Memory question
Memory sticks need to be placed in groups, but the configuration is dependent on how the motherboard is setup.
There are boards with 2 single-slot setups, there are boards with 1 (or 2 or even 3) sets of dual-slot setups, and there are boards with 1 or more tri-slot setups.
Also, you have to make sure to get the right kind of memory stick. Pin-counts, memory speed and timings, etc. Plus, laptop memory is different than desktop memory (so make sure you buy the right kind).
You need to get the exact setup for your motherboard. If you want to post the exact model (rather than just Presario), we can help you look it up.

Hello, my name is Soulwind and I have Alt-Itis.
There are just to many HP/Compaq laptop models to narrow down with only "2007 Presario". I would go to a memory site like Crucial or Kingston and use their "find memory" tool since it does mention, at least with Crucial's, if memory needs to be in pairs or not for optimal performance.
Of course to use said tool you will need a bit more info than "2007 Presario" to use them.

2007 Compaq Presario c700 CTO laptop (that's what's written down....sorry for lack on info earlier.)
DDR2- 5300
CL = 5
Unbuffered
Non-ECC
DDR2 - 667 1.8v
I'm assuming the Pin count is 200, since all the DDR2 5300 on newegg.com are 200 pin count.
That help I hope?
Thanks again!

You can max at 2GB but have 2 slots, each of which can accommodate 1GB sticks.
Also, the HOWTO for swapping out RAM for your laptop.
According to Crucial's memory finder, the c700 cto laptop has 2 single slot banks.
It should currently have 2 512mb sticks for a total of 1GB on the laptop, and can accept up to 2 1GB sticks.
Crucial is selling them for $19.00 each.
(I'm not recommending you buy Crucial -- who you get them from is up to you, but this at least gives you the info to buy the right kind).
Here's a link the memory sticks you need:

Edit: what that means is, since it's 2 single-slot banks, you can "get away" with mis-matched memory. So you could just buy 1 1gb stick and take out one of the 512 sticks to go to 1.5gb. But for best performance (and a whole extra 20 bucks), if you're going to do the hassle of an upgrade, I'd recommend that you buy two of them and go to a full 2gb.

Hello, my name is Soulwind and I have Alt-Itis.
Awesome. Thank you all a ton. I knew asking here was the best way to go about things
Thanks everyone. I;ll be getting her 2 gigs. Much appreciated
And ordered. Maybe now she'll be able to do more than 2 things on her laptop without it shutting down on her. lol
Again, thanks for the help.
If I buy 2G of memory for my girlfriends lap top, of which I assume, but don't know for sure, that it has 2 slots. Can I just buy 1, 2gb stick and leave the second slot empty if it has one? or does it definitely have 2, but if I assume and buy for one, will the empty slot cause an issue?
It's a 2007 presario and came stock with 1gb. Too bad Vista takes up 700m of that.
I know nothing about Laptops and don't have access to it, currently. I do know it's DDR2 - 667, 1.8v. (ddr2 - 5300)
I assume 2 slots, buuuut....lap tops are a bit different than comps. would 1 stick suffice?
no, this isnt for her to play on, but I trust ya'll to answer my question before I could find the answer else where.
Thanks gang.
