DA/SS softcap defense?

I am trying to build a softcapped defense DA/SS Tanker, but while it seems that (with incredible amounts of inf for Kinetic Combats) you can softcap S/L, I have also read that you should try to softcap E/N, but I am having trouble doing so. Alternatively, is it even possible to softcap positional defense with this combination? I usually team, but my dark tank, while being scranky has also historically been squishy. I am getting better at playing him, but if anyone has any recommendations, i am all for it.

I am happy to post builds, but I am working on version 6, for positional, and I can't seem to get melee and ranged over 38% or so. AoE is not hard to get high.

You can aim for 32.5% defense to all positionals instead. A small purple inspiration can then soft-cap you. Alternatively, just about any decent outside buffs from teammates can soft-cap you.

If you want to go for S/L/E/N defenses, look for builds posted in the "Dark Armor Sucks" thread which was started by Dechs Kaison.


Here are two builds for Dark Armor that I made for my Dark/Fire Tanker. Maybe they can help you soft-cap positionals.

Solid 2nd build, very nice defenses to all. I love the OG disorient stack with SS.

I'd like to get more resist out of tough, and maybe resocket or reslot rage. Also, I'd try to get more +max end or +hp. But these are more out of personal taste than fixing anything horribly bad with your build. Very solid.

If you do get a hold of the Absolute Amazement proc, let me know how it works for you as I don't have this slotted on any tanks.

Here is a soft capped positional build, I have a Dark/KM with this build, just changed it to SS. Only problem is it includes hover to achieve the def. Its fine with KM, but will b a problem for FS.

Hope it gives you a few ideas anyway!

So, I guess the only question I have now is where to get the $3B or so it is going to take. That may be a conservative estimate.

Is it worth it to softcap the positionals? Or am I better off softcapping S/L only.

There is a lot of energy damage flying around at level 50. Considering that is Dark's weakness, I think it is worth soft-capping to prevent energy damage.

If you have two characters that can solo well, you can start saving up hero merits on one for the Gladiator's proc, and sell stuff on the other for influence. Luck of the Gambler global recharges are a safe investment but random rolls may get you more INF in the long run.

With this build, Mids is giving me a 1.91 end consumption, but when I add it up, I get 1.62. Where is this difference coming from?

Not that I know of, but IMO the advantage of going for typed defense instead of positional is that you can cover a very high percentage of attacks coming your way by soft-capping S/L/E/NE and basically ignoring F/C/Psi. Capping two of the three positionals won't get you nearly the same level of coverage.

Also, typed defense bonuses generally come as 3 or 4 slot bonuses, where you have to use 5 or 6 for positional bonuses. Not having to 6-slot powers to get the bonuses you need is a big plus, in my book.

I actually found it easier on my build to softcap all 3 positionals than iot was to softcap N/E, S/L was doable, though.

Yes, but on the build you posted, you slotted two attacks with sets that provide no damage enhancement at all. I can't see doing that, especially not for KoB.

Currently, my DA/Mace is at 40% S/L/E/NE because I didn't like the trade-offs I would have to make to get to the soft-cap, but it is doable.

Here's a quick and dirty example of a DA/SS build that's soft-capped to S/L/E/NE. Slots aren't optimized, and I stole your idea of slotting Enzymes in Maneuvers, but the attacks are sufficiently slotted.

I just wanted to thank you all. Felix is a *blast* to play now. This is not his current build, I am still working on the inf for the Kinetic Combats, but it's close. The totals will have defense added from the nerve alpha slot, which should (nearly?) softcap them. Currently I have Obliteration six slotted in FS, and have smashing haymaker in KoB.

I didn't follow this thread very well. To answer an earlier question, going for S/L/E/N instead of melee/ranged/AoE has the advantage of fewer slot requirements, which leaves more slots for other bonuses like recharge and HPs. Going for melee/ranged/AoE will protect you against all damage types and attacks, as long as they have a vector flag. Only a few psionic attacks lack a vector flag, and those are mostly on Carnies like the Illusionists. Dark Armor's high psionic resistance ensures you can ignore those attacks.
