As far as I know, a majority of video cards have no sound capability so pluging your HDMI into a computer will have no effect on the sound. Also, you will have to change your video settings when you plug into a TV.

More specifically, depends a lot on the age of the card. However, that card specifically has an hdmi plug, so it's not using DVI->HDMI. ANd it's a 400 series with an hdmi port, so it should pass audio. The problem is, you gotta route audio from the sound card [if it's onboard or a stand-alone] to the video card.

You'd have to look at your card manual to determine where the audio connection is [to be honest, I can't tell by looking at the stock photos of the board]. And also your sound card manual to determine where that connection would be on the board, I believe, it's normally the spdif connector, but I'm not positive.

I placed the old video card in and everything works fine on the sound again, there has to be something I have to switch or allocate so it works, it shouldn't be a matter of re-routing any connections, maybe for the hdmi to the tv to work with sound, but not for it to work just on my speakers where the output is. When I put in the other video card the new EVGA, it says that there are no playback devices. But when i have the old video card in, they are there clear as day and working, Realtek high definition audio speakers. That makes no sense

Ok, different issue then what was thought.

What was your old video card? And, RealTek HD, so onboard sound? What motherboard is it?

Danke, seeing a few other folks having similar instances, not finding solutions as yet though.

As frustrating as it is, I'd prolly have to lean towards contacting HP's cust support if that's available to you.

Alternatively, you could try digging through the bios options, but I really wouldn't know what to look for there with an hp box, and it's not a good place to go 'messing around' if you don't know what you're doing.

Think I got it. The video card may be producing a fake sound card device, check the bios settings to see if there's an option to automatically disable the on-board sound if there's a sound-card, or similar. To be honest though, I'd really suggest going through Hp Tech Support if you can.

Ok, well with bios, not much experience, but if i disable it, i could always enable it again, that's kinda what I was thinking when talking to my friend today. But not sure how to go to the BIOS atm to do so, quick references? heh

After having my video card die today, I had a similar problem (and I too switched from a 8600 GTS). It is a KNOWN nVidia issue with motherboards with onboard audio:

Question
After installing a new Geforce graphics card with native HDMI audio or Displayport audio, my PCs onboard audio disappears.

Answer

Certain computer motherboards which feature an onboard audio controller will disable the onboard audio controller if it detects the presense of another audio controller installed in your PC. Newer NVIDIA GPUs such as the Geforce G210, Geforce GT220, etc. feature an onboard HDMI and DisplayPort audio codec. This allows the graphics card to send audio as well as video to a connected display via HDMI or DisplayPort if your display can receive audio through these inputs and if your graphics card came with either of these display outputs. Even if your graphics card does not have a native HDMI or DisplayPort connection, if the PC detects an NVIDIA audio codec on the NVIDIA GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), it may still disable the motherboard onboard audio controller. To correct this, you will need to go into your motherboard BIOS and change the setting "Onboard Audio" from "Auto" to "Enabled". This will force the onboard audio controller to always be enabled even if there is another audio device present in your PC. If your motherboard BIOS does not include this setting, check with your PC manufacturer for a newer motherboard BIOS which may add this option.
Hope this helps. I also have a Pavillion, and setting the audio in the BIOS to "enabled" got my sound back.

Thanks that's what we were figuring, hwo do I get to BIOS though, f10 while starting up?

Also, I DO want to send it to my TV, so getting the sound to work to that would be good as well if anyone knows how to get video/sound to it. I plugged in the HDMI cable to it, and set it on the tv to that cable input, but no picture came about, or sound. I imagine I have to set it to display on the tv, but not sure what i'd do to route the sound to the tv, while still maintaining the sound on my computer monitor/speakers part as well.

Yes, hit F10 while starting up. Look for Onboard Audio (probably in Advanced, near the bottom):

Highlight it, hit enter, select "enabled", Save & Exit the BIOS.

That should restore your sound. I'm unsure if it will transmit through the HDMI or not, but at the very least it will restore your computer speakers.

Yeah i tried it and it worked WOOOHOOO!!! the sound is working on the TV too now! Only hitch left, is when I have lets say the CWTV website over to the tv, and i set a show i'm watching like Smallville right now, when i put it to full screen, and return the mouse to my computer monitor, when I actually click on the computer monitor screen anywhere, it takes the video on the TV down from full screen Any idea how to stop this and keep it at full screen on the tv and still let me mess around on my monitor?

Also the video on the tv, isn't as clear, the web site comes in looking like it's HD but not the video. Any idea how to fix that, and also it's kinda jumpy, but not when i'm watching it on the monitor. I'm open to ideas to fix that too.

Also, couple issues. One, i'm sure i just have to set the default in the game somehow, but when i load up coh, it goes to the monitor, and I can't get it to go on the tv.

Also, the sound, i have to set it as a default, between the desktop speakers, and the tv. When i set it, anything i open will use those, but i can't switch between speakers while something is open and using them for some reason, any idea how i can keep switching between which speakers are used at any given time. The ULTIMATE goal, is to use both the desktop and tv speakers, but each will use depending on what's on the SCREEN that they are associated with.

So that way i could say have the game on my monitor, and the CWTV website for example on the tv, and i could have sound for the TV website as I'm watching it, and i could hear my video game on the desktop speakers/monitor.

The best thing I can suggest is to see if you can change the settings in the nVidia Settings Panel. Other than that, I don't think I can help with what you are asking for.

Well, i tested something, if i have a window open with sound, then change the default speakers to the other audio and open a new window with audio, it WILL play on both the desktop and the tv audio. With each window playing on each different audio device. So it IS possible, or should be at least, just not sure of the stipulations, or if the video card/drivers will let it without that workaround, which really isn't when playing in full screen mode XD Which I still get that issue.
