video card recomendation

My card died on me and I got a cheap replacement. I need a new one but I haven't kept up with card technology in over a year. so I got a budget of ~300 bucks and have no real preference of ati or nvida so what's a good card to go with?

this game is about the only graphic intensive thing I run.

my current system is a i7 920 with 12 gigs of ram on an asus P6T Deluxe V2 and a 700watt PSU

There are several 480's in that price range as well. Can't speak for ATI.

You've got the power supply to handle just about any. Consider if you want a card that will exhaust the heat, if you don't have good case airflow. Good luck in your search

I wouldn't go for a Zotac. I don't know the brand.
EVGA is a good manufacturer, they warranty their cards for, depending on the model, between two years and lifetime.
XFX is another good manufacturer, I'm given to understand.

For this game, spending $300 on a card is a touch high. If you want good performance at a decent price, EVGA makes a couple different Nvidia GTX 460 boards that will serve very well, or you can try to go upmarket and look for a GTX 560Ti

23: You didn't say what case you have So its possible that some video cards won't fit in it.

So the safe choice would be the nvidia 560 Ti. Its just over 9" and should fit in most cases. Note the "Ti" after the 560 and don't try to save a few bucks on the weaker 560 card. 560 Ti is running about $230 AR

The ATI choices are long cards which might not fit. (Lack of info) Suggestions would be for the 6950.

6950 1gb is selling for about $230 AR. 2GB versions are about $40 more.

Either of these cards should be more than enough and well under your budget.

Also worth considering if you go for the 6950 you can flash the bios on it to a 6970 in most if not all cases giving a significant boost to performance for no additional outlay.
Note that strictly speaking doing this will invalidate your warranty so if yo do decide to do so ensure you keep a copy of the original firmware so if you need to return the card for warranty you can flash it back to factory spec.

This was certainly the case about 6 weeks ago - the 6950 and 6970 cards were all identical hardware at that time - Radeon may have locked them down since,

Its generally not a good idea to tell someone to flash their card like that. That trick works only with the 2GB card. If it blows and the user is unable to get into the card when it has the out of spec BIOS, well. they are out $$$.

Hence my warning about it invalidating the warranty.
At no time did I say they must or even should do so - just that it is possible. Anyone wishing to do so should check out the process involved and how to restore to factory spec and then decide.

Also from what I've read it does work on the 1Gb cards although you obviously won't get any more memory afterwards.
I actually suspect there will be some suppliers such as Overclockers who may decide to sell some pre flashed with their own warranty.
