Help finish (or refinish) Spines/Invul Build

Hello Scrappers,

This isn't anything like an 'uber' build. It's not intended to do anything incredible. I won't be soloing Pylons, or AVs (unless by accident). However, I do want to go out there and play the content.

So, how would you finish this build? If I were to respec, how would you Re-finish this build - no, not completely rebuild from scratch, how would you tweak it to be just a little better? This is the toon, as it currently stands, Live, but with two more levels unclaimed, yet, so he's a full 50, just unbuilt, so far.

Here's my try at it.

From my experience with Invul, it is relatively decent in survivability because it has stacked survivability. Resistance + Defense. What I did was focus on getting higher defense, generally speaking Smashing/Lethal/Energy/Negative.

I managed to get you to 40% S/L defense and 42% En/Neg defense with one enemy in range, and with 5, you'll be soft-capped.. It may be end heavy, but with the Cardiac Alpha slot, it should alleviate a lot of the end problems. On top of that, with the T4 Cardiac, you'll have resistance as well, hard capping your Smashing/Lethal resistance at 75% which is very nice.

I skipped Unstoppable because I generally don't like to have those god-mode powers as a Scrapper unless it is there to save a slot. I'm not much of a number cruncher myself, so I can't tell you if this toon will still run into end problems even with T4 Cardiac, but on mids it looks relatively nice.

Hey, thanks for the response! I do appreciate your willingness to share.

Unfortunately, I'm not looking for a super build. As I said, I posted the build, as it currently stands, after 3 respecs already, and I'm trying to pick my last power and spend the remaining 4 slots, and populate the empties - with the goal of having him ready to play and Have Fun (most importantly) soon.

I've already spent most of my influence, getting him to where he is. I expect I'll have to run a bunch of Tips and Arcs to earn some merits, so I can buy the Unique recipes. For sure, I cannot afford to buy the good stuff on the Market!

My own experience with Spines/Invulnerability - particularly with this character, is that Physical Perfection is very helpful. To switch to Mu, I would have to change my Alignment first... Which means I need to complete this build and Play.

As I said in my first post, I need to finish this build, or use my last respec to make a small adjustment - I don't have the Influence (or the inclination, really) to completely redesign him from the ground up.

What I'm hoping for, is for some guidance on those Last Five powers and the final slots. Something I can reasonably afford right now, so I can get back in the game and... anticipate, possibly, eventually rebuilding him with the awesome IO Sets that everyone covets.

Well, the build is kind of a mess. For starters, a lot of the defense and resistance powers are either unslotted or have "gimmick" IOs in them, like the Gift of the Ancients run sped IO in Tough Hide, but little defense enhancement.

Slot out all the main defense and resistance powers to the ED cap (56% or so) and the little ones (RPD, Unyielding) should at least have what you can give them. If possible, get close to the 75% s/l resistance cap.

The classic slotting for Dull Pain is 5 level 50 Doctored Wounds, which gets you ED-capped on Heal value and almost ED-capped on recharge, or vice-versa, depending on which of the 5 IOs you choose. If that looks costly, it's possible to cheaply 5-slot it by frankenslotting heal/recharge and heal/end/recharge IOs from mid-30s sets...three of those you've already got, anyway (and you have the pricier ones already too). That'll get ED-capped recharge and healing. You can move up to the DW set when you have more money.

Depending on how much change you can stand, there's more; you've 2-slotted things (like Conserve Power and Assault) that I would have left at one, not because one is better, but because I desperately needed the slot elsewhere. And are you using Boxing, or is it just a set mule for the Crushing Impact?

I'd at least six-slot all the attacks (Lunge and Quills). Generally, with Inv you want to go for typed defense bonuses, not positional defense, but that may involve more money than you want to spend right now. Ultimately, for example, I prefer 3 Erads and 3 Crushing Blows in your PBAoEs for good typed defense and better endurance management than the Oblits, which are primarily a positional defense set with notoriously bad endurance enhancement. But the Oblits are giving you some value for now, so replacing them can be a longer-term project.

Thanks for your guidance, Sailboat.

Yeah, the build is a bit of a mess, since it is unfinished. This is how it currently looks, Live. These are the enhancements that I have. Not one of these was bought, they were all crafted from recipes and salvage. Most of them, particularly the Crushing Impact sets and Impervium Armors, are left over from leveling up to 50.

Some of those blanks are just awaiting the right recipes. A lot of those blanks used to have SOs in them. Weave, Conserve Power, Physical Perfection, Quills - these were slotted on the fly, as I leveled-up and then I got the last two levels without taking time to train them. I was on a great team and Pacted with the Tanker. We did real content, not Farms in AE or PI. As a result, my build is unfinished and my Sets are not 'uber', but simply what I had and what I could afford and the stopgaps I threw in place.

For instance, the empty slot in DP should get a Numina Heal/Recharge - which will gain me ED limited Recharge and Heal, as well as a nice bit of EndRed, plus +Recovery and +Regen bonuses. Tough Hide gets a LotG Def and hopefully the +Recharge (which also has a bit of Def) netting me ED limited Defense and More +Recovery and +Regen.

As for Boxing, yeah, I'm actually using it in my attack-chain. Barb Swipe is Terrible and, for the Fighting Pool, I have to take Boxing anyway, so I promoted Boxing in the place of Barb Swipe and it's now my auto-attack fast-acting break-filler. That's been part of the build since about L37.

I'm hoping to find a Steadfast +Def for RPD, or possibly UnY.

From the way this is built, you might guess that I found Endurance Use and Recovery to be an issue worth addressing. It was. It's possible that I've gone overboard on the Impervium Armors and such, and/or that a few simple adjustments will make that less of a problem - such that I'd go looking for Reactive Armors and more +Defense.

Part of the 'problem' is that I REFUSE to pay 30 million for a Recipe. I'm not going to pay a tenth of my total build budget for a simple recipe. In fact, I wouldn't do that for a Completed Enhancement. So that locks me out from simply making an optimum build in Mids and buying the stuff to fill it. I have to work with the influence and enhancements that I Have.

Frankly, my biggest question right now is what to take for my final Power and where to spend those last 3 Slots.

Sailboat, I can see dropping Conserve Power to 1 slot, but not doing so with Assault - I Use that, so it needs to be more efficient. I plan 2x EndRed IOs there.

As for the Obliterations, I'm not 6-slotting them for the Defense. My powers are slotted primarily for effectiveness, rather than set bonuses, though I Have made several choices based on those bonuses. So, I have the Oblits for +Recharge and then I used other enhancements to shore-up the flaws in Obliteration.

If you look at my existing build in terms of 'Complete the Set' and 'What's the best thing I can do with these empties' you'll probably hit on the exact same things I'm planning for. However, please don't try to make a perfect, polished level 50+++ build for me, I can't afford it.

What I need is a dirty, Utility-focused build that makes the most of what I already have, so I can get back in the game and begin earning the Merits and other resources that will allow me to consider an optimized build.

Ah, I usually just make do with Lunge/Impale/Ripper for single-target stabbiness. On a side note, your Build Up is not ED-capped for recharge; I like to get it there because I want it as often as possible.

The way I see it, your best options for final power are:

  • Hasten, 2-slotted, last 2 slots finish Quills. This may be too hard on your end usage; I don't have Mids on this computer to check it out. This would make the most dramatic difference for a single power pick with no prerequisites.
  • Unstoppable, if you can stand the crash. Again, 2-slotted for recharge, last 2 slots finish Quills. This will give you on-call durability if you can get used to the crash.
  • Resist Energies. Possibly only the default slot, finish Quills, stick a free slot somewhere. This doesn't give you much resistance, really, but it does give -recharge and slow movement protection that may make your life easier when facing caltrops and quicksand and the like. If you find the first two options less to your liking, this choice at least gives you something nice without taking any endurance or attention.

You can afford more than you think you can. I don't know if you've had other 50s or not, but at 50 your earning potential jumps, and Scrappers, according to the last time I saw a post of the datamining, are the richest AT in the game. Knocking out your tip missions every day will rapidly bring you the IOs you want, even the priciest ones, and you should be able to run against large numbers of enemies on a Spines/Inv and rack up drops and tickets.

Might as well run the Incarnate arc first so you're getting Shard drops while you're getting the rest, too.

If money is a huge concern, bid dramatically low and hope to get lucky (which works for me every once in a while.) Meanwhile slot out plain SOs -- they're not going to expire now that you're 50 -- and get started earning goodies and cash.

I have a lvl 50 Fire//inv that can out tank a few tanks Which is great some times but with the build you have made im not to sure why you did a few things like on "Resist Physical Dmg" Not to sure why only have two slots You can make it....4 and add in the reactive armor for the 3 and 4 bonus def it gives you.

For the two auto powers the inv gives you"Resist Energies" and "Resist Elements" can slot both of them with 2 slots and use "Imperivum armor" to get the End recovery bonus which is all ways nice.

Thanks for the input. Most of what you chose to do with the build follows my own plans, but I'd like to comment on your questions and the bigger changes.

RPD is 'underslotted' in my build, because the total bonus, even with 4 slots, is rather small. 5 and 6-slotting my attacks means I don't have lots of spare slots for my defenses. I hope to slot Steadfast Protection here, but Not the KB protection - it's wasted on Invulnerability. More than 2 slots here and you're better off with a plain Resist IO in the extra slot(s).

I Could 4-slot RPD and fill with Reactive armor, for the extra defense... In fact, I could burn my last, remaining Respec and pull out all of the Impervium Armors, save for a few pairs to put in Unyielding, Resist Energies, and Resist Elements - for the +Recovery. That might gain me a smidge more Resistance and +4% Defense.

Dull Pain is, indeed, my only heal and my planned 2 Miracle 2 Numina's slotting gives me 87% in both Heal and Recharge. This was the near-maximum that I could squeeze out of 4 slots, without ignoring Set-bonuses completely and just frankenslotting. Your 4-slotting Doctored Wounds doesn't meet this performance - DW needs 5 slots to match this performance. Moreover, the only truly Useful set-bonus in DW is at the 5-slot point, but I've extracted 2 very useful bonuses from my 4-slotting.

I put the +Slow Resistance in Combat Jumping because that was one of the few places it would go. I Could put it in Super Jump and only lose a little jumping speed...

By using HOs, one could easily maximize Invincibility with only 3 slots. However, I don't have HOs. Your 4 slots plus the Kismet certainly redlines the Defense in Invincibility... and you gain 0.05% more Defense, as a result. My preferred slotting, with LotG Def/End, Def, and Def/+Recharge results in a full SO worth of EndRed, ED yellow-limited Defense, a Damage bonus, and 2.8% ToHit. Granted, the Kismet would give me still more +ToHit - if I could get one.

It is looking like the best choice for the final slot is Resist Elements.

If I burn my last respec, I could build this:

Well yeahh ii understand Everythig you said there and all BUT BEFORE YOU BLOW your respec I'll male you a build that I would male it's cheap it's easy it's not a super build but it's really good build that uses cheap IOs and it has it all has great dmg have great def and res and my best part would be end recovery I HATE!!!!!! runnin out of End so I make builds for end recovery and dmg sooo I'll hope on the computer tomorrow just on the iPhone real quick and I'll whip one up quick for you in like 10 ish hours wanna hit the bed but I'll send you what I'd do Sound good!.?
