Getting purpled on the cheap?
I admit, until now I've been something of an invention refusenik- just not terribly interested. But now I've got a couple of level 50's that I'm working through the incarnate slots with, and I'm looking at ways to make them better and stronger, including IO's.
So here's a question for those in the know in these affairs- if you want to get a set of purple IO's for a character, what are some good ways to do it as cheaply as possible? One character is a Katana/WP scrapper, the other is Dual blades/WP. |
For example, if you have /Shield character you can fairly easily soft-cap your character's defense to all positions using IO bonuses that are found on non-purple sets.
You should get Mids and see what IO bonuses will do for the characters you're thinking about improving. I've found purples to be most useful for Dominators because they retain the recharge bonus at any level. Most of my scrappers have enough attacks that recharge isn't a big concern -- I'd rather get defense bonuses, and purple sets melee characters typically use don't have defense bonuses.
Some of the purple sets are much cheeper than others. The Confuse set is cheep, as is the Stun set, and the pet set isn't all that expensive either compared to the damage sets.
I really should do something about this signature.
That's because the pet set is terrible

there's some excellent advice there but I'd also make a couple of additional suggestion if you're brand new to using Inventions:
Avoid it on your favourite character if you are experimenting for the first time. Use it on a toon you will play (so get the feel of the difference) but if you do manage to make a muck up it's not critical and doesn't mean you end up feeling like you have to "fix" your main.
Get to learn Mids Hero designer. Playing around with it costs you nothing. You can have many theoretical builds and you can then throw the build on the forums and get a critique of them.
If you're still not sure about optimum settings ask in your particular AT's forum section. There's always some very knowledgeable people there who will be happy to advise.
For what it's worth, my own experience is that if you put many purple sets in, you'll maybe do a lot of damage, be highly accurate and have a high recharge rate - probably to the cap on them all. But in doing so you'll miss out on lots of other useful secondary effects. And all of that before we start talking about Procs, so maybe one or 2 purple sets great but you probably won't need more than that.

I've noticed that many of the purple sets appear to be arranged so that the maximum utility from the enhancement percentages themselves comes with a number of enhancements below the point at which you get the most useful set bonus, which means that you're paying hugely for inefficient slotting.

This fits in hand-in-hand with purple set bonuses still working while exemplared, leading me to believe that they were designed with heavy exemping in mind.
Purples do push you way past the ED cap for the primary attributes, but I see it as making them "exemplar-friendly". That way when you exemp down to the mid-20s for a Sister Psyche WTF for instance, the scaled-down enhancement values are still relatively high compared to non-purple sets or SOs.

Then take the lone "pure" purple and slot it in something else that takes it. I love putting it in damage auras, slotting in another generic damage IO, then enhancing up the secondary effects of the aura.
You do, after all, have two (or three) builds. You can always make a second build with heavy slotting on your pre-say-30 powers and just generic IO (or frankenslot) those with 30s. Then if you're doing a lowbie TF, flip to that build and go with it.
I frequently unsub for a month or two, and every time I do I set up 30+ lowball bids on purple recipes across several characters. Every time I come back, I find I've won two or three of them.
I'm not talking super low bids, more like half to two thirds of prevailing price, but it's still a pretty substantial savings if I plan to use the recipe, or an easy profit if I relist it.
They're a good investment, too. Purple recipes/IOs hold their value a lot better than inf does.
