Non-healing Emp
If you like to buff, there are other sets like Kin or bubbles.

Personally I wouldn't care one bit what you did since 1 person is never going to effect the out come of a mission or task force.
I would make it super clear in all caps your intention of the toon in the remarks section for LFT and I would not put yourself looking for team at any cost. I would also make sure with the Team lead is aware of your situation. I do this with my Petless mastermind this way there is no confusion when I join a team. I always bail if it becomes an issue as well. This way you didn't "Lead anyone on" with your toon.
This game has evolved to a state where empath's are really not needed as they once were. And anyone with half a brain can pull up just about any build on these forums and have a maxed out IO toon. So if someone is so dependant on you then its a defect in there character not you.

I understand that it will be difficult if not improbable to keep Regen Aura up at all times even with Hasten, recharge cap and maybe the Spiritual Alpha slot (which I'll be getting due to the healing and slow movement or to hit buffs.) But as for the choice over Healing Aura or Heal Other, I thought that Heal Other would be better because then I can heal more hit points on a target that needs it at range rather than get in the middle of the fight and risk immediate aggro and death. Thoughts on that part?

I was on an STF where the tanker was a Level 47, had next to no defense, and was trying to tank LR. I was called all sorts of names (and these were people I knew) because I didn't heal fast enough. I decided to delete my first Emp due to that (probably overreacting, but I was really upset by it, and I was still young in my CoX career.) I no longer hang with that group for that and a few other reasons. I know player notes would be fantastic, but I'm afraid of one-starring too many people.

And yes, you were and are overreacting. It's pretty silly to skip one of the key aspects of your powerset just because some people get whiny over heals. The difference between skipping Minerals in the stone armor set and skipping your heals in an empath set is this: You can't use minerals while you are using the main armor toggle (Granite). You can, however, use your heals to supplement your buffs and damage.
Finally, play your character however you want to. People make pet-less masterminds, so it's really not that far off an idea that someone would decide to make a heal-less empath. But don't get angry when people criticize the idea. This is a far cry from merely skipping speed boost on a kin, or the like.
The comparison to a petless Mastermind seems pretty apt here, to me. Feel free to try whatever you like, it's your own fun. I don't think I'd try it, and I would probably not be pleased if I invited someone who claimed to be an Empath and didn't have their heals. I'd recommend putting a note about it in your search comment! That's what I did on my petless Mastermind. (Yeah, morbid curiosity got the better of me. No, it's not a good idea.)
More than anything, I agree with this:
Proud member of Everyday Heroes (Infinity Heroes), Dream Stalkers (Infinity Villains), Devil Never Cry (Freedom Heroes), Enclave of EVIL (Pinnacle Villains), Phobia (Infinity Villains), Les Enfant Terribles (Freedom Villains), Gravy Train (Virtue Heroes), and more!

Naturally, I had to take a heal power as my first power choice for the Emp side, but I plan to not keep it in my tray (took the Heal Other for potentially extreme situations.)

Heal Other, Absorb Pain, and Resurrect, on the other hand, are not particularly good powers. None is set-defining by any measure. They've got long animation times, delayed effects (AP, almost as much corpse healing as Transfusion!), annoyingly short ranges. You have a boatload of other options for rescuing a teammate. Boatload plus one, if you took Provoke.
Now, the only powers I plan to take from the Emp set are the buffs; not even resurrection. Essentially, my questions are: has anybody else tried/done this, and what kinds of opposition would you expect from people I might team with? |
1) Take what you want.
2) Use what you take.
Believe it or not, lots of players violate these two rules with their build. Especially for buffing powers. Give me a guy who skipped Heal Other/Speed Boost/Insulation Shield, and took, slotted and spams a nice secondary blast instead -- and /Ice has plenty of those. Don't give me a guy who took Heal Other/Speed Boost/Insulation Shield, and slotted it poorly and/or doesn't use it correctly and/or doesn't use it at all. Be the former; the game already has way too many of the latter.
Teaming tip: Don't say you are an Empath when you are LFT (except in regeneration intensive content, like Hami raids). Simply say you're a Defender. PuG leaders looking for an Empath (except at Hami raids) will probably object to your build. PuG leaders looking for a Defender will get exactly what they wanted from you.
