Lagging with spikes in HD & network activity

Hi. Since October, I've been having a problem with COH. It intermittently lags for 60-90 seconds, rendering the game unplayable while it does this. I've been running the Performance Monitor in Win7 to see if I could learn anything about why this is happening, but haven't found anything conclusive.

Network and hard drive activity spike up very high, and my netgraph in-game shows tall green lines. Sometimes CPU usage spikes as well.

I researched and disabled indexing, but it didn't solve the problem. It seems to happen outside of COH as well, but its not as noticeable unless I'm in-game.

Also, my video drivers aren't up-to-date. When I update them, Win7 doesn't boot up. It freezes after the splash screen. I'm able to get into safe mode and roll back the video driver, which lets Windows run normally again. I've tried updating twice with the same results.

If anyone has any idea of what might be causing this, feel free to let me know. I'll attach a DxDiag log file and HijackThis log file to this thread.

First thing to try would be to update your video card drivers

Tex, he needs more direct instructions than just "update your video card drivers." He's tried that, but through Windows 7.

Visha, here's what you need to do. Do NOT trust Windows 7's auto-update feature for drivers. Go directly to the nVidia site and look for your drivers there. Save the download, and install them from that file.

After that, there might be other issues that I don't see offhand.

Thanks for the replies. I did try updating the drivers directly from nVidia's website a few months ago. I actually tried it twice. This is just the snip I saved to a textfile on my desktop with the dates and versions of the drivers (I always do that when I make changes, just to know what I'm going to and where I came from).

Upgraded to:
8.17.12.6099
10/16/2010

Reverted back to:
8.16.11.9107
9/27/2009

When I update the driver, Windows doesn't boot up completely. It never gets to the login screen; it just hangs. Last night, I updated the network card's driver, because I was researching some more and saw that some people with HD and network spikes were able to solve it by doing that. It didn't work. About 20 mins. in, it started again.

By any chance do you have a program running that changes your wallpaper every few minutes? Somebody else was experiencing this same thing. They had regularly spaced lag spikes and HD usage and it turned out to be that program.

Hi Mandu. I'm not running any software like that. I think I know what you're referring to though. Years ago, some people in my old office used something similar. I think it was called Webshots. They loaded up on pics of puppies and kittens that changed every hour.

I think I would try to fix that video driver issue first. Those may be corrupted and causing issues if the OS isn't working correctly with newer drivers.
Basic instructions for a driver install with steps that clean out the old driver, just use the directions for "Without modded inf" Steps 1-6

Hi Terra. I went through the instructions in your link. I grabbed Driver Sweeper and the drivers from the nVidia website (I had CCleaner, been using it for years). I then uninstalled the nVidia Display drivers (there were a few other nVidia categories, but the screenshots showed those). I rebooted into Safe Mode, Windows 7 reinstalled the drivers, I ran Driver Cleaner and had it remove the drivers again and reboot. I then installed the new drivers and rebooted again.

The same thing then happened that happened the first 2 times I tried updating the video driver. Windows 7 started loading, the logo with the swirling colors ran, and when it came time to show the login screen, I had a black screen in front of me. One thing that I failed to say earlier, and remembered only when it happened again is, when the black screen was up, all of my USB devices died. I use a wireless network card and it had no light, and my keyboard, which is USB, froze (numlock was stuck on and caps lock wouldn't turn on, neither would toggle).

I did a hard boot after waiting 10 mins and went into safe mode. I then tried to roll back the driver, but the option was grayed-out, which leads me to believe that Driver Sweeper did at least work. I ended up loading from the system restore point that I had created right before I performed this whole process, so I'm back at square one again.

Yep, CCleaner is a great program. When you said, "Windows 7 reinstalled the drivers" do you mean Windows is connecting to the internet to download and install? You don't want that to happen, so disconnect from the net before you start the process.
I would try some older drivers as well, maybe back a couple updates.

One more thing, looks like you may be using a USB hub. If so, take that out of the equation if ya can and also check your event logs for any conflicts/problems. Reading event logs lil difficult at times, but look on the 'net for some help there on the process involved.

Do you recall any program or change you made in the system you did back in Oct that maybe causing the problem, and can you restore back before that time?

Hi Terra. Windows 7 automatically reinstalled the driver for the graphics card when I uninstalled it. I think it did it from its driver matrix. However, my network card is a Belkin wireless USB stick. It came with a USB extension (a cord with a little round bay with one port) which I use to stand it on my desk, between my monitor and right speaker. (This is my card.)

I unplugged the Belkin from the extension and plugged it directly into one of the front USB ports on the pc. I haven't had the extreme lag spikes since, and I noticed that maps also load a little quicker. (I still get little spikes now and again, but its playable and the spikes are tiny, not a solid block of green.)

I'm going to pull out the machine later tonight and try again, with the wireless stick directly in the back of the pc, where the extension is plugged in. I'm curious if its the extension or the rear port, but for now it does look like its a USB issue of some sort.

As an added mystery, my machine has 2 frontside USB ports and a few in the back. When I plug devices into one of the frontside ports, it frequently also knocks my network card off. I suspect its a motherboard issue of some sort. I just never had it affect COH until around October.

Looks like your makin some progress, cool. Windows will load a generic vid driver on startup, which is fine, what you don't want is it tryin to find a driver off the 'net. By keeping the computer disconnected from the internet, YOU then choose the driver you want to install.

Some "extra" USB ports on systems, that aren't directly attached to the motherboard, can be underpowered at times. This might be your main issue. Don't know if your running anything off that same port as your wireless adapter? If you have to run the adapter, I would try to keep it on a seperate motherboard attached USB, (usually on the back of the computer) with nothing else drawing power off that USB port.

If your able, always connecting directly to your modem, bypassing routers, etc., taking them out of the equation can help find a connection issue.
