Realistic Look at Possible Netbook?
People still play the game on computers built in 2004 or earlier. Your netbook is more powerful than those people's "gaming" systems. Some play the game on a dialup connection! You're at least not limited by how much data you can send/receive at a time.
You'll be able to solo/duo/trio general missions on minimum graphics. You might even be able to get on bigger teams if you don't mind semi-slideshows when things get explody. Pocket D will probably tax your system because of the fancy doodads in there. Arachnos Maps will make it cry for mercy. You probably won't be able to load the Rikti War Zone or it will be very choppy (due to the randomly teleporting in critters (which are actually stored in the system before being "drawn"); and the common, large-scale NPC fighting; and the mothership background).
You won't be able to raid, you won't want to hang around the common gathering areas very much, loading the market will probably take longer than you're used to. Everything will look like CRAP and probably suffer graphics lag more often than I personally would be able to handle. But it will play.

Sardonic, I have an identical netbook to what you are describing. I already upped it to 2Gb Ram and completely wiped the the hard drive (i left the backup there on that seperate peittion) to reinstall Win 7 Starter without any of the bloatware. (If you dont want to reinstall anything just uninstalll just about everything that comes with it.)
Set your power management to high performance.
It runs CoH successfully in safe mode, but thats as good as you'll get it with any framerate that you could run missions with.
The biggest issue really is that GMA3150, wish I could of got a hold of one of those nVidia Ion netbooks.
You'll discover right away that it should come with 2Gb standard, omg the machine is awesome with 2 gigs in it! burned dvd's , flash video (I watch sports from home a lot), it'll last hours on battery.
Actually, one night, I played CoH and had windows media player in the background, running unplugged with the wifi on for 3hours and it still had juice left. So as far as portable devices go, they work really well. But do two things in advance, especially if you want to run CoH
1) Trim whats installed, or start fresh. (first time I fired it up it took like a minute for IE to open)
2) Get that Extra memory! It only has 1 memory slot, so you'll need to buy a 2Gb DDR chip
It also plays FEAR surprisingly well

if a little less battery life is ok for you, you could try the Aspire One AO522-BZ897
amd dual core mobile processor and an ati 6250 graphics chip.

Any netbook using the Ion2 nvidia chipset would be notably better for COH
Try the HP dm1z. A netbook, but not as you know it.
AMD's netbook chip blasts any Atom out of the water. It's faster, more efficient, has a beefy GPU, and can run 1080p video without breaking a sweat. The CPU is twice as fast as an Atom, moreso in some tasks, while the GPU puts the Ion to shame. It completely thrashes that GMA 3150 in most netbooks. All while having better battery life and being just as cheap.
This AMD chip delivers upon the promise of the netbook; it is the answer to the question posed by Atom. There is no possible reason to buy an Atom over an AMD Fusion netbook.
The HP dm1z happens to be one of the best Fusion netbooks out there, with good base hardware and a neat price.

I'm looking at getting a netbook soon and wanted a realist's opinion of what I would be capable of doing in game with it. The machine I'm looking at is running an Intel Atom N455 1.66GHz processor with a 512KB cache and an 800MHz system bus with 1GB of DDR2 RAM (which will be expanded to 2GB as soon as possible) and integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics running Windows 7 Starter.
I have a quad-core desktop that is and will remain my primary gaming box. This netbook is basically just to give me a tool to connect to the Web while out of the house, and I thought I'd get a sneak peek at what it might be able to do in game. I know it will never see Lag Hill in Cimerora. But is it unrealistic to expect that it will be able to take roleplaying in the D or possibly the occasional solo mission on minimum graphics?
Look forward to your commentary.
