Phantom Enigma
Dang Arwen, I've been working a lot of hours and just spotted this. Glad to hear that Phantom came through the surgery okay and is steadily recovering. Best wishes on that trend continuing.

Great Phantom news today! Over night, he drained a LOT of CSF (cranial-spinal fluid) out of his cranium, and the swelling really went down. His ICP (inter-cranial pressure) dropped and all of his vitals continue to remain stable. His night nurse was very pleased with his results and said he made fantastic progress. His day nurse today echoed that and said the doctor was very happy this morning when he checked in on him.
Phantom's doctors and nurses have been asking him to give a thumbs up to answer their questions. Today, he gave two spontaneous thumbs up! Once was when my mom and I were telling him he's doing very well and made good progress, and the other was when I told him Brax was coming to see him in a few days. He also moved his head and feet a lot, which he hadn't been doing much of before. He squeezed our hands on command, and even reached for Mom's hand once on his own.
Great day for progress!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
My 13 year-old son son had frontal lobe surgery in the fall, and I remember all too well how frightening it is and how slow the recovery seems to be at times. He's fine now, and you can't even see the scar unless you look for it!
Hang in there, it gets better!

Hi all! It's been awhile since our last update and I know Arwen's been pretty busy as of late. With the increased activity in the thread today, I hope she won't mind if I take the brief liberty to provide a quick Phantom update for those who are eager for an update.
Phantom's had an incredibly fantastic and busy week this week. He was moved from the ventilator to a CPAP machine at the end of last weekend and is breathing entirely on his own now. He was extubated earlier this week...swallowing okay and was cleared for real food last night (mashed potatoes, yum!). Arwen says he's giving great responses to his doctor and occupational therapist and that his memory is doing much better this go around and is retaining information very well. She reported Wednesday that Phantom was sitting in a chair watching cartoons and greeted her by kicking her (sibling rivalry intact, huzzah!). Her last report also indicated that he may even be moved out of ICU into a regular room sometime in the near future. Overall, amazing progress this week!
As always, Phantom's loved ones are very appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from our Justice family and I know they are incredibly thankful for everyone's well wishes, positive spirit, thoughts and prayers.
Thanks for the update, Manoa! It's wonderful to hear he's doing so well. It's truly amazing the healing capacity of having your friends' and family's love around you, helping you get better. Best wishes for continued good news for Phantom, Arwen, and their family.
Very happy to hear he's progressing well! As for cartoons he can watch, I highly recommend ones starring Bugs, Daffy, Yosemite, Elmer, Sylvester and Foghorn.

Thank you Manoa for posting that! It has indeed been a very busy week. Phantom is now out of ICU and into a regular room. He has all of his tubes and monitors off and out except for the picc line and the heart monitor. He's eating normal food, though it still needs to be pureed before they give it to him. He's still quite raw and tender in his through and esophagus from the long intubation. He was in very good spirits yesterday and laughed a lot. My sister and I are on our way now to see him again.
Thank you all so much for your continued well wishes and support!

Phantom has had quite a week! He's been moved to the rehab unit where he gets an hour each of speech, occupational, and physical therapy. He took some unassisted steps the other day and was walking with the hand rails today. He's been very touched by all your messages of good wishes, care, and concern.
Thank you all so much for all your kind words. It means a lot to all of us!

Sorry for the delay in my updating, but I have really great news.
Phantom's caregivers are having a meeting in the morning to discuss, among other things, how soon he's going to get to come home! We have a meeting with the case worker at 4pm to find out the information. We're all very excited!
Phantom is making amazing strides in rehab. He loves the occupational therapy (doesn't hurt that all of the OTs are really cute women, either ), as they have him do fun things like make pudding, play cards, play Wii games, etc. They're working with him to do laundry and stuff like that now, which isn't fun but will be helpful.
His spirit, sense of humor, and creativity are all in tact. We were cracking each other up today while we put together the LEGO Space Needle kit that Manoa and Somber sent him. We also took a nice long walk and had a great conversation. It's just now starting to sink in what happened to him, and the enormity of it (like that he survived at all) is now something he's aware of. He feels really fortunate to have made it (and he is!) and is very thankful for all the loving and supportive messages he's received from so many people.
Phantom's really looking forward to being home and getting back into his normal life, and fighting/causing crime with all of you again. He asked me a lot of questions today about the new things coming up and was really excited!
