Storm/Dark Build Help

Well I have duo'd a storm/dark def and as soon as I hit 50 I pretty much stopped playing it and benched it. I want to update that character to make it much more playable and fast paced than it currently is.

After playing on the toon for a bit solo it just gets depressing to watch all of your damage be DPS - for a scrapper at heart. So I have buried my head in mids and come out with 2 possible builds. I've found that when playing on teams (which I do most of the time) overlapping Thunder Clap and Dark Pit will stun anything up to and including bosses. This character seems to utilise a variety of soft controls to mitigate damage.

Bearing that in mind, build 1 has increased HP (a bit) and damage while still remaining a good debuffer and is slotted to give a lot of ranged def (38%) because other than going in to melee to fire off a Lightning Storm or Thunder Clap I'll be out at the back debuffing where possible. I've left out the nuke because although it massively debuffs -tohit I found a defender with no end is just useless.

The second build focuses on regeneration not defense and debuffs. The idea here is that debuffing the enemies tohit will stop them hitting you and in the mean time you will regenerate all the damage that hit you. My concern is that -tohit is totalled up the same as defense so that I'll end up with less useful defense than the other build as well as a defender having less HP, there will naturally be less regeneration. It also has a lot of recharge.

As far as alpha slot goes, I was thinking of going for Cardiac Core Paragon to make sure the end use is good and to boost the resistance from Steamy Mist.

I will post the builds up when I get back to my computer and update this OP. In the mean time can anyone give me any advice or a build that far surpasses both of these?

On my Storm/Dark, the set bonuses I went for were Recharge/Recovery/Defense/Damage in that order... Personally, I find that I have no problem doing damage on teams. I don't solo too often, but running at +0x8 is no problem when I do. On teams, my attack chain basically consists of TT+NF which can really put out the damage even if the orange numbers are small by themselves. (There are a LOT of them though)

This guy also feels like the most powerful toon I have. For instance, on the ITF, he can single handedly hold off the dwarf/nova ambush at the end of the first mission with freezing rain, hurricane, tornado, and lightning storm. I won't usually kill many of them, but they are basically unable to do any damage to the team.

I changed around your second build (since I couldn't open the first) to what I would do. This is pretty close to the build I have. I originally went with the Cardiac alpha, but switched to the Spiritual Alpha because I find that Power Sink solves most of my endurance issues.

I think the only power that I changed around was swapping Electric Fence for Thunderstrike. I don't find myself in melee too often and the -KB from Thunderstrike is handy when soloing, so Tornado can chew up single targets.

I can't open the OP's two sample builds at my alternate secret location in the real world (work). I would suggest if you do decide to go the dark pit/thunderclap route, that you should go all in. Take the Dark mastery hero epic pool. Oppressive gloom will stack even moar stun in AoE fashion. By applying thunderclap, most likely you are toggling hurricane on and off for the stun. Dark mastery also has a damage buildup type power and a PbAoE endurance refill power. All of these features along the stun route are benefited by extra stun and extra recharge in the spriritual alpha. Also note, if you are not fully slotted for the slows, freezing rain and snowstorm should benefit from the spiritual partial radial revamp. That's not a shabby approach at all.

Thanks for doing me a sample build, I'll take a look over it when I get out of work. I wonder why you all can't open my mids builds? My version is up to date... I'll post the build manually as well as a datalink and datachunk in a bit.

I'll take a look into the Dark mastery epic pool. The only problem I can see with getting Opp gloom is that I'm only going to be going into melee to do LS and TC and after that I'll be going to range again. So maybe we can discuss your feedback a little more after you can see the builds properly.

Even so, if you toggle on oppressive gloom before running in to TC, you afford yourself some protection while you stun > build up > end replenish. Toggle off when you finished the melee sequence, kind of reverse in flavor to your hurricane. This could probably be set up as a macro. The end replenish and build up are good enough to consider dark mastery. There is also a self-rez!

I don't run mids at work or I could open your build probably.

Still think a storm/dark does not need to try to softcap his defence as tohit debuff works the same (in reverse) Plus you're a defender which means others SHOULD be taking aggro if your are in teams (or atleast sharing a vast amount). I think you should stick to debuffing with regen/rec as sets

this is how i'd do it

If you don't need the endurance from the cardiac alpha, then I think Storm benefits much more form the spiritual alpha for the extra recharge. (more Freezing Rain, more Tornado, more LS) In standard play your debuffs are so massive that the musculature bonus to them won't make much difference. There may be an argument for going musculature in incarnate content where your debuffs are only 48% effective due to fighting +4s but I'm inclined to say no.

A few quick things on your build:
Freezing Rain is primarily useful for the -resistance debuff so I would sacrifice -defense debuffage for recharge. I would swap out the def/rech/end for the rech/end. It's not much of a difference (4% more recharge), but every little bit helps.

Also because you have Freezing Rain to debuff defense, I would sacrifice accuracy in Lightning Storm in order to up it's recharge.

Regardless it looks like you're in good shape.

How do you feel about stopping by Wentworth's and buying a few cheap Centrioles?

You may be a scrapper at heart, but most scrappers have a hard time dealing sustained damage to ten targets at once. A /dark defender with range slotting won't have that problem. What you lack in kill speed, you can make up for by inviting more critters to the DoT party.

In fact, thanks in part to range slotting, I've got the opposite problem. Melee toons frustrate me because, despite their higher damage, I can't cone blast ten at a time like my defenders or blasters can. Squeezing in really close with my scrapper and getting 4, maybe 5 targets in my teeny tiny 8' PBAoE just isn't the same.

I wouldn't of found the duoing part satisfying. For me defenders have to be in 8 man teams force multiplying what people can do. Then there is more of a result, faster levels and being in a party more fun.

I will say that unlike others, I found more use for Moonbeam then Blackstar. It took getting used to but once I had my recharge up, it was well worth it. Now this build is more of a cheap/moderate expense build until I can put some LotG and Purples but, in my opinion when you are dealing with defender, Debuffing and Damage should really be priority, especially since we already have a decent self-heal. I also took the Musculature Alpha slot for even better damage. Now I slightly overdid mine, this is my first 50 and I could add a bit more in the way of debuffs but I solo more with him then I do teaming.

Just a really quick comment Straenge, just stick a normal slow in Snow Storm. Snow Storm is autohit, so the accuracy in there doesn't buy you anything.
