer to get positional defense, as they are easier to find.

If you turn on Vengence you can see what it does to the defense totals. You should be pleasently surprised.

My other goal was to use as few purples as possible. I like what happened without them.

Mids either needs a data chunk or a saved file that is generated by clicking on the link. Post data chunks when you post builds. Also the set bonus totals are not useful to display on the forum because the builds have to be opened in Mids to see all of the powers and sets working together.


My advice is to aim for 32.5% S/L and E/N defense. One small inspiration can then get you to 45%, but you will find that 32.5% is enough for a lot of situations. Going past that with Fiery Aura is going to hurt your recharge too much and you won't be able to run a decent attack chain. You will probably want Weave, Combat Jumping, and Maneuvers in addition to Hasten.
