Now, I am not going to cast aspersions on anybody's play, but wow, dark/em is a challenging combo. If this is your first toon, I salute you for your ambition!
If, on the other hand, you'd like to tackle something a bit less...difficult...I'd point you at a Invuln/Dark Melee. You still got the whole 'darkness; vibe going on, with a bit of costume tinkering you can get Invuln to look nice and dingy, and Invuln/Dark Melee is...VERY tough.
I mean, VERY.
If you're determined to stick with dark/energy I'm sure there'll be plenty of advice to help you out. Sadly, I'm not terribly familiar with either set.
Good luck, and no matter what, have fun!
Hello, and welcome to CoH! It's a great game, ain't it?

Secondary wise I'd say "anything but energy melee" actually. If you want AOE damage then Fire Melee is good as is Electric Melee. For Single Target damage there's the classic Inv/Super Strength combo which is very effective... it waits until level 38 for any AOE but it gets a good one then and it's single target damage is solid. My Inv is Stone Melee; it offers hard hitting single target damage with solid AOE mitigation with it's knockdown and stun. Dark Melee will be almost totally single target focused but it offers a ton of mitigation with one of it's early attacks having a side effect of healing you.
Unfortunately Energy Melee has always been almost totally single target focused and some time ago it received a nerf in the form of drastically lengthening it's attack animations making it fall considerably behind the other sets in terms of playability. It offers a lot of damage in it's level 35 & 38 attacks but they're so slow animating that frequently your teammates will kill your target before the power goes off.

Agreed with the others. Dark/EM is a decent Tanker, but probably not so good for a newer player. Invuln is a good choice, as is Shields. Both have great aggro auras, and are sturdy enough on their own.
Secondaries with either of those are pretty simple: just stay away from Energy Melee, and you're fine!

I also have to say (just in case you didn't get it yet) that energy melee is really bad. I have a lvl 50 Invuln/EM, which I would really love to play more because Invuln is really good. But /EM is so horrible, he never gets played. I would definitely reroll with a different secondary.
FYI, EM used to be good, which is why I made my tank. Then it was nerfed
I recently slotted up Total Focus on my Energy/Energy Blaster. It does take a long time, but I don't seem to have as much trouble with it as you guys report -- thoughtful target selection usually minimizes the corpse-blasting problem. I like the damage, even on a Blaster who has plenty of big damage attacks, so it seems like it might be good on a Tanker.
The problem my Blaster has with Total Focus is getting killed during the long animation. I can partly work around that by mezzing the foe before starting TF, but it occurred to me that another solution would be to be a Tank with Energy Melee.
Granted, I never used it in the old days. And it is slow, no doubt. Maybe I'm just patient. :P But my experiences with (one of) the slow EM powers, admittedly on a different AT, make me think it's not quite as bad as I've heard/read.

decided scrue it and made a fire/fire
Good choice. You won't regret it, as long as you don't expect to survive everything that comes your way. Fire Armor is one of the less survivable armors, but it makes up for it in killing speed. If you play your Fire/Fire Tank as a sort of hybrid Scrapper/Tank (Scranker) you should be more than happy with it.
