Spines/DA build advice

I've recently dusted off a lvl 40 spines/dark armor scrapper that I haven't used in a while, and am trying to get him to 50. What should I be building for when slotting IOs? Should I focus more on def, rech? I know I definitely need to focus on end/recovery, but other than that, I really don't know. Any help would be appreciated.

Do NOT "focus" on end/recovery. It will cost you a lot of slots to gain a small difference. Instead, get the Miracle and Numina's unique IOs and possibly Performance Shifter procs. Slot your toggles and attacks for endurance reduction properly and you shouldn't have issues.

Slotting for defense is currently the most effective way to improve a character. If you can reach 32.5% S/L and E/N, you will be nearly unkillable in most current end-game content when you use a small defense inspiration.

Post a build and we can see about improving it from there.

This. Its low hanging fruit that will have the quickest noticeable effect.

I went the +DEF route as well. Layered with /DA's Resistances and Dark Regen will make you very hard to kill.

I would also consider investing in the Theft of Essence +end proc. Put it in Dark Regen. It will basically turn an endurance draining power (33 end with no end redux) into an endurance granting power. It has a 20% chance to proc on every mob hit with Dark Regen. If it procs it grants +~10 end per proc. Worst case scenario it pays itself back when used on a large spawn.

Thanks for the tips, I'll get working on a build in Mids. Quick question; is Cloak of Fear worth getting?

Also, how is Oppressive Gloom?

Alright, here's my tentative build...completely up for critique, I might have to go in and lose some recharge.

You went past 32.5% on S/L and left E/N in a bad spot. There is a lot of energy damage at level 50, especially in current incarnate content. Screenshots of I20 suggest it will likely be a major threat there, too.

When you use a small purple inspiration, all the defense you had past 32.5% will be wasted in most content. That means your slotting should be adjusted to raise E/N instead. The biggest problem I see is you underslotted ALL of your toggles. Those are the best source of defense, not set bonuses. If you can tolerate fighting with it on, run Hover. It stacks with Combat Jumping and your other defensive toggles.

Gaussian's is a bad set to use when going for typed defenses. It isn't very efficient at 2.5% defense (1.25% to S/L and 1.25% to E/N) for 6 slots. Boxing should have its slots removed. You are over the 32.5% mark on S/L and can use those slots to improve your toggles.

Obliteration is not a very good set when going for typed defense, and it lacks endurance reduction.

Be aware that the purple sets will likely cost you over 2 billion INF per set. I haven't checked prices lately.

PvP sets can be expensive. Check prices on Panacea before you decide to slot it.

Here is the best I could come up with:

This is tad misleading. While I would agree it is better to have both S/L Defense and E/Ne defense, it's important to remember there is considerable over lap with typed defense. Very few attacks will be exclusively energy attacks. The majority of attacks will a second component. The most likely 'other' component will be smashing or lethal.

Given the choice between {35% S/L defense with 25% E/Ne def} vs {32% S/L defense with 35% E/Ne defense}; I'd chose the first option. (that's specific to Dark Armor scrappers.)

I'll take my Spines/DA w/44% S/L & 40% E/N. Unplayable w/o Cardiac tho.

The majority of damage in Incarnate content so far is ranged energy damage from Praetorian Clockwork. There is no S/L component. It is probably safe to assume the OP wants top performance in current level 50 content as well as foreseeable future content. As I mentioned earlier, screenshots of I20 so far show more Praetorian Clockwork to fight. On top of that, being able to soft cap to two categories of defense with a small inspiration is better than going 5% past the soft cap on one and leaving the other more than 5% short of the soft cap.

I am fairly certain Praetorian Clockwork are not exclusively Energy Damage. The Paragon Wiki article on them supports your statement, but I checked in game because my DM/DA build was to successful against them for that to be true. When I checked the combat logs, I saw lots smashing and fire damage attached to their attacks. I will attempt to get a screen shot of it this weekend.

To try and bring this back around circle and answer a couple of questions you asked that kind of got over swept and break everything down a bit into summary.

You can build to pull out recovery for yourself and produce around +20-25%, but the aspect of how much defense you can generate now far outweighs this (especially with Incarnate Cardiac). So, yes, Defense is a solid direction to go from here, and pull Recharge while you're at it. Combat Jumping, +3% Steadfast (In Tough), Weave, and Maneuvers will start you out with around 15% Global, from there you definitely want to try and reach either 32.5% to a series of areas or max one out all the way. In this sense, either take S/L and carry it all the way to 45% (Really, 46% would be ideal), and then dump leftovers in other areas; or get melee, ranged, and aoe up to 32.5% each so that, as a whole, you can pop one small purple and soft cap to 90% of your incoming potential damage.

Taking this into account, I can answer your question about Cloak of Fear versus Oppressive Gloom. Simply put, OG is counter productive to a defensive build, as it's spending the life you're trying to protect, to...protect yourself. With this, the -To Hit CoF generates "stacks" with your defense, and outside of needing to work on the power's inherently poor accuracy and much higher end cost, it's more beneficial to you. If you were working more towards a resistance boosting goal, or a general build, I'd suggest OG. Although, in either scenario, it's a preference of experience and opinion.

Alright, after all your advice, here's what I've come up with. I don't have hover toggled on, because I'll never use it, and I decided to try out my build without hasten. I'm going to be running Cardiac when I get to lvl 50, so I hope I won't have any end issues at that point. Also, does anyone recommend a different epic pool, or is BM good?

Bohmfalk, try to include the data chunk when posting builds. The link doesn't always work well for everyone.

Your Dark Regeneration slotting is of concern. You didn't slot for any accuracy. Dark Regeneration must pass a to hit check on a target in order to grant you a heal. You want the most accuracy, recharge, and endurance reduction you can get out of the power. Healing is secondary concern. Personally, I prefer to slot DR with 3 Theft of the Essence (acc/end/rchg, acc/end/hea, 20%+end), Touch of the Nictus (Acc/end/rch) and round out the last two slots with Heal/End/rech from any heal set.

Additionally, Ripper is an important part of your ST attack chain. It is also a cone and adds nice AoE damage when in the center of a large spawn. Worth slotting for full damage, IMHO. I'd say lose the slots in Brawl and invest them in Ripper.

Otherwise, the build looks fairly solid to me.

Duly noted....when I get home later, I'll look into that on Mids, and I'll start posting with the data chunk.

Thanks all for the advice you've given, this toon looks like it will be pretty powerful.

Body Mastery is good but if you plan to farm Blaze or Mu would be better. I like not having end issues so I stuck with Body.

I neglected +Energy DEF in my build, but I am pretty happy with the results.

Alright, here's what I think I might stick with. I decided to try a build without Soul Transfer, since I'm building this guy to not die, and I'm focusing more on s/l with e/ne more of an afterthought. And I'll be running Cardiac to hopefully counteract any endurance issues.

Bohmfalk, I like the build and it should be very effective with the Cardiac Alpha slots.

A couple of minor points, more from my experiences than to say there's anything wrong with your approach.

You didn't include the accolades in your power choices. If you didn't get them, be sure and do so. Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey have a very significant impact on your endurance management.

Oppressive Gloom + Cloak of Fear is rather redundant. The two don't stack so really don't need both. Consider dropping one and perhaps replace it with Hasten or possibly Energy Torrent.

Unless you're planning to Hover during most fights, I think your KB protection is a tad low. -8 KB will cover the majority of scenarios, but you'll still get KBd occasionally. -12 KB would be ideal on a final build, IMHO. You can rely on Hover + -8 KB, but if that's your intent you should beef up the the flight speed on hover. (I do this on two of my Dark Armor scrappers, including my main).

I just haven't gotten around to it yet, I'll make a point of that.

Noted. I decided to go with Soul Transfer again, use it for the set bonus and as an "oops" power. Hasten would have required I drop one of my pools, and I think that with Spines/ I have enough attacks.

I checked a long time ago on my /regen scrapper, and thought that Integration had given him 7 points of kb, and he NEVER get's kd'd. Rechecked, and it turns out it gives him 10 pts, so I'm def adding in another kb prot IO.
