Fire vs Ice for /thorn

Ive been wanting a dom for ages now but Ive always had other projects ahead in the line-up but now Im finally fred up enough to get into this AT.

Ive taken both primaries to 50 on a troller, and I think Ive got a basic grasp of playstyle differences versus being on a Dom.

Im just looking for insight on how these 2 sets work with /thorn.

I liked these 2 sets particularly b/c I know they favor melee-oriented builds due to their heavy-hitting pbaoe toggles.

Ice is mostly for amusement via ice slicked mobs tripping onto thorntrops and the fact i love ice control like the Irish love ale.

Fire is b/c my experience as a fire troller was fire/kin and by the time Id rolled this toon he was my 5th kin...so I kinda flaked out on him before I put much work into the set.

Anywho! Any advice/tips/words of warning are welcome.

I would highly recommend the following /thorns--

Ice/ -- I love Ice and for many reasons. It is a very effective control set and the slows RULE. Flooring the recharge of the critters, confusing them, a hold that also slows, Ice slick, and a pet that also holds as well some pretty solid melee dmg to boot.


Earth/ -- This has got to be one of the best powersets invented in all the MMOs out there-- A hold which also has a bonus to acc and it packs -def debuff, quicksand which slows plenty and also debuffs defense, earthquake for constant knockdown, stalagmites for the stuns, and is, IMO, better than flashfire, and volcanic gasses, which is arguably the second most powerful hold in the game, next to EMP, that is. The pet for earth/ is nasty too.


Repeat Offenders forever !

Make all IO's available in Paragon Market! NCSoft, the chinese are making BIG money selling influence and other stuff in the game. Best way to stop them = make the paragon market a place to buy all IO's and perhaps other things as well.

I have a Fire/Thorn. He's pretty much tricked out with perma Hasten/Dom and 45% S/L (and some other stuff).

He deals a TON of damage, not sure if he rivals a Fire/Fire/Fire. I'll leave comparisons to folks who work the math. My sense is it doesn't, but it also does debuff and toxic damage.

The biggest issue is survivability. He is an aggro magnet and, even with 45% defense, he has no real resist other than Tough. You really, really have to be patient and let the tank get aggro before you go in and rip the mob apart.

It's clearly a melee toon. With Thorn Burst, Thorntrops, Hot Feet, Fire Cages, Flash Fire and cone attacks...he wittles down mobs quickly.

I would go Earth/Thorny because the majority of the primary powers are patches that work well with melee.

You can drop a Dominated Stalagmites, a Powerboosted Quicksand, a Powerboosted EQ and pick off the mobs and when things are wearing off, reapply a Powerboosted Quicksand, Powerboosted EQ and a Powerboosted Volcanic Gasses and maybe add your AoE Immob and step back and use your ranged powers.

If you decide to go Earth/Thorny/Ice...you can pick up Sleet and Ice Storm to further debuff the mob and do excellent damage with Ice Storm. Sleet offers -Def and -Res.

ok...so i guess Ima go with ice/thorn. earth IS awesome, but not what i was looking for this round.

So onto the next question...do I really need permadom as ice control?
