Hello! new player here, playing a fire/dark corr and often getting smooshed. I'm lvl 28 now and wondering how i can get my Smashing/lethal defense up. I've got one posi set and one decimation set, and a few of the essential globals as recommended me by the help channel (numina, mircle, a knockback def and luck of the gambler global.

What can i use in my build to get a bit of s/l so i don't get killed by just 7 or 8 even cons so quickly?

Firstly, be sure to get Mid's Hero Builder.

Nextly, your APP will be your best choice for getting defense. As a corr, your best bet is Mace Mastery -> Scorpion Shield. It will give you a great place to bounce off of. However, you prolly want defense now, at level 28. Grab Combat Jumping, Tough, Weave, Maneuvers. Pop a Steadfast Protection +3% Defense to All in Tough (not that cheap, but easy enough to get with merits.) that should net you some defense, stacked with Shadow Fall from Dark Miasma.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

As a level 28 Corr you probably will not have enough slots to spare on sets that increase defense (S/L def slotting tends to require at least a few 4-slotted Kinetic Combats), nor the recovery to run the multitude of toggles that high defense squishies usually have (weave + maneuvers + shadowfall + CJ/Hover etc.).

More immediate solutions are to take Fearsome Stare and slot it for ToHit Debuff (not fear, despite the name), and put Darkest Night on every spawn you see. Together they reduce enemy ToHit (which has the same effect as increasing your defense) and damage.

Is this via soloing? If it is, then turn down your diff setting to what you can manage. The problem with power gaming early is that you have too few of slots, powers, and tools in general to pull it off, or even if you do, you quickly run out of end trying. The 20s is still early enough where slots are rather tight. You still don't have DS who will help out a lot in you staying vertical. Sure, you can add in Tough and Weave and eventually the APP shield, but do you have the end management tools to run 4 toggles? A vanilla SO type of build won't.

For now, I would find a diff setting that you can handle. Work on a build that will pull off what you want to do in the end and start investing in it. DN and FS still should cover a lot of the incoming damage. I would look up binds that convert inspirs into the desired one that you want. Soloing large mobs is very much about chugging inspirs like candy.

Along with that +3% in tough from steadfast, i'd look into the Gladiator's Armor +3% defense proc as well. It's a bit on the expensive side, but in two slots you have yourself a +6% defense. Which would usually require two six slotted powers with high (3.something%) bonus.

Also, speaking of Procs, I prefer to have a Performance shifter: +End in my stamina. It's always helpful
