Client won't load past title screen

My game client will no longer load past the title screen. The program reads as not responding no matter how long I let it wait before opening the task manager. It's a very nice picture, but makes for a slow night.

I am able to log in successfully in safe mode, which makes me suspect it may be graphics related. If I try to adjust the graphics settings after logging in with safe mode, the client stops responding. I'm not much of a technophile though, and may easily be completely wrong.

I did download and install the most recent graphics drivers just in case - no luck.

Below I have included the COH Helper and Hijack This reports.

I was able to log in successfully as recently as Friday, December 17. I believe I ran the Khan task force with some friends that evening. Attempting to log in the following day met with disappointment. I have tried the few fixes I could think of on my own - updated drivers, turning off superfluous programs, even ran a virus check just in case. Fix failed.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I can log in, but once I select a server I get booted back to the main screen with a message telling me there is no response and to try this server later. None of the servers I tried were full (red).

Curious, myself.

Check out the threads titled "No response from this server..." - they cover this problem. The gist of the problem is that they rolled out a patch saturday morning to address a bug in the Winter event but not all the update servers appear to have gotten the patch. When you run cohupdater and connect you get a random update server - if its a good server, you are ok, if its a bad one it will un-update your CoX install and you get this error because your client version doesn't match the game servers.

If you get the error you need to force the game to re-update by flushing your DNS cache and deleting the checksum file. It may take a couple tries until you get a good update. Once you have a working copy there are instructions at the end of the other threads on how start CoX in a way that bypasses the update so that you don't acidently get downgraded again.

Adding "-ps 64.25.34.144" to your shortcut seems to force the updater to use a patch server that has the correct patch on it. I saw this in another thread and it worked for me.

I have tried the fix with the "-ps 64.25.34.144", though I'm not getting any error message. It downloaded the patch and proceeded on from the update to the loading screen. Where it once again froze.

Let me stress that I don't get any kind of error message. I don't get to the login screen, or the server selection. The title screen with the CoH title image above the massed signature characters with 'Loading' to the right is as far as I get.

The game never loads past this screen.

Either uninistall WindowBlinds or go into the program itself and set it to ignore City of Heroes.

This is a known conflict between WindowBlinds and CoH.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

This will work till you shut down your system. Then you'll have to do it again.

4) Press the Windows key and R at the same time. This will open your Run window.
5) Type "cmd" without quotes and press enter. This will open a command prompt, a black window with white text.
6) Type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes. Do not forget the space in the middle. Press enter.
7) Launch City of Heroes. The updater should say 'Checksumming' for a couple minutes, then should verify files. Once it does this, proceed.

This will not solve the OP's issue at all. He is not having THAT problem.

WindowBlinds is set to ignore CoH. I've successfully run CoH and WB for the last several years. I apologize for not mentioning that earlier - I am aware of that potential conflict but forgot to mention it earlier.

The last time I had this problem I ended up having to replace the video card to resolve it. I'm hoping to avoid that this time if at all possible.

The behavior you describe is the exact problem that WindowBlinds causes. I'm wondering if you might not need to remove CoH from the ignore list and re-add it.

Some of the Firewall software had similar problems at times when the coding in the updater changed. Removing and re-adding it to the safe list resolved the problem.

Since I'm not sure how the ignore system works in WindowBlinds, I don't know if it's a specific file that's ignored or an entire folder. In either case, it wouldn't hurt to try it to see if that resolves it.

Right... so. Oddities. Apparently I don't have WindowBlinds, (Or at least there's no such program in my control panel) but StarDock's 'My Colors', which is much the same, was the culprit. Tried re-setting the exclusions, no luck. Uninstalled it completely, vioala!

Thank you very much for the help hunting it out. Now, back to heroing. Up, up, and avoid that building!

To be honest, I didn't finish reading the following line from the services section of your HJT report, I stopped when I saw WindowBlinds on the line:

Quote:

O23 - Service: Stardock WindowBlinds (WindowBlinds) - Stardock Corporation - C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\MyColors\VistaSrv.exe
Apparently there is some common code in the Stardock software that affects CoH. This is something that I've suspected for some time now due to some of the problems others have had.

I'd noticed that you also had StarDock's ObjectDock and ImpluseDock. If messing with WindowBlinds didn't help, I was going to suggest disabling these and see if it resolved it.

In any event, I'm glad you got it working. Aren't these paid programs? If so, you may want to file a support ticket with StarDock about the problems between the MyColors software and CoH.
