Origins
*points down the forum a ways* Suggestions and Ideas thataway....
That said, while I don't really see an issue with this, SOs just... eh. Don't get me wrong, I still use them (f'rinstance, soloed Ramiel's arc on my Ice/Psy dom on just SOs,) but given even *common* IOs, I think more people would just sell them.
This would've been great pre-IO, though. I'm just not sure how much it'd be used today.
Sounds like a lot of work when i could just buy some SOs that fit my origin.
Very cool idea though, i for one love SOs because they have all that...story (1-2 sentences haha) behind it compared to IOs

Well the whole point is IO are harder to find, and take time to assemble, so this is something that would figurate on the lower levels.

Here's what I mean:
At low levels you're going to start with TOs - which will drop from everything, and be usable universally, so 1-12 (when you have *no* INF) nobody has anything to convert. And you can delete or sell them, no biggie.
12-22, those mid levels, DOs start dropping - and TOs keep dropping, as well. DOs, of course, have a much wider range of what could use them, being (you can "duh" here) dual origin. Sure, they cost more - but they also sell for more. Plus you're starting to get recipes and salvage (to make or sell.) While there *might* be an argument for some sort of "conversion" here, it's still rather sounding like more of a hassle. Besides, by this point people should have gotten used to the idea that "this thing will expire," so there's somewhat more of a drive to either (a) ignore it or (b) just sell it.
After 22? SOs come into play - but you should also have a fair bit of change, even without sending INF to yourself from richer alts, playing the market, etc.
Like I said, if we were still pre-Issue 9 (when inventions were introduced,) I think the idea would have a lot more going for it. And I will say, as far as ideas to have origins "mean something," this is one of the least disruptive (it doesn't mess with power levels or capabilities, or make assumptions about your character for instance.) I just don't think it'd be used much, myself.

To be fair, I was still flat broke on my original toon until the low 30's - when Inf Rewards started outpacing the cost of slotting SOs. But that was prior to playing SG Mode (I4 in my case) so it might be even worse or a non-issue (depending on if your SG Mates mind loaning you a few million, or if you do lowball bids on low level salvage and vendor them for profit).

- Once you start getting salvage drops, put it all up on the market for 1 inf each
- Once you get recipes, put them up at 1 inf if there are any bids outstanding. If not, vendor them.
- (Optional) If you get one of the few rare low level recipes that are worth something (KB protection, Kismet 6% Accuracy, etc...) craft it and sell it
- If you get a respec recipe, congratulations... you won the lottery. Sell it for a ton of inf and start planning an IO build early.
Inf used to be a struggle into the 30s, but with the amount of salvage you generate it's no longer a big deal. However, that assumes you solo a decent amount... if you mostly fight in large teams you get a lot fewer drops and level faster so you may have trouble affording all your enhancements unless you do some basic marketeering. Still, you can always buy dirt cheap level 50 recipes and vendor them for several thousand inf profit apiece if you have to, or just email yourself a couple million from a high level alt and forget about it.
Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name

Simple solution for getting all the SOs and DOs you need:

Character Origin (Natural, Magic, Technology, Mutation, Science) is a neat touch, but currently, other than determining one start up power, and the icon picture of origin enhancements, they don't do much, only limit you in what you can use.
Proposal:
Allow a character of Origin A to convert enhancements of that origin into a similar enhancement of the other four origins.
I.E.
Johnny is a Magic origin, and he loots a Technology damage enhancement. Damage enhancement is something he really wants, but cannot use Tech origin.
Mary is a Tech origin. Johnny hires Mary as a tech expert, to take the enhancement and "make it work" for Johnny, converting it into Magic origin for him.
Mary on the other hand, seems to have a Magic enhancement, she cannot use. Best she can do to it is sell it to a quartermaster, but lo and behold, Johnny offers her to convert it for her into a Tech enhancement...
You get the drift.
Important note: to prevent characters from converting their own alts' enhancements, make the interface for conversion a two person process like a trade window.
Mary Sue has sent you a request to convert [Enhancement of Origin A] into [Enhancement of Origin B]
Benefit:
1. Origins become a specialty of expertise. People will actually start to care what origin other people are.
2. Encouraged player interaction. A character can hold a business of converting enhancements for a fee. (for all you research nerd types, now you got something to do that actually is a supported mechanic!)
3. More potential for roleplay and hiring people as consultants and researchers to convert enhancements.
Discuss.
